I have always been interested in the taxonomy of Mexico.

To try to understand Mexico better, I'm going to be uploading pics of nominees for the Ariel Premios, Mexico's version of the Academy Awards. Obviously, this can't be representative of the whole country, but I think it would be interesting to see at least what phenotypes Mexicans like to see in their movies.

Here are the three actresses nominated for best actress in the 2010 awards(I'll upload more later). What phenotypes do you think they have?

For my eyes look like a typical mix of Amerindian and Ibero-European, Amerindian trait being dominant clearly.

I think that Ariadna Gil is spanish and curiosly has some strange face features for an spaniard. Between the rest, i only know Diego Luna. Only maybe Diego Luna , Irene Azuela and Fernando could pass as spaniard. The rest are clear mestizo. It is curious because most of the mexican telenovelas actors and actress are whites or castizo heavily european, and could pass as spaniards , and it is the same with rest of latinamerican telenovelas dominated by mostly european actors(even in Peru:D).

Curtis24

Yes, I thought this odd as well. I had always heard that most Latin American actors, as you say, tend to be more European phenotypically, even if the people of the countries they represent aren't. Yet, most of the actors and actresses I posted(who are nominees for Mexico's equivalent of the Academy Awards), seem to have some Native American heritage.

People seem to relate more to actors/actresses who look like them, I guess.

Most?

He's being sarcastic.

Keep in mind, Spanish actors and actresses will sometimes act in Mexican films; thus, if Ariadne Gip is really Spanish, then obviously she's not indicative of the taxonomy of Mexico. Later on, I will post what region of Mexico each actor/actress is from, if I can find the info.

Here are two of the nominees for best actor in 2007, I'm still looking for good pics of the third nominee:

Ariadna Gil is indeed Spanish and I've removed her pics from the thread.

It seems like the actual Mexican natives are overwhelmingly mestizo.

Paulina Gaitan looks mostly Mediterranid-Alpinoid, slight Gypsy and/or Indianid possible.

Teresa Ruiz is Mediterranid-Alpinoid + Zentralid (Istmid?)

Asur Zagada seems to be rather Zentralid (Pueblid), most likely Mediterranid influences.

Silverio Palacios might be rather Alpinoid-Zentralid (Istmid?)

Harold Torres = robust Indianid type.

Fernando = Atlanto-Nordid + Alpinoid, no foreign influences visible.

Armando Hernandez = Pueblid + Mediterranid influences.

Elizabeth Cervantes = pred. Mediterranid.

Sofia Espinosa = Mediterranid with Pueblid.

Angelina Pelaez = pred. Pueblid

Sonia Couoh = pred. Pueblid, slight Mediterranid possible.

Veronica Langer = Nordid-Dinarid-Alpinoid mix, looks Central European, foreign admixture low to non-existent.

Lmaoo. How many Baltids settled in Mexico? Basically zero.:picard2: It's obvious by his facial shape and high cheek bones that Canelo Alvarez has Amerindian blood. The Spanish+Amerindian MIX is what is supposely is giving him a 'Baltid' look.

An interesting thread with very interesting phenos. It seems like Mexican movies are the opposite of telenovelas in terms of actor's phenotypes.

Yes because movies tend to portray more the reality.

That's true. I could use a lot of these actors to debunk that myth that Mexicans worship the more European phenos or that people with those phenos have it easier in Mexican main stream media.

This guy hasnt worked in Hollywood but he is highly respected in Mexico, his resume is quite impressive, he has been nominated for 8 Ariels as best actor and won five of those 8.

If you are interested on watching one of his films see him at the gore comedy "El Infierno".
