How about Armenia? Unfortunately there is not that much information online so I'll ask here.

What about traveling. What do you suggest? Train, bus, taxi?
Some of us speak Russian, is that enough? What about English? Useful? And if so, where?
What about the security? We are a mixed group is it safe for European girls?
We don't need hotels but are there even hostels.
Any cultural rules we should obey?

Armenians are a Caucasian conservative Christian population, I am personally not that comfortable with this, but if you don't mind this, then I can tell you I am from Yerevan, the capital city of Armenia. I recommend you visit our country's capital to get a better idea of our general phenotypes, over 1 million people live in Yerevan, and there are only 3 million people in our entire country (except Karabagh). In the capital city, you'd get a better idea of what modern and more civilized people. You'd get better hospitality there.

I recommend you go to Jermuk and Sevan.


Jermuk (Armenian: Ջերմուկ) is a mountain spa town in the southern Armenian province of Vayots Dzor Province, 53 km east of the provincial capital Yeghegnadzor. It was a popular destination during the Soviet era and nowadays is still famous for its hot springs and mineral water brands bottled in the town. It is attractive for its fresh air, waterfalls, artificial lakes, walking trails, the surrounding forests and mineral water pools. The town is being redeveloped to become a modern centre of tourism and health services. Jermuk is also being set up to become a major Chess centre, with numerous chess international tournaments scheduled in the town.

Sevan (Armenian: Սևան), is a town and popular resort in Armenia, located in the Gegharkunik Province on the northwestern shores of Lake Sevan. The town is located at a height of more than 1,925 metres (6,316 feet) above sea level, 65 km (40 mi) northeast of the capital Yerevan.

The town is surrounded by Sevan National Park, which extend from the northeastern parts of the town to the southwest, while Lake Sevan forms the natural border of the city to the east.

As of the 2011 census, the population of the town was 19,229. However, as per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Sevan is 19,200.

Armenia is a very safe country. There are a lot of hostells in Yerevan. Food is very good, natural, healthy, tasty and inexpensive. Taxis are incredibly cheap, it's more convenient to use online service Yandex-Taxi, you can download that app to your android device.
Russian and English will help.

I've read that Armenia and Georgia are the most spectacular and scenic. Azerbaijan is said to be touristically less attractive and worthy of interest.

As for Armenia I can say that it is OK to travel in winter, but it is a just matter of taste, if you like winter sports, skiing, etc.
Winter in Armenia is soft enough, and the roads are usually open and passable.

But in my opinion the best time to travel to Armenia is autumn, September and October, when the weather is perfect comfort, it's warm but not too hot, and there is a fantastic abundance of delicious fruits, berries and vegetables with incredible cheapness.

As for Armenia and Azerbaijan, I think that probably it will be better first visit Azerbaijan and then just go to Armenia, because at the border in Azerbaijan tourists who previously visited Armenia can get some troubles.

As far as I know, EU citizens do not need a visa to visit Armenia and stay up to 90 days.

So in short, Armenia is a country with beautiful nature, delicious food and very friendly people.

Last but not least Armenia is a very safe country, where crime practically is non-existant.

Do they speak Russian in more rural landscapes? If we go to Armenia, we don't want to stay in Yerevan but also visit the landscape. Especially the ancient Christian heritage is interesting to me. As I said we would travel with some people who speak fluently Russian. But nobody speaks Armenian.

Well I don't think it would be a problem. I can definitely say that Russian is widely spoken everywhere in Armenia. Of course very old women or little children in rural areas may not know Russian.

But since you mentioned the genocide memorial, let's talk about it. It's something we don't really learn at school in France. We only focus on WW1 and the aftermath of the Treaty of Versailles. We don't learn how the Young Turks from the Committee of Union and Progress persecuted the Armenians, the ideal scapegoats of a dying Ottoman Empire. The Turks, assisted by their fellow Muslim comrades the Kurds and the Circassians, behaved like jackals, there's no other word, and slaughtered Christian victims: Armenians of course but also Pontic Greeks and Assyrians. Men were shot and women, elderly, children were deported to the Syrian and Mesopotamian deserts where they couldn't survive the scorching heat Young girls were sold for the harems. Atatürk continued the same shameful policy before he proclaimed the Republic.

Sorry for reminding this tragedy, it's still a bone of contention in Turkey, but truth has to be known. I still like Turkey and the Turkish world the same way I like Germany even though I blame the Nazis for what they did.

Armenia is among the safest countries for Americans to travel to, according to a new rating system announced by the United States Department of State.

The revamped U.S. State Department system, which was unveiled Wednesday, ranks countries by threat level based on several factors, including the risk of crime, civil unrest, terrorism, and natural disaster. The tiers are the following: Level 1, Exercise normal precautions. Level 2, Exercise increased caution. Level 3, Reconsider travel. Level 4, Do not travel.

Armenia has been included in Level 1, the lowest advisory level for safety and security risk, though the travel advisory lists Nagorno-Karabakh (Artsakh) as a region to avoid “due to armed conflict.”

Neighboring Georgia has also been ranked in the Level 1 category, whereas Azerbaijan has a Level 2 ranking. The State Department also urged Americans to reconsider travel to Russia (Level 3) “due to terrorism and harassment” and Turkey (Level 3) “due to terrorism and arbitrary detentions.”

I've been seriously considering a trip to Armenia and Georgia (especially the wine regions, yum), but a lot of the places I am interested in seem hard to get to unless you pay for an organised tour. Is there a lot of tourist-friendly infrastructure there? Is it easy to train/bus between the two countries?

You need not pay for an organised tour and can easily travel by your own in Armenia. There are a lot of video in internet about solo travels in Armenia. Even a girl travelling solo on bycicle through the whole country. As to crossing border and travelling Armenia - Georgia, it's very easy and can be done by air, train, bus, minibus, taxi and even hitchhiking on foot.

Couple from Netherlands doing touristic business in Armenia

Sandra and Marty, a couple from Netherlands came to Armenia seven years ago to share technologies of growing Dutch roses in greenhouses and they did not even imagine that they would remain in Armenia after the end of the contract.

"I didn’t even hear about the existence of Armenia, but very soon Armenia became dear to me, Sandra told, I started to learn Armenian. Of course, it was hard for me, but I managed. We bought home in the village of Goght located about 40 km from Yerevan. The view from our house is enough to stay here forever. This is a fairytale. After renovation, we decided to open a guest house. We started a business that we had never done before. Now we have tourists quite a lot - from Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Holland, Sweden, Russia. Most tourists come from Germany. Germans like to travel. If, for example, the Dutch first ask where Armenia is, the Germans immediately say: we don’t know about Armenia, but we definitely want to come".

Sandra and her husband go to Holland for two weeks every year. And during this short time they manage to miss Armenia.

"We love Armenia. When we leave for Holland, I want to go back to Armenia. I worked and lived in different countries, but I always wanted to return to Holland, I understood that those regions were not for me. But Armenia gave another feeling, said Sandra.

In Armenia, there are millennial traditions of celebrating the New Year.

Armenians had three New Year holidays: “Amanor”, “Navasard” and January 1. In the oldest times Armenians celebrated the New Year, called “Amanor”, on March 21, on the day of the vernal equinox.

In old times “Navasard” (new year) was celebrated in Armenia on August 11.

After the adoption of Christianity, the New Year holiday was postponed from August 11 to the Sunday following November 10, and due to the transition to the Gregorian calendar, from the XVIII Armenians began to celebrate the beginning of the year on January 1 everywhere.

Before Christianity, Armenians in the New Year attached importance to the number 7 by the number of seven pagan deities. In total, 7 types of fruit and 7 dishes were obligatory on the New Year's table.

In past the main treat for the new year was "Tarehats" - bread baked from flour, nuts, raisins. According to the tradition, “anush apur” (soup with dried fruits), gata and hapama - pumpkin stuffed with honey, rice, nuts and dried fruits were also prepared for the holiday.

Instead of spruce in past Armenians decorated the "Tree of Life" («Կենաց ծառ»), which they tied and fastened with wheat straw. Knitted dolls, sprigs of cinnamon and fruits were hung on it. “Kahand Pap” brought to Armenian children gifts , symbolizing fertility and the beginning of a new life.

A young family from Russia left their hometown Chelyabinsk and settled in Armenia. Now they lived about a year in Armenia and told about their life there.

Я работаю программистом в армянской компании. В Ереване очень развита IT-индустрия, много работы для программистов. На эту отрасль здесь делают высокие ставки. Многие мои коллеги — армяне, конечно. Я успел подружиться с ними, в выходные мы командой айтишников играем в футбол.

В интернете существует статистика, которая называет Ереван одним из самых безопасных городов в мире. Да, это действительно подтверждается тем, что я могу выйти на улицу в любое время суток, и я не увижу пьяных компаний или агрессивно настроенной молодёжи. В Челябинске после 11 вечера ходить по городу небезопасно. Особенно в Металлургическом районе, где мы жили.

Ещё живя в Челябинске, с 2014 года я начал увлекаться бегом. Сперва принял участие в челябинском полумарафоне, потом в римском. В Ереване отличные условия для занятия бегом. Тут есть Разданское ущелье, там можно бегать, как и в многочисленных парках и аллеях. В отличие от Челябинска я могу в любое время пробежаться, не задумываясь о том, чистое ли сегодня небо, не было ли выбросов сегодня.

Во время проживания в Ереване познакомились с ребятами из Tri Club Yerevan — движением триатлонцев. Мы вступили в это сообщество, где отличный коллектив, почти семья. Проходим вместе тренировки разного рода, проводим мероприятия. Из последних таких соревнований — зимний триатлон. Моя жена тоже увлеклась бегом и осенью прошлого года поучаствовала в ереванском марафоне.

Для нас как для челябинцев главным фактором при переезде, повторюсь, была экология. В Ереване она по сравнению с Челябинском великолепная. У нас прошли болячки: дочь перестала кашлять, у жены прошли все виды аллергии, которые её беспокоили раньше. Мы живём на 14 этаже и, просыпаясь, из окна видим чистое небо и слышим пение птиц.

Местные товары и продукты очень дешёвые. В сезон овощей и фруктов примерно за 120 рублей я могу купить 20-литровое ведро местных абрикосов. Фруктов и овощей здесь очень много, это витамины, и это дёшево — тоже плюс страны.

Кстати, армянский драм — одна из самых стабильных валют. За тот год, что мы здесь живём, его курс к доллару практически не менялся.

Если вам не нравится человек, вы ему в открытую можете сказать. У армян такого нет, они будут ко всем настроены доброжелательно, даже если ты этому человеку не интересен. Это, скорее, европейское поведение.

Спустя примерно полгода жизни в Ереване я уже начал понимать жизнь местных и армянский менталитет. Мне после Челябинска было странно увидеть картину, когда ты просто идёшь по улице, и люди тебе улыбаются. Если такое увидишь в России, то подумаешь, что человек либо сумасшедший, либо что-то хочет от тебя. В Армении это норма.

Our sores and diseases disappeared: the daughter stopped coughing, my wife lost all kinds of allergies that had bothered her before. We live on the 14th floor and, waking up, we see a clear sky from the window and hear birds singing.

Also my attention was attracted by the fact that in Yerevan most people speak English. Often it is easier for them to explain in English than in Russian. And the Russian language without the need here is not used.

Almost ten years ago, an Italian Federico Tarabella from Tuscan arrived in Yerevan and could not leave Armenia anymore. He told about what kept him in Armenia.

"I found my happiness in Yerevan and am not going to leave here. I moved to Armenia in June 2010, I was then 27 years old. I just returned to Italy from Australia, where I was on the program "Work and travel". I came to homeland on business, with the intention to return to Australia, but quite unexpectedly I received a job offer in Armenia from an Italian company...

Armenia is a fantastic country. There is something very special here ... I never thought that I would stay here, marry and that my child would be born here... There is something in the air, something that makes me feel at home like in a song "Սա Երևանն է, այստեղ դու տանն ես…" (" This is Yerevan, and here you are at home ".) Armenia is the place where I would like my son to grow up. The concept of family has a very solid foundation here. I admire the relationship in the Armenian family. In addition, Armenia is safe for children - no kidnapping, no drugs, etc.

When I arrived in Armenia, I was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful and feminine the girls were here. But I did not plan to marry. I was just starting my career, but for marriage, stability is needed ... With my future wife we worked together, she was so cute, but I couldn’t take care of her, we were colleagues. When she left work, we started dating, and four years later we got married.

Traditions are very strong in the family of my spouse, and from the very beginning I was very attracted to it. I come from a country that has completely forgotten its foundations. Armenia seemed to take me back in time.

I like a lot of things here, especially safety. That is why I really want my son to grow up and get an education in Armenia, away from everything unnecessary, from harmful acquaintances. I see a great future for him and I will do my best to make his dreams come true".

Famous coach Vicente Del Bosque, former chief coach of Spanish national team has arrived in Armenia and is planning to share his skills and experience with Armenian experts through coaching lectures.

At a press conference in Yerevan, he said:

First I must congratulate on the occasion of the two victories of Armenian National team against Lichtenstein and Greece in the Euro 2020 qualifier. My friends who work with the Armenian national team always tell very good things, they are very satisfied. They’ve told me only positive things about Armenia and I am happy to be here. In order to achieve good results Armenian coaches must have good assistants at their sides. My seminar will be on the topic of common development, starting with youth football. Armenian coaches should be surrounded by good specialists, physical training coaches and other specialists. All this will lead to the growth of Armenian football.
