View Full Version : Belgium has the highest alcohol consumption per capita of the OECD (West)

Newman

Belgians, above 15 years old, consume, per capita, 12,6 liters of pure alcohol annually, just in front of Austria and Czechia, with respectively 12,3 and 11,9.
Though, it's still way inferior of the Russian average of 13,8 liters.

Beer was invented in Mesopotamia thousand years ago.

Luckily, those muslims were gently allowed to settle, the least they can do is to avoid letting the belgian national average drop too much.

Alcohol consumption has lowered a lot in western Europe since WW2, back in the days, it was at least twice higher as today.

In 1960, french used to drink twice more than a modern russian:

Alcohol consumption is defined as annual sales of pure alcohol in litres per person aged 15 years and older.

So it doesn't include home made alcohol.... in my country for example people drink a lot of home made spirit (from plums, apples etc)

It's endless.

Homemade alcohol is less common, in the west, that in the east, but it's still existent.

Belgium is associated with 'boring' abroad. Someone here even suggested I change my ethnicity or country of origin (and residence) to be more appealing. :p

About Wallonia:

The Walloon's fondness of the French language is made even more pathetic by the fact that the French ridicule the boarish peasant accent and ungodly pronunciation of what the Walloon assumes is the French language. Next to that they have a sheer inability to learn other languages in a decent fashion, which they try to hide by deluding themselves that today the French language is still the language of kings and diplomats even outside the African continent, and by being unwilling to accept that the English language has the highest impact factor in the world. This ultimately bars them from entering the 21st century, and in sharp contrast with their Flemish compatriots who speak mostly fluent English and who have developed a highly dynamic economy, leaves them underdeveloped and clinging to lost ideals like the most geographically Western located Eastern-European region they are.

Belgium might seem boring. This article (https://encyclopediadramatica.se/Belgium) about Belgium certainly isn't.

I could, but I would just impress as many or few people as before, so it remains a Belgian flag even if I culturally feel closer to Dutch people than to Walloons. I still think Walloons are interesting. I wish more Walloons would join, in fact, as well as French (preferably some women among them, not gonna lie).

You have a obvious ties to Belgium too. I still suspect you to be secretly a Belgian and not a Ripuarian German. ;)

What do you mean European punctuation?

EDIT: I see. A comma instead of a point. You mean continental European punctuation versus Anglo punctuation. ;) I got confused because in the UK for instance the first floor is the second floor in the US. I think Americans make more sense here because the English word is 'floor' and not 'endepthment' or 'etage' which implies addition to the ground floor.
But Brits use the comma and points the same way as you Americans do. So European as in continental European versus Anglo.

My paternal grandfather passed away in 1981 sadly, and I never knew him. My father rarely talks about him, even if he loves him and retains a picture of him. However, I did catch a glimpse about how he used to drink a lot. His cause of death was lung cancer, though.

Different generation. Also a harsher generation at that. If you time-warped people of his generation to our current age, they'd easily kick our asses in a fight.

Not yet but not for long, don't you know?
Belgium had its own fast-food outlet chain, Quick, which has been recently taken over by Burger King's French subsidiary...
"De opening van het eerste hamburgerrestaurant van Burger King in ons land is gepland tegen de zomer van 2017. Het merk Quick zal behouden blijven. Dat zegt de vennootschap QSR, de overnemer van de Belgische en Luxemburgse Quick-restaurants.
Eind juli raakte bekend dat QSR de Quick-restaurants in België en Luxemburg overneemt van de Franse eigenaar Groupe Bertrand en dat QSR Burger King in ons land zal lanceren."

I once heard on Walloon television about the possible breakup of the country while interviewing a Flemish woman.

Probably true. A lot of the squabbling is from mutual misunderstanding due to differences in humour and body language.

Well, it does bash your country for being stuck in the 19th century, the last glory period for the French civilisation supposedly. But that's how ED is. It is exaggerated and meant to be offensive.

The first paragraphs bash Belgium as a whole and especially the Flemish Region.

I'm Belgian myself, but in a way I've always wanted to leave this country, even as a very young boy. It's hard to sum up the psyche of an entire "nation", but some adjectives come to mind: ugly, sheepish, anarchistic, corrupt, not taking responsibility, xenophobic, alcoholic, depressed, uncaring, rude (especially my own region, Flanders), not corteous, provincialistic, unwilling to take risks, did I mention ugly?, not very keen on personal hygiene (especially dental hygiene, my God, one would think they still live in the Middle Ages! They only go to the dentist when their teeth are literally killing them or falling out of their mouth).[1]

I haven't written a word of that article, but I very well could have written that (except about the hygiene and ugly parts, those are nonsense). ;)

Back in the day, at least in wine producing countries, almost all men drank wine during the meals that increased ALOT the yearly consumption...nowadays people consume alcohol mostly when they go to bars/discos, not on a daily basis, very different drinking habits.
