Where would you most like to visit next? What are your priorities and dreams for future travel?

My list used to be much longer and a little more exotic, but the World got nastier since the eighties!

Bayreuth, to see the Ring! I hear that it’s very difficult to get a seat though? 1 in 20 applications only are given!

Isle of Man, so near, yet so far. Ancient links with Lancashire, England and Ireland.

Norway. I’ve seen some belting photos of the mountains there, and may actually go and see this year.

Lewis and the rest of the Outer Hebrides. I don’t know why, exactly, just the fascination of going right up to the furthest northwest… Maybe even St Kilda!

Angeln, Schleswig Holstein. Would be nice to see where the English first came from.

The Alps. I was in Austria years ago, but that was before I had glasses, and I suspect that I didn’t even realise what I was missing out on in terms of views!

Athens. Can't believe I haven't made it that far yet!

Rome. Ditto!

Iceland. Especially if I could get to see the Northern Lights.

Kiev. A prominent gap in my Russian experience.

The Hermannsdenkmal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermannsdenkmal)

The Walhalla Temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walhalla_temple)

Library of Friedrich Nietzsche (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_of_Friedrich_Nietzsche)

Anywhere in the British Isles that has huge rolling hills where my wife and I could have a picnic and then go to a pub afterwards.

I can't think of any others, though there are many places I would never turn down the chance to go.

I completely forgot and am shamed.

A small village called Schwanden near Grosshöchstetten, Switzerland. I've many ancestors who came from Switzerland, but the first one to come to America was born there.

Our European tour will hopefully include:

Asturias, Spain
Poitou, France
Betagne, France
Normandie, France
Bristol, England
Canterbury, England
And then probably a million places in Scotland

Most of these spots are where out ancestors originated, so it would be a kind of roots tour of Europe.

Ten of the places I am eying on a map:

Brittany, especially Carnac. It is not just because of my heathern love of megalithic monuments. I read too much Asterix as a kid.

In Germany, Teutoborg Forest, specifically Externsteine and Wewelsburg, and then Baden-Würtenburg in search of German Renaissance art especially the paintings of Matthias Grünewald.

Ireland, especially New Grange.

Greece, especially Delphi.

Sweden. When I was there I missed Götland and Tanumshede.

Norway to see the stave churches.

St Petersburg for the Hermitage.

Newfoundland

Santiago de Compostella

Jutland for various runestones.

Malta - my father's homeland. So small you can ride a bike around it in a short space of time! :D
Anywhere in Ireland
Anywhere in the English countryside
Scotland
Norway
Denmark
Sweden
West Coast of Australia and Tasmania
Canada
Germany

I know this says 10, but I would also include the Netherlands and Belgium, along with Greece and Italy. :p

Well, let's see:

Norway

I've already been to Sweden and Finland, but not yet to Norway because it's most expensive (but also the most intriguing!)...and like I always say "I want to see the fjords before I die ;)

http://www.boxturtlebulletin.com/btb/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/norway.jpg

Iceland and Faroe Islands

Beautiful landscapes, both amazingly interest from a linguistic and cultural point of view :thumb001:

http://www.staindrop-comp.org.uk/phil/pics/images/01Faroes_Thorshavn.jpg

Italy

Believe it or not, I've never been there... And I have *got* to see Venice and Florence, they must be absolutely beautiful... And Rome...historically significant and great food ;)

http://www.galenfrysinger.com/europe/venice13.jpg

The Baltic States

That will be resolved soon, as I am planning a trip in the summer :thumb001:

http://www.overseaspropertymall.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/08/riga_latvia.jpg

India

The holy city of Varanasi (Benares), the religious and spiritual centre of India with the most interesting traditions. Don't worry, I won't use a public restroom :p

http://photos.igougo.com/images/p361021-India-Varanasi.jpg

Dharamsala, the Buddhist municipality of northern India, also referred to as Little Lhasa :)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2185/2116263154_178173ce14.jpg

Thailand

Not for sex tourism, but to see those temples, and enjoy a cocktail while I'm at it ;)

http://www.photoatlas.com/photo/thailand-buddha-temple.jpg

Mongolia

...and the Gobi Desert. Mysterious land of astonishing beauty, warrior tribes with nomadic lifestyle and fascinating horseback archery traditions.

http://johnfenzel.typepad.com/john_fenzels_blog/images/2007/08/26/mongolia.jpg

Socotra Islands

It's not a tropical paradise! It's actually the most interesting place in the world when it comes to biodiversity of flora and fauna...Darwin's paradise ;)

Socotra is considered the "jewel" of biodiversity in the Arabian sea.[2] The long geological isolation of the Socotra archipelago and its fierce heat and drought have combined to create a unique and spectacular endemic flora (which may, therefore, be vulnerable to introduced species such as goats). Surveys have revealed that more than a third of the 800 or so plant species of Socotra are found nowhere else. Botanists rank the flora of Socotra among the ten most endangered island flora in the world. The archipelago is a site of global importance for biodiversity conservation and a possible center for ecotourism.

Australia

Because it's a distant, fascinating land with pleasant people and great view to the ocean

http://www.sydney-australia.biz/western-australia/graphics/western-australia-kangaroo-beach.jpg

Vermont

Bercause of those colors, and because I had an intense dream about it, and because I have a dear friend that promised me a farm job should I ever get tired of the city life :thumb001::D

Not in any particular order

Santorini - have already been to Greece, Rhodes to be precise, but each island has a look all of its own. Santorini looks special.

http://www.travelpictures.co.uk/TP/SANTORINI/220119d%20IOS-Santorini-pp.JPG

Iceland - quite fancy touring the island and crossing over to the Vestmann Islands.

http://island09.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/heimaey.jpg

Orkney and Shetland Islands - these places look magical.

http://www.shetland.org/assets/images/move-to-shetland/john-coutts-lerwick.jpg

Tristan da Cunha - a distant British colony and the remotest inhabited island in the world.

http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/upload/img_400/EN07_117.jpg

Australia but more specifically Tasmania.

http://www.geocities.com/austtravel/tas/hobart2.jpg

New Zealand - to see the amazing landscape and just take in the power of the earth.

http://www.leeabbamonte.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/rotorua.bmp

Russia, Kamchatka - incredibly remote but awesome to look at.

http://www.anglingatlas.com/upload/pics/vulkan_tours_kamchatka.jpg

The Aleutian Islands - very similar to Kamchatka geologically speaking.

http://alaskamaritime.fws.gov/units/images/Islands-of-4-Mountains-lg.jpg

The Galapagos Islands - to take in the incredible flora and fauna of the place.

http://consumerbrigade.com/uniqueweddings/files/2008/08/galapagos.jpg

Seychelles - just for the luxury!!!:D

Woo!
I bought a book called summat like "The Life and Death of St Kilda" a few weeks ago, and am looking forward to having the time to read it!

The Hermannsdenkmal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermannsdenkmal)

The Walhalla Temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walhalla_temple)
Absolutely! That's why I started the thread, to get good ideas off yous lot! :thumb001:

Anywhere in the British Isles that has huge rolling hills where my wife and I could have a picnic and then go to a pub afterwards.
My hills up the road are a bit more jagged and precipitous, probably not too suited to your taste, especially if you were planning any shameful frolicry to go with that picnic. Liable to break your neck if you did it on Whinberry Rocks... ;)

Any place good for my passion of landscape photography :thumbs up.
Howd'yer like the Polar Urals? Gora Payor;
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/6613/dsc01593bb6.jpg

Brittany, especially Carnac. It is not just because of my heathern love of megalithic monuments. I read too much Asterix as a kid.
Aye, that's a good one, a real must-see. Been meaning to write a book on the Atlantic-Irish Sea cultural area...

In Germany, Teutoborg Forest, specifically Externsteine and Wewelsburg.
Ah, of course!

Ireland, especially New Grange.
Been there. Very impressive. Be sure to see Maes Howe on Orkney too, Bryn Celli Du on Ynys Mon, North Wales, and Wiltshire's West Kennet Long Barrow. :thumbs up

Norway to see the stave churches.
Another for my list. I may be going to Norge in the Summer, but we'll be hiking, so I'm not sure I'll get to see these. Are any on good routes? One of our group loves to fish, so if it's near a good trout stream it may help my case...

St Petersburg for the Hermitage.
Impressive stuff there, especially the archaeology. Lots of great Scythian things.

Faroe Islands

Beautiful landscapes, both amazingly interest from a linguistic and cultural point of view :thumb001:

http://www.staindrop-comp.org.uk/phil/pics/images/01Faroes_Thorshavn.jpg

:thumb001:
As for Mongolia, I've been to Buryatia and seen Lake Baikal and was proper gobsmacked. :thumb001:
In the neighbourhood, I nearly got to go to the Sayan Mountains last year, but had my documents nicked which ruined everything. There are some amazing sights in the mountains above Abakan, where Khakassia borders on Krasnoyarsky Kray. :(

Iceland - quite fancy touring the island and crossing over to the Vestmann Islands.

http://island09.files.wordpress.com/2008/01/heimaey.jpg
That them in the pic?

Orkney and Shetland Islands - these places look magical.

http://www.shetland.org/assets/images/move-to-shetland/john-coutts-lerwick.jpg
Aye, Shetland's on my list, and Orkney will need a revisiting. I was only there a day, we took the boat over, leaving the vehicle at John O'Groats, and were driven in a coach to Skara Brae, Brodgar, Stromness, Kirkwall, and the Ronaldsays. :)

Russia, Kamchatka - incredibly remote but awesome to look at.

http://www.anglingatlas.com/upload/pics/vulkan_tours_kamchatka.jpg
I'm reading about them at the mo. A young woman, Marina Galkina, walked all over them all on her own. Bears! I wonder if my Russky hiking mates would be up for it next year?

Vermont

Bercause of those colors, and because I had an intense dream about it, and because I have a dear friend that promised me a farm job should I ever get tired of the city life :thumb001::D

There's always room here. ;) For those colors though, you'd of course have to come in the autumn.

So, OK, I'll add Greece to my list. :lightbul:

Here's the rest:

Back to Scotland.
Norway/Sweden.
Iceland.
Newfoundland.
Patagonia.
Mongolia.
New Zealand.
St. Kilda.
Alaska.

It's astounding really--for a state full of flatlander, neo-Vermonter, near-communists, we apparently have the most lenient gun laws in the country. Go friggin figure.

1. Normandy, France
This is where my ancestors hail from and I would very much like to see their homeland.

2. Norway
I think it would be great to go see the Norwegian fjords, visit the historical sites and so on.

3. Denmark
To see the rune stones and to visit the national museum.

4. Sweden
Götaland as a whole and Uppland interest me most.

5. Finland
Its the landscape that interests me most. I would love to go hiking or camping in Finland. And, admittedly, to check out the great metal scene there.

6. Iceland
Would love to see the land in which the sagas were written, and to visit the places made infamous through the sagas. Not to mention the chance to visit the Arni Magnusson Institute, if possible as researcher and get the chance to look at the manuscripts kept there.

7. Santiago de Compostella

8. Ireland

9. Slovenia
Mostly for the mountains

10. Yukon territory

Europe (most or all of it). A friend has some property in the Balkans so I'd hang round there for a while then make my way through to other countries. The Americas. Japan, going this year. Antarctica not just for a cruise though. And outer space hopefully, it should be realistic by the time I'm older.

Well we of Norman descent do have our priorities straight eh, YV? ;)

1. France: Normandie, of course: Specifically St.-Germain-le-Vasson area from where my ancestors hail, Bayeux, and just generally hang out in the Calvados département..and sip some Calvados while there!;

Paris: Yes I'd like to do the touristy thing--see la Tour d'Eiffel, le Louvre, le Chateau Versailles, L'Arche de Triomphe. Déguster un vrai petit déjeuner dans un petit café plein air. ;);

Provence: Ohhh the culture, the food, the wine, the sun...oh everything Provence! :)

2. England: Liverpool, my paternal Grandma came from there. She was a grand lady. We always had tea and cookies when we went to visit her and my grandpa. I'd love to see what her birthplace looks like and find some long lost relatives. :) Oh course I'd love to go on The Beatles Tour too while there...why not?

London: well it goes without saying that I'd like to see what we Normans built over there...the Tower of London especially. :p I want to see Soho, Piccadilly Square, Big Ben, Buckingham Palace...all that stuff. I want to eat some real English food...no, not kebobs (:D) but real fish and chips sold in newspaper if they still have that kind of thing and wash it down with a good English beer. :)

3. Ireland: I grew up being totally enraptured by this country and its people. I'd love to see it one day. :) I want to hear the sweet lilt of their accent too.

4. See more of my own huge country: the Wet Coast, the rest of the Maritime provinces, ok, maybe Winterpeg, but definitely not during winter. "The Rock", for its culture and language and maybe they have funny jokes about the rest of us Canadians. :p

5. The USA: Drive the coast of California from top to bottom in a red rag top mustang...well we did do part of that already in said vehicle from LA to San Diego (beautiful city which I would love to visit properly next time) but I'd love to do the whole coast and see places like Carmel and Big Sur. Not to mention enjoy some of Steinbeck's countryside and imbibe a bit (or a lot) of wine. :);

New York City, just for the rush.;

Nantucket Island, cuz it's there and Old American :);

the Old South, cuz it's there and a different sort of Old American.

6. Denmark, Sweden and Norway: I know, they are three separate countries but I'm cheating. Shhhh don't tell anybody! :p It's Scandinavia! What can I say?

7. Vienna, Austria: To take in many classical music concerts and breathe in that musical energy.

8. Berlin, Germany: My pal Guntram can actually bring me around to see places instead of giving me Wikipedia links. :D

9. Wales, UK: Tref invited me for a visit! :D

10. The islands of Jersey and Guernsey...Norman places dontcha know! ;)

[And more cheating...Italy (anywhere); Greece (anywhere); Budapest, Hungary; Australia and New Zealand...hmmm so many places and so little time...and money!]

Ohhh and I'm quite possibly going to Switzerland (Fribourg) this Fall! My turn to get to see those Alps!! :D

I've only been along the northern California coast--from San Francisco northward to Oregon. I highly recommend this area though. Truly spectacular.

The real gem is the so-called Lost Coast where the main highway is some ways inland and there is no coastal route other than on foot. I spent a few days in this area camping and just wandering the beach. T'was amazing.

I'll echo this for sure. We were stationed in Monterey, just south of San Fran, and the drives up and down the coast were some of our most memorable experiences. I see if I can get my wife to dig up some of our pictures from the coast around Big Sur.

Can only think of one place.. EVERYWHERE!

I actually haven't had much time to think about it, am too scared that if I start looking into things then I'll just jump on a plane and go and I have to stay here for another 2 and a half years!

I'd be interested to go to the Netherlands, England and the Isle of Man, just because that's where my ancestors came from.

I want to do all the important tourist ones, Paris, London, Rome.

And then because I hate cities and crowds I want to see the little places, the countrysides, the scenery and the back roads.

I'd be pretty open to all of Europe, the States and Canada.

PS I'm glad to see New Zealand's on so many peoples lists! We have a pretty cool little country down here. Oh and if it's not on your list perhaps you could stop in anyway on your way to Antarctica :p

Like Osweo, the top of my list is

1. Bayreuth: to make pilgrimage to Wagner's grave and Villa Wahnfried, as well as the Festspielhaus.

2. Vienna: to see the Hofburg and the Schatzkammer, to see and behold the Holy Lance, the Crown, Orb, and Reichschwert of the Holy Roman Empire.

3. Paris: despite my disdain for the Parisians themselves, I'd like to see some of the monuments from the French Empire before the immigrants destroy them or spray-paint them. Napoleon's tomb and the Arc de Triumph are at the top of that list, but the Louvre is there too.

4. Athens: I want to see the Parthenon before it's gone forever, and its slowly approaching that point.

5. Rome: Really too many things to list here, but at the top of the list is the Forum and the Papal State - specifically the Sistine chapel.

6. Toledo: I would very much like to see at least one of the cities that played a key role in the Reconquista, and Toledo is my favourite in terms of architecture and culture.

7. Edinburgh: Before I die, I’d at least like to make it to the land of my ancestors in Lothian, Scotland.

8. Dublin: Again, land of my forebears. I had a Great-great-Uncle in the IRB and I’m pretty sure I had relatives who were actually at the GPO during the ’16 Rising, so I’d like to see that and the Four Courts.

9. Gamla Uppsala/Gotland: There are simply too many important artefacts here for me to ignore that I desperately want to see, especially the barrows at Uppsala and the picture stones at Gotland – but if I could see one or the other, I’ll be content.

10. St. Petersburg: If only to see the Winter Palace.

After-thoughts and maybes:

Jerusalem: Another city whose inhabitants I could do without, but to see the capital of the Crusader state and the ancient holy places would certainly be nice, especially if I ever wanted to join a lay military order (the Templars, for instance).

Moscow: to see the Kremlin.

Tokyo: I’d much like to see the Yasukuni Shrine and the monument to the Kamikaze pilots who defended the honour of the Emperor against the Americans. I’d like to see the Imperial Palace if at least from a distance.

Kyoto: The Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion) is a must-see for me if I were ever to go to Japan, as well as the Imperial Palace of Heian-kyo.

New York City - To get an idea of the World's capital, feel the rush, and see for myself what all the fuss is about. Hope I won't forget to stop by at the famous Gray's Papaya for a hot dog.

Some ancestor of mine surely was loyal to Genghis Khan, that's all I know for now :D

Amsterdam

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_CPoWkt8j3Hs/TP__4GNGF8I/AAAAAAAAAOI/sdqrQwTqxj4/s1600/Amsterdam_3.jpg

Cruising down the canals, beholding old historical buildings dating back to the 16th century, visiting the Van Gogh museum and I'd like to try out the coffe shops. Even though a large city it appears somewhat laidback compared to hectical towns like Paris or London.

Prague

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_2Ks_Im1Ni8c/TQKh3YUSvEI/AAAAAAAACDA/UX53e3bBeIA/s1600/Christmas_Market%252C_Old_Town_Square%252C_Prague% 252C_Czech_Republic.jpg

Beautiful, old city with a lot of history attached to it. The old town square, the botanic garden and the Strahov monastery are places I'd like to venture.

Istanbul

http://www.plusistanbul.com/images/Resimler_Dosyalar/other/0207istanbul_605.jpg

Former Constantinople. A crossing point of European and Asian influence. Lots of contrasts, lively markets, nice cuisine and the Hagia Sophia mosque that once were a Church, became turned into a Mosque and now is a museum. The city is always alive 24-7 and has a lively athmosphere unique to this part of the world.

London

http://www.londonreise.no/bilder/london_fakta.jpg

London. Tower of London, Big Ben, good nightlife and a lot more. Always wanted to go there.

Tallinn

Looks like a captivating old city with old districts, calm atmosphere and and interesting people.

Venice

Ah Venice.. Beautiful city, nice cuisine, good wine, unique atmosphere and reputably nice people as well.

Sarajevo

Probably going to travel there with a Bosnian friend. Wanted to see the city for quite some time. Judging from pictures I have seen and feedback from various people that have been there its a place definately worthy of a visit.

Viareggio

http://www.fabianihotels.com/img/infoturistiche/12/viareggio_vista_1.jpg

Imo one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. Good cuisine, nice coastline and a comfortable climate.

Rome

http://www.smiil.no/iPhoto/2011/03/rome1.jpg

As a Catholic I have to venture and visit the Papal State. In Italy you find more than half of the works and arts(monuments and masterpieces) and sights of the entire world. They are extremely varied, as they are expressions of various historical eras covering nearly 2800 years. They are also a result of different societies and political realities. Half of this legacy can be found in Rome.

Tahiti

Looks so nice and relaxing. Lying on the beach with a drink and let time go by, diving in the crystal clear water,.. simply looks stunning.
