Rio’s iconic Christ the Redeemer statue will be lit up in Hungary's national colors on Friday to honor Hungary's efforts in defence of Christianity said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to MTI.

With this gesture, the South American country recognizes Hungary's efforts in defense of Christianity and the contribution of the Hungarian - Brazilian communities to the development of the country.

The statement recalled the October meeting between Rio de Janeiro Archbishop Dom Orani Tempesta and Hungarian Deputy-Prime Minister Zsolt Semjén when the Archbishop offered to the deputy-prime minister that in the future Christ the Redeemer statue will be lit up with Hungary's national colors during a Hungarian national holiday.

Semjén proposed either December 30, which is the 100 anniversary of the coronation of the last king of Hungary Károly IV who was beatified in 2004, or August 20 when Hungarians celebrate the foundation of the state.

According to Brazilian authorities, the monument will be lit up on both days.

Apparently, one miracle has already associated with the last Hungarian monarch, which is tied to Brazil as well: a Polish nun whose leg was infected with a serious disease, in a desperate move to recover prayed to Károly IV of Hungary and the next day her leg completely healed.

Father Omar Raposo who is responsible for the maintenance of Christ the Redeemer statue had this to say: "We are delighted to lit up the statue of Christ in Hungary's national colors, on this day, which is so important for our brothers and sisters."
