Maria Leopoldina was Brazil's first Empress consort. She was originally an Archduchess of Austria. She was born in Vienna, Austria in 1797. She was the spouse of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil. She died in 1826.
It was thanks to Empress Maria Leopoldina that the basic color scheme of the Brazilian flag, green and yellow, was chosen to illustrate the marriage of the Houses of Braganza and Hapsburg.

^That flag, is inspired by the original Brazilian Empire flag.

The Green - The green rectangle is linked to the colors of the House of Bragança, in Portugal. On the other hand, it symbolizes the country of "eternal spring" in the words of Dom Pedro I.

The Yellow - The most accepted explanation is that it is bound to the colors of the House of Habsburg (Empress Dona Leopoldina was originally Habsburg). The Coat of Arms of the Empire (to the center of the flag)

The vegetable branches - Are of coffee and tobacco, two riches of the Empire. They remained, in the Republic, in the Coat of Arms of the Republic (or Coat of Arms of the Republic).

The Cross of Christ - Right in the center is the Cross of Christ (it is one of the types of cross) that reminds us Portugal and the Order of the Knights of Our Lord Jesus Christ, the name that in Portugal took the Order of the Templars. It figured in the sails of the caravels because it was originally the financing of navigations, since it was a very rich organization at the time of the discoveries.

The Armilla Sphere - It is the symbol of the majestic power in Portugal and, by extension, among the peoples of its origin. It is a sphere formed by armilas, which are metallic circles. It symbolizes the world, too.

The Blue Banner With Stars - The stars symbolize the provinces of the Empire, numbering nineteen. It is always interesting to remember that the largest of them was that of Grão Pará, which was formed by the present states of Pará and Amazonas. Therefore, the constitutional title of the heir of the Imperial Prince (or Imperial Princess), who was the presumptive heir of the Crown, was that of Prince of the Great Pará. To better understand, if S.A.I. And R. Prince Dom Bertrand, present Prince of Brazil for being the successor of the Chief of the Imperial Household, were married and had children, his heir would have the title of Prince of the Great Pará.

The Crown - Above the Coat of Arms is the Imperial Crown (other than the Royal Crown).
