Wow, that's interesting!
He looks like a Swede though, doesn't he?

I knew something was off with that surname. Yeah he does. I wouldn't guess that he had any Russian in him but now when we know it's harder to ignore it :D

I know a lot of Scandos with weir names, even if his name didn't sound Swedish to me either. Like
-Nicolai Cleve Broch
Maria Bonnevie
Stefan Strandberg
So I just figured it was one of those fancy names.

Who say's he Russian? Jerebko sounds Ukrainian because of the suffix -ko. Could actually be Ukrainian or Belarusian. They say his father was "Russian-American" and maybe he was but if so, probably by virtue of ancestry other than the direct paternal line.

I get what you mean, regarding the names I don't think they sound too weird. Broch is probably some old German name? Bonnevie could be some random Danish name to me, and Stefan is actually a very common name in Swedish. You'll see it very often. The thing is, it is very common to encounter German names among Sweden, but Slavic ones indicate recent ancestry.

I followed the two links appearing next to that statement and they said nothing about his father's supposed Russians origin. The only information out there, by using Google, seems to be taken from that unsourced Wikipedia claim.

It was an interview, so they should have discussed it

There were migrations of Wallons in Sweden, so I guess that's where the "Bonnevie" might come from, it means "Good life" in french.

Can't believe I didn't see that, good point but she's Norwegian anyway, still likely though.

Also noticed that Jonas's mother is named Elaine, perhaps she's American too.

I wonder if whoever wrote that article took the information right from Wikipedia.

I examined an older version of article, which included a different source:

http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Jonas-Jerebko-1403/%20Blogging%20through%20Europe%20(Part%20Four:%20I taly)

The son of an American basketball player of Russian heritage who moved to Sweden

I still wonder where THAT source comes from. Have he or his father actually referenced their supposed Russian ancestry in any interviews? I'm sure many Ukrainians have been incorrectly labelled Russians in the West, especially in the Soviet era. Anyway, if his father is of Russian descent, then like I said: I think it's got to be through some way other than the direct paternal line. If the allegation of Russian heritage stems from his father's or grandparents' place of birth, then that too is not definitive. Some immigration records that are publicly discoverable (e.g., the manifests of the ship that immigrants came over on) list nationality, but Ukrainian would not have appeared on any of those manifests because Ukraine was not an independent country at the time.

Yeah, we can't know at the moment, but since they met and talked with him, I think that the whole Russian thing might have been mentioned there, but it doesn't matter to me
