It is a beautiful country Treffie, we have places like those in England (apart from mountains besides the sea anyway), but in Wales its great how stunning views abound almost anywhere in the whole country once your out of the cities.

This is a view (south-)west douwn the main street A40 through Sennybridge (Pont Senni). An information board in the car park off the left of shot states that the car park is adjacent to the old Brecon & Neath railway. Unfortunately, there is no evidence of the dismantled railway by the car park. The only sign I could find is that the large yellow building is a pub called "The Usk Railway".

Sennybridge is also where the main SAS training camp is situated. It's also famous for this

No, the area is very wet and cold, so they use the area for survival training.

English engineering at it's best - the castle, not the bridge. :D

http://www.beenthere-donethat.org.uk/images.big/conwy91big.jpg
The footprint of the house is probably small because I think there was a high tax on houses. They got round this by making the ground floors very small and the upper floors substantially bigger.

Wales is much more characterised by its uplands than England, hills like these are found in the Lake District in England.

I've been to Wales! Some great views over there. I remember crossing a long bridge with a river underneath it. My plan was to climb one of the hills (in the distance), but i think i ended up crossing through alot of private land. Managed to see alot of different animals, although ultimately i was stopped by some cows; Who kept moving towards me in an aggressive manner! http://messenger.msn.com/MMM2006-04-19_17.00/Resource/emoticons/tongue_smile.gif

Cows are like that around here, they're curious. They follow my dog and he gets worried and barks at them. :D If the follow me, I just jump and shout "booo!" at them and they run in the opposite direction. Probably dangerous though. :D

Lots of highlands around here, higlands and herefords - both very docile, lovely temperament, almost like dogs. A few Friesians, but not so many, I've heard Friesan bulls can be nasty.

Well it's because I was not using the translator. Do you know how you detect someone using a Welsh translator? You must check the verb "bod" (to be). Look at your sentence, it came as "wyf yn" which is the archaic/literary translation given by translators, I made use of the modern version, "wyt ti", that means "you are", so "wyt ti twp iawn fy ffrind" means "you are very stupid my friend". That was only a joke of course, you are a clever boyo!

Wales (Cymru) has more castles than any other nation in the world.

I love this 3 minute video highlighting some of the most beautiful
beaches, castles, mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and magical places

I hope you enjoy this little trip through Wales on Transport for Wales’ (formerly Arriva Trains Wales) splendid Gerald of Wales express train. Running form Cardiff to Holyhead once a weekday in each direction, this is by far the best experience you’ll get on the mainline railway in Wales. Take this train before the subsidy disappears! Make sure you have your notifications set!

The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in North Wales was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in June of 2009. The aqueduct is used regularly by pleasure boaters and commercial “narrowboats”, and once every 5 years it’s drained (by removing a plug) for cleaning and routine maintenance.

My ferry trip on the Stena Europe from Rosslare, Ireland to Fishguard, Wales recorded in August 2016. Guys as far as I am aware all the ships featured are still operating on the same routes. The only difference I can see is that back then the Stena Europe departed at 09:00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWRrIuo9gwo&t=540s) and today it departs at 08:00 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWRrIuo9gwo&t=480s). We start at the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestioniog – also known as “the town that roofed the world”. Loco No. 10 “Merddin Emrys” built in 1879 simmers at that platform end ready to haul the last train of the day on a glorious sunny evening. Our train traverses a narrow ledge cut into the hillside above the quarrymen’s cottages to Tanygrisiau, before passing the deep waters of Llyn Ystradau and plunging into the darkness of Moelwyn tunnel. The original track bed lies beneath the waters of Llyn Ystradau, today the line passes the lake on a new deviation between Tanygrisiau and Dduallt that includes a spiral formation allowing the new line to loose enough height to re-join the original route. Once again our little trains clings to the wooded slopes with occasional glimpses of the River Dwyryd far below, we pass the halfway point at Tan-y-Bwlch before we continue our steady descent to Penrhyn and Minffordd where we cross the Cambrian Coast Railway. Our descent continues to Boston Lodge works and onto the famed seawall to our destination at Porthmadog.

I would like to offer my thanks to all the volunteers, staff and train crew for making my visit such a thoroughly enjoyable experience. For a map of the route please click on this link - http://www.festrail.co.uk/route.htm (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.festrail.co.uk%2Froute .htm&v=1o8YJsVOH58&event=video_description&redir_token=FHxuXuzFsVXkUECvOPuEI-r11lx8MTU3NTgzNDA1NkAxNTc1NzQ3NjU2) One question that has come up many times in the comments is "Why doesn't the train leave the tracks when it passes through a switch set for the opposite track at 07:48 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o8YJsVOH58&t=468s)" - it is not east to explain, but I'll try - The switches at either end on the passing loop are set to allow trains to pass without the need for railway personnel to set them, in this case the train will always take the right hand track in the direction of travel, when the train reaches the end of the loop the switch appears to be set incorrectly.

The switch blades are held in place by a spring mechanism that allows them to be pushed over by the weight of a train passing through them, as this train is about to do. Once the train is clear they are automatically set to allow a train in the opposite direction to take the right hand track, thus making the passing loop automatic. The system works well so long as a train never reverses before clearing the switch as that will de-rail the train. The first time this system is seen in operation it looks wrong, but it is common practice on many lines where speed is low and costs need to be kept to a minimum.

Portmadoc, Wales. A steam train drives up the track, we see the sign at Portmadoc station. Various shots of the driver and guard, he waves a flag and the train draws out of the station. There are several shots as it drives down the track. A woman closes the gate on the level crossing and the train drives through. Various shots inside the train as the guard sells tickets. It passes a museum and a woman in traditional Welsh costume stood outside. The barman pulls a pint on the train and takes out a tray of drinks to the customers, a man drinks a pint. FILM ID:287.1

The train up to Mount Snowdon

If the idea of trekking to the top of Wales’s highest mountain doesn’t appeal to you, let the train take the strain.

Departing from Llanberis station, an 1896 locomotive hauls passengers at a steady pace to the summit, where a 30-minute stopover allows time to appreciate the view. On a clear day, the landscape of mountains and lakes stretches out before you, from 1,085 metres above sea level.

If you’re worried about the weather turning (this is Wales, after all) fear not, as the café at the top provides shelter and coffee – really, there’s a café atop one of the UK’s national three peaks!

Starts and ends: Base to peak of Mount Snowdon, Wales

Duration: 1 hour

Best known for: Spectacular views from Wales’s tallest mountain

In the 1800's, crossing the Dee valley was a long and arduous task.

Thomas Telford came up with the solution - a spectacular aqueduct resting on 18 arches, and stretching for 336 yards.

'They’re scared of me (a human) in this. They don’t like people. They usually only come down from the Great Orme when it’s windy, and only the back streets at the top of Mostyn Street. Now lockdown means it’s empty, they’re going further than ever.'

A really exceptional late summer day is the backdrop for this run along the North Wales Coast. Traction is a Class 175 provided by TfW and there’s lots to keep you interested. Join us on this scenic run over one of the country’s most beautiful coastal railways.

Addendum
The Class 175s were introduced in June 2000
The TSS Duke of Lancaster sailed between Heysham and Belfast between 1955-1975
The Menai Straight should read Menai Strait
Holyhead is correctly named Ynys Môn in Welsh.

Outside of the urban/industrial areas, Wales seems to me to have a unique and somewhat ancient atmosphere - 3/4 of the population in Wales live along the lowland strip along the south coast, from Newport to Swansea.

Driving west along the M4 you see a range of hills 10 or so miles to the north of the motorway, this is the southern flank of what is a range of hills and low mountains that stretches unbroken for 150 miles right up to the north coast.

There are towns and resorts along the north coast, but mid Wales only has a few small market towns amongst the moorland, high bogs, cloud covered peaks and ancient woodland. You could get lost for days without seeing anyone here. The fact that it is so unpopulated, with the highly populated English West Midlands only a few hours drive away, is astonishing.

Wales is very green, thanks to particularly high levels of rainfall, and therefore also grey, with all the cloud cover. Green and grey are the key colours here, but when the clouds break, the views can be stunning.

Wales is an outdoors enthusiast paradise, offering fantastic hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, kayaking on well signposted trails/pathways, and the coastline is fantastic - South Wales receives the same Atlantic swells that batter Cornwall in the winter, so surfing is consistent and often excellent.

If you don't mind damp days and cloud too much, are into water sports, hiking or cycling, then Wales is a great place to visit!

It's kinda mad how close Urban England and Wales are, but take away the bridge and it's a days treck. :D You can see Cardiff from Weston, but would take hours to get there if no bridges.

Take it Wales was another overwhelmingly rural-living place until the industrial era, with mass in-ward migration leaving the rural areas emptier than ever.

Yes I think a lot of the rural population moved, particularly to the new coal towns in the valleys during the industrial revolution, similar to the growth of Glasgow, Manchester etc

The industrial period created a new identity really - strong communities developed in the mining towns leading to all the development of rugby clubs and male voice choirs.

More castles per sq mile than anywhere else in the world:

Started in 1896, it was built to connect the main entrance of David Morgan's department store on St Mary's Street, with his other store on The Hayes. It opened in 1899 as the New Central Arcade, running east/west from the Hayes to St. Mary's Street.

After Morgans bought the Royal Arcade, the family formed a holding company called the Cardiff Arcade Company, which owned and operated both the Royal and renamed Morgan arcades, which both ran underneath the store.

After the agreed closure of David Morgan's, the property assets inside the various holdings companies were sold in late 2004 for £25 million to property firm Helical Bar. David Morgan Limited, Deymel Investments Limited and the Cardiff Arcade Company Limited are now all in liquidation.

Between 2007 and 2008 the whole site was refurbished by Helical Bar, with the arcades restored. The companies spent £30M on restoring both the Morgan and Royal arcades, with some first-floor Venetian windows and original wooden storefronts still surviving. The Morgan Arcade is now described as the best preserved of Cardiff's arcades.

The Castle Arcade is a shopping arcade in Cardiff, South Wales.

Started in 1887, it runs south from opposite Cardiff Castle, and then turns east to exit on the High Street, north of St Mary Street, in the Castle Quarter. One of the longer of Cardiff's famous Victorian arcades, it is also one of Cardiff's only two level shopping arcades, the other being Cardiff Market.

Castle Arcade was Grade II* listed in 1975, being the "finest of Cardiff's Victorian arcades". The four-storey entrance block facing onto the High Street is separately listed, also as Grade II*.

I always thought that only at the polar circle could the aurora be seen...

The Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) can sometimes be seen as far south in the British Isles as in Cornwall and Kent:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-64782372

The Northen Lights have also been shown occasionally in Ireland and across the Netherlands sometimes too.

The best views of the Northern Lights though will be in Russia, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, Alaska, and Scandinavian nations - where the Aurora Borealis can be seen more vividly and more frequently.

The Southern Lights can be seen in countries such as Argentina, Australia, and New Zealand.
