Hendaye : Labourd (Pays Basque)

Le pays de Labourd (Lapurdi en basque) est issu d'un démembrement de l'ancienne cité des Tarbelles dont la capitale était Aquae Tarbellicae (aujourd'hui Dax). Si la région de Hendaye est aujourd'hui à la frontière orientale du Labourd, la Bidassoa divisant la Labourd du Guipuzcoa, il n'en a pas toujours été ainsi puisque la cité des Tarbelles, puis les diocèses de Dax et Bayonne s'étendaient jusqu'à Saint-Sébastien.

Labourd (Lapurdi in Basque) was born out of the dismantling of the former city of the Tarbelli the capital of which was Aquae Tarbellicae (modern Dax). Even though the region of Hendaye is now at the eastern border of Labourd as the Bidasoa river divides Labourd from Gipuzkoa, the Tarbelli then the dioceses of Dax and Bayonne extended as far as Saint-Sebastian.

Sans surprise, la région est largement dominée par le type ethnique basque, bien défini. On trouve une variante de ce type plus brachymorphique.

Il s'agit là d'un type minoritaire mais assez typique chez les Basques, plus fréquent en d'autres régions basques comme nous le verrons. Notez que certains individus présentent comme un pseudo-prognathisme.

This is a rather minority type amongst Basque people, yet quite typical and more prevailing in other Basque areas as you'll soon notice on this very weblog. Note that some individuals do show a strange pseudo-prognathism.

Iholdy : Basse-Navarre (Pays Basque)

Partie centrale de la Basse-Navarre, la région d'Iholdy rassemble deux petits pays médiévaux de l'évêché de Bayonne : Ossès et Arbéroue (Orzaiz et Arberoa en basque) ainsi que le petit pays dacquois de l'Ostabarès (Oztibarra en basque) en haute vallée de la Bidouze. Bayonnaise ou dacquoise au spirituel, cette partie de la Basse-Navarre était de toute manière peuplée par le peuple aquitain des Tarbelles (capitale : Dax).

The central part of Lower Navarre, the region of Iholdy is gathering 2 little medieval entities that belonged to the diocese of Bayonne : Ossès and Arbéroue (Orzaiz and Arberoa in the Basque language) and a little entity which belonged to the diocese of Dax : Ostabarès (Oztibarra in Basque) in the high valley of the Bidouze river. Either belonging spiritually to Bayonne or Dax, this area was populated by the Aquitanian Tarbellians (capital : Dax).

Sans surprise, la région est largement dominée par le type ethnique basque, bien défini, dont il existe une variante plus "claire". Il semble quand même que ce phénotype basque rappelle en partie les phénotypes "chevalins" dits celtiques des îles britanniques ou de Flandre.

Unsurprisingly, the area is dominated by the well-defined ethnic Basque type a "lighter" variant of which can be found as well. Somehow this Basque phenotype does remind us of "horsy" Celtic phenotypes from the British Isles and Flanders.

Mixe : Basse-Navarre (Pays Basque)

Mixe (Amikuze en basque) est une petit pays de la Basse-Navarre, centré sur la vallée moyenne de la Bidouze, anciennement dans la cité des Tarbelles (capitale : Aquae Tarbellicae, aujourd'hui Dax). Cerné au Nord et à l'Est par des pays gascons, le pays de Mixe a pour capitale la ville de Saint-Palais (Donapaleu), fondation des Rois de Navarre. Le pays semble habité depuis les temps protohistoriques ainsi qu'en témoigne l'enceinte de Béguios appelée Kurku.

Mixe (Amikuze in Basque) is a little country in Low Navarre, centred on the middle valley of the Bidouze river, formerly in the city of the Tarbelli (capital : Aquae Tarbellicae, now Dax). Surrounded by Gascon lands in the North and the East, its main town is Saint-Palais (Donapaleu), founded by the Kings of Navarre. Mixe has been seemingly inhabited since protohistoric times as proved by the round enclosure in Béguios named Kurku.

Pays Basque : Soule/Xiberoa

La Soule est une ancienne vicomté, démembrement de la cité des Tarbelles (capitale : Dax) et héritière du peuple des Sibulates cités par César. C'est également la province basco-aquitaine la plus orientale, reliée au Béarn par la vallée fluviale du Saison et en étroite connexion avec le Barétous : le basque souletin a ainsi été fortement influencé dans son vocabulaire et sa phonétique par le gascon du Béarn, ainsi que son architecture et ses coutumes forales. La langue gasconne, qui en était la langue administrative, est parlée sur ses marges (Montory, Haux, ...) alors que le basque souletin déborde sur l'Oloronais en Béarn avec Esquiule. La capitale de la Soule est Mauléon (du gascon Mau Lion = "mauvais lion", adapté Maule en basque) et l'on peut distinguer trois parties qui correspondent également au découpage médiéval : la Haute-Soule dans les hauteurs montagneuses du Sud, le massif des Arbailles à l'Ouest qui coupe la Soule de la Basse-Navarre et la Basse-Soule, large vallée agricole semblable aux vallées béarnaises voisines.

Soule is a former viscounty, a dismantlement of the Tarbellian civitas (capital : Dax) and heir to the Sibulates people cited by Caesar. This is the easternmost Basco-Aquitanian province, linked with Béarn through the fluvial valley of the Saison and intimately connected to Barétous : as a consequence Souletine Basque has been heavily influenced by the Gascon language of Béarn particularly in vocabulary and phonetics ; so were architecture and foral customs. The Gascon language, which was the administrative language of Soule, is spoken in the margins of the territory (Montory, Haux, ...) while Souletine Basque is known in the region of Oloron (Esquiule in Béarn). The capital of Soule is Mauléon (from Gascon Mau Lion="bad lion" adapted as Maule in Basque) and one can distinguish three parts which match medieval structures : High Soule in the Southern mountainous heights, the massif of Arbailles in the West cutting Soule from Low Navarre and Low Soule, a large agricultural valley similar to neighbouring Béarnais ones.

Ce type physique a été représenté abondamment dans l'art régionaliste des années 30 : il est celui qui a le plus fasciné les observateurs, encore qu'il soit assez commun dans les régions anciennement basques comme la Gascogne.

This physical type was abundantly representated in the regionalist art of the 30s : it fascinated many observers, even though it's quite common in former Basque regions such as Gascony.

Bien qu'en minorité, ce type est également assez représentative d'une apparence basque, moins "exotique". On pense assez à Etxahun, le poète souletin.

Although in minority, this type is also quite representative of another less "exotic" Basque look. It reminds us of Etxahun, the Souletine poet.

They are Basques, thank you for respecting their identity. As the Corsicans are Corsicans, the Sardinians are Sardinians, the Gascons are Gascons, & c.

This is not an argument.

There is no predefined "Spanish" type. Between a person of Berid type from a some province of Spain and another person of Atlanto-Med type from another some province of Spain: the difference is very visible.

For example: there is no predefined "Swedish" type: having blue eyes, light hair and pale skin does not mean being of the same type as another Swedish.

So one day we would have to stop with this artificial sentence: "They look like Spaniards".

The Atlanto-Med type is present in many places in Europe. This is not a specifically Spanish type.

In addition, there are some people who are of the Atlanto-Med type while being typed in their provinces (ie, having a phenotype typical of their province).

The Spaniards are the first to shout "trolling thread!" when a lot of people make threads by posting images of the most typical "Mediterranean" people coming from Spain; these Spaniards say there is more nuance phenotype in Spain, etc, but at the same time they tell you this "they look like Spaniards" for everything and anything ; while some phenotypes, present in some of the analysis of that person, are phenotypes typical of certain provinces province of France.

It's very simplistic to summarize the world to: those who look Spanish and those who do not look Spanish. Knowing once again that there are phenotypes typical of certain provinces. Wanting to standardize everything is not a good thing.

The question of whether these people are Mediterranean or not is not the subject: they can be Mediterranean and have at the same time a phenotype typical of their province.
