Incitement Charges against Halla-aho Dismissed

The Helsinki Court of Appeal has overturned charges of inciting racial hatred brought against local politician and Parliamentary hopeful Jussi Halla-aho. The Appeal Court upheld a lower court's order that Halla-aho pay 330 euros in fines.

The court found that Halla-aho's blog writings on Somalis were within the bounds of lawful exaggeration and provocation. Prosecutors previously charged the eccentric political figure with defaming Islam and inciting racial hatred. A lower court had fined Halla-aho for defaming religion, but threw out the other charges.

The defamation charges arose out of a blog written by Halla-aho, in which he allegedly reviled and defamed the holy institution of Islam. Halla-aho also associated Islam with pedophilia.

Halla-aho was charged with inciting racial hatred on the grounds that he slandered and insulted Somalis in Finland.

However, the important thing to notice here is that Halla-aho used these two statements to illustrate the double standard in Finnish media. He did not claim these two statements are factual (as an aside, imo they are), he simply asked the very important question that why is it not acceptable to say the above in the media, when it is acceptable and even desirable to say equally offensive things about Finns?
