ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- Police in St. Petersburg have launched an investigation into the beating of an elementary-school teacher in front of her pupils, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Investigators said Andrei Petrov, a former police officer currently working for a security company, entered a classroom on October 26, knocked down teacher Olga Kharitonova, 24, and kicked and beat her. The incident took place while children were present.
Kharitonova was hospitalized with numerous bruises and a concussion. Investigators say that Petrov's uncontrolled anger was sparked by an incident involving the daughter of his common-law wife.
According to the investigators, the 7-year-old girl bit her tongue during class and Petrov decided to "punish" the girl's teacher for her "negligence."
Petrov was asked by police not to leave the city for the duration of the investigation.
