The Nikon Small World competition (http://www.nikonsmallworld.com/), now in its 36th year, is regarded as the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope, and it attracts entries from around the world. The pictures in this gallery are the winning images, chosen by the judges as the top entries for 2010. They were shot by a variety of amateur photographers, professionals and scientists either using microscopes with cameras for work or play.
