Katainen Lashes Out at "Irresponsible Populism"
published yesterday 07:23 PM, updated yesterday 09:00 PM
The chair of the conservative National Coalition Party (NCP), Finance Minister Jyrki Katainen, has sharply criticised political populism in a speech, saying later that he was referring to the right-wing True Finns Party.
Addressing an NCP party council in Helsinki on Saturday, the deputy premier said that populists are unable to carry responsibility. He declared the NCP to be a counterweight to populism.
Afterwards he said he specifically meant the True Finns, who have seen a stunning rise in support in recent months. A YLE/Taloustutkimus poll released a day earlier showed them with 14.3 percent backing among voters, closing in on the governing Centre Party at 17.6 percent support. The NCP had the biggest support at 21.7 percent, ahead of the opposition Social Democrats.
Katainen said that tough times had brought "irresponsible populism" to the surface in Finland.
However he did not rule out possible government cooperation with the True Finns after next spring's election -- saying the NCP might do so if the True Finns relinquished their populism.
