I've had it a number of times and each time I can't make up my mind whether it is revolting or not. It reminds me of Pernod in a way, the aniseed taste.

Yes and I love it and I used to drink a lot of, even though I rarely drink it today. Actually I love the true natural one and the french ritual :

Usually I was drinking it alone or with one or two friends, discussing about politics, reading some french poems, listening to some very good music... What a sweet cliche but good memories.

I could live forever in the Moulin Rouge movie, drinking some absinthe in Montmartre, trapped in old good days.

Only the smell of absinthe is quite pleasant, unfortunately this is not allowed in France anymore. I was glad to find bars in Belgium where I could drink absinthe with friends.

I never had the luck to try it.
I really want to try it in the good old fashion way as Ilma said, with the spoon and sugar.
I enjoy anis alcool so I'am already sure I will love it.

It is far more complexed savour than pastis, if you like pastis, anis.. imagine a combination with fennel, pepper something else depending on which absinthe you bought (several brands, productions, recipes etc). Sure you will like it :) if you were living closer I would have invited you to taste one, I still have 2 different bottles here of very good quality. Never try spanish absinthe, it is the worst I have ever tasted, it is a false one very cheap. Try artisanal swiss absinthe.

Thanks for the advice.
I think, now absinthe is legal in France, I might find some without problem. I can also order a bottle in internet. I don't live far from swiss but I never go.

Oh, now you live in basque country

When I had it, the sugar cube was dipped quickly in the absinthe, then placed on the spoon and set alight.

Another time I had it with water.

There is so much ritual and myth surrounding it that you almost feel privileged to drink it. I loved that about it. In reality it tastes horrid.

Sorry to say this Kaz, but absinthe does not fit the herring. I like herrings :D

The herring and absinthe do not go together at all. I cannot imagine a worse combination! :bitch:

vodka - herring, herring - vodka and so that way to infinity. Perfect couple 'together and ever'... :D

Honestly, I prefer the herring without the vodka. Just the herring is good enough. :thumb001:

The second method, the Bohemian method, was invented in the 90's by the Czechs as a gimmick to disguise the fact that their fake absinthe could not louche because it's not absinthe. It's infused vodka with food coloring added. If you do this with real absinthe it ruins the flavor.

is this true?

This shit is delicious, but the hangover afterwards is brutal. Well, everything comes with a cost.

I drank some absinthe but other than the high ethanol content, I didn't notice a high. I tried it a few times, but I'm not sure any of them contained wormwood or thujone. What's the hallucinogenic property supposed to be like?

Now THAT is a 19th century experience ! A drink for ladies and gentlemen alike and as it takes time for it to be "ready to drink", it invites polite conversation.
