To me, pale is anything below Von Luschan 15.

For some reason, many white Americans seem to have a different view on what is pale. I noticed this a lot when I lived in the South where you had many white people who to me were extremely pasty but they considered themselves dark. It could be some form of deluded self-hatred and a desire to be exotic but hey these are the same people who claim Native American blood.

With the heavy British influence in the U.S., especially the South, perhaps they're judging their skin in comparison to "pink" skin. It's different than just pasty skin.

No, they compare their skin to people of SSA and Amerindian origin, those with extremely dark skin. If you've lived in the South, you'd know what I mean.
