Red sludge flowed into the Danube River on Thursday, threatening a half-dozen nations along one of Europe's key waterways. Monitors took samples every few hour to measure damage from the toxic spill and emergency officials declared one Hungarian tributary dead.

It's in the Danube so... it will be in Austria and in Germany within a couple of days.
This has the potential to become an international disaster and I wonder who is responsible. I am sure that the Hungarian people first and foremost want his head on a silver platter.

Thousands of Hungarian residents battling to contain the flood of poisonous red sludge have been warned to wear face masks because as the slurry dries it will turn into a toxic dust cloud.
...
The damage so far has come from the mud but with dry, hot weather and strong winds forecast over the next few days, the environmental disaster is expected to spread.

Volume of waste released nearly as high as Gulf oil spill (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/hungary/8052160/Hungarys-toxic-flood-could-turn-into-a-cancerous-cloud.html)

Well, this is all downstream on the Danube from Germany & Austria. So, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria & Romania have all this loveliness to look forward to.

Regardless, it's quite awful. Here are some very powerful pictures courtesy of the Boston Globe:

"Civis slaps his forehead" How stupid of me. You're right. But this could have devestating effects.

Drinking water in Hungarian villages hit by a toxic sludge spill is safe, but must be continuously monitored, along with the air, soil and food, for contamination by heavy metals, the World Health Organisation said.

Reporting on an investigation conducted in Hungary last week, the WHO called for the removal of the corrosive mud to be completed, especially from houses, to minimise residents' exposure.

Residents and nearly 4,000 workers involved in the clean-up should be given clear advice on protecting themselves, the WHO said.
