Wow, thank you very much. I get my Brazilian from my favorite Bossa Nova songs, so I am only familiar with Brazilian Portuguese. Is there a major difference between the accents of Portugal and Brazil?

The differences are big. It's similar to how different british english is from american english, but in the end the language is the same.

the difference don't is big
the singer that you choose for example(Chico Buarque), his accent is more similar to Portuguese
but if you hear the different accents of Brazil(Northeast,Caipira,Gaucho,Mineiro,Baiano...) you can note an major difference
also the Brazilian Portuguese have influence from some words of Indigenous,African,Italian,Arabic... but again, the difference don't is big

I get my Portuguese from Brazilian music, so that's the accent I am most familiar with.
Do you have some nice Portuguese songs with lyrics? So I can see the difference.

Your accent is closer to Brazilian Portuguese. And I understood everything you said. Your Portuguese is pretty good, I must say.
great music btw

Your accent and pronunciation is really good actually but it is Brazilian Portuguese :)
Maybe you like this song and consider trying European Portuguese:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4VMX0q-yQ4
European Portuguese is probably a lot harder for foreigners, specially the pronunciation.

I advise you to learn European Portuguese, Brazilian one has some consonant sound shifts, for example:
"Bom dia" sounds like "Bom gia"
"Boa noite" sounds like "Boa noichi"
E sounds like I, and T at the end become tch.
I have no idea where this come from.
It's just an advise, I think it would be easier for you

Many foreigners learning Portuguese find the Brazilian version to be easier to pick up than the European one, primarily because Brazilians tend to enunciate much more than Portuguese, who often speak with their mouths partially closed, which makes it pretty hard to understand anything for a foreigner.
Also worth noting that European Portuguese is seen as the more formal of the two, closer to the "traditional" form of the language, which could be easier/harder depending on what you're already used to.

Is it fair to say that European Portuguese is closer to European Spanish than Brazilian Portuguese? That's the impression that I am getting.

Not really. A brazilian and a portuguese can fully understand each other. The stardard accent from Lisbon and the one from São Paulo don't even sounds so different.

It is completely understandable which is astonishing if you never learned Portuguese before. How can you spell the words that well? Do you use phonetic transcription?

No, I was reading the lyrics in Portuguese. The rules are very regular and easy to grasp. It is an awesome language.
I like Brazilian telenovelas, like "O Clone" and "Da Cor Do Pecado". I was introduced to bossa nova through these tv shows, then I fell in love with the songs and the language.

I meant phonetically, not grammatically. The sound of European Portuguese is more pure. Brazilian Portuguese has sound shifts. ('d' is pronounced 'j', 't' is pronounced 'tsh', etc.)

very good, it sounds very native to my ears, like 95%.
your brazilian accent is from Rio. For example, the word 'television', you pronounce "têlêvisão", it is how we brazilians from southeast pronounce this word, in northeastern Brazil it would be "têlévisão".

Thank you very much for the kind words. My favorite Brazilian musician is Antonio Carlos Jobim, the great Brazilian composer. His songs have had an influence on me and have shaped my accent.
