Helsinki’s population could surpass 600,000 by the year 2013. Last year, the capital city had its largest growth spurt since 1998, according to the city’s statistic office.
About 585,000 people lived in Helsinki at the start of this year. The city is expected to gain about 6,000 residents in 2010.
The city’s previous growth spurt was due to fewer people moving to the countryside and an increase in the birthrate. However, foreign immigration was at a standstill.
The City of Helsinki Urban Facts compiled forecasts for population growth for the years 2011-2050.
The entire capital region is expected to grow to 1.75 million residents by the year 2050. Currently 1.34 milllion people call the Helsinki region their home.
