Hi all first post! MODERATOR PLEASE MOVE IF THIS IS IN THE WRONG SECTION

I joined here hoping to find out 'what I am' and 'where I'm from', and I am hoping that you can all help me and guide me in the right direction

I understand that there are a few different ways to determine my racial make up/ethnicity? I really want to know!!

Posting a picture of myself on here or I have read about a DNA/ancestry test?

What is the best test to buy?? If they are not 100% accurate, just how accurate are they?

Look forward to your replies, thanks

I can "classify" you if you post at least two mugshot pictures, one frontal and one of your profile.
There is no way of telling what you are genetically 100% accurately without a DNA test though.

Thanks, I will have to wait until I reach 15 posts (I think) until I can post a picture of myself!!

Which DNA test is the best? I dont mind paying a little more if it offers more in terms of results/accuracy

Thanks, are they a 'gold standard'?? and not a company in it for a quick buck - the ones that you see on the telly!!

I agree 23andme is the best. Be weary of phasing with only 1 parent though.

For autosomal it's less confusing and more accurate than AncestryDNA.

Why not both?

What is autosomal and phasing?

Why not both?

Once I asked a member here (cant remember her name) about her phasing experience, and she said that when she phased with 1 parent the results shifted abruptly to something, but then when the other parent got tested the results went back to how they originally were.

So, then I phased with my mom and both of our results shifted to one way. But then my grandma got tested and when she phased with my mom, the results of my mom came back to what they originally were.

So from what I've seen, including my own experience, phasing with only 1 parent might be tricky and the results shift to something that might be deceiving until you phase with another end to level things up.

Is it worth me ordering more than 1 kit for my parents and siblings to get a more accurate result?

Sure, if you have the money, order it for one of your parents too, sibling won't help

Am I wasting money if I order it for my siblings aswell? (I thought I would order for them as our hair, skin and eye colour are at complete different ends of the colour spectrum)

Also will I get better results ordering for 2 parents VS 1 parent??

Shall I order a kit for my grandparents on my mothers side to help (every little helps surely)??

Have in mind 23andme only does the phasing with 1 child. So only 1 of you and your siblings will get the phasing. And Im not sure how it works when getting both parents tested with multiple kids. Will they pick the same child to phase with both parents or each parent will phase with a different kid, creating 2 kids with a "1 parent phasing" situation?

Siblings are going to be your admixture clones within decimals variations, but they can of course have different genes, especially superficial ones like hair, eyes,..that's just a couple out of millions that define that. Everything you inherit comes from your parents, but never the same bits. You ll learn people have very hard time understanding this here though.

Parents and grandparents are useful, if you have shady ancestry. It can show where your different influences come from. Just don't expect incredible differences if everybody is from the same region for example.

Phasing with parents, makes it slightly more accurate as it corrects some no calls and ambiguous/missing snp's.

You results will vary a bit, I don't see how it would give much clarity with a sibling, but sure. I would think 2 parents give at least the same if not better result, but Annie seems to have a different experience and I really know nothing about it since my parents aren't tested and I haven't researched the subject.

Up to nowdays there is no 100% accurate genetic test, which will tell you your exact ancestry, however some do it better than others, and as other people said in this thread, go with 23andme.

Thank you all, I would like to bring this thread to an end, I will order 1 for myself, 1 for both parents and 1 for my grandad on my mothers side (does this sound ok to you)??

As mentioned before I will be wasting my money if I order for my siblings?? And if I am likely to waste money on ordering a kit for both parents please tell me!!
