They have these Greek references on there:

- Cretan
- East (non-Cretan Aegean islands)
- North mainland
- South mainland (Peloponnese)
- Central mainland (Athens area)

This will show the distance to each. I have listed for each person, their first Greek match and the distance. Each line item is a DIFFERENT person.

NE Sicily is basically Crete. Over half of them score Crete BEFORE SICILY. The other regions lean toward Greek East, or are divided between scoring there and Crete.

Around half of these Sicilians score either Greek East or Crete as #1.

IN TOTAL: 107 people

Crete as #1: 55/107
Greek East as #1: 51/107
Greek South as #1: 1/107

How many samples did they use for the Greek South Marker?

I am unsure, it is not listed. But my guess is it is not a rural sample from Mani or Tsakonia.

What I will say is this: people scoring 'Greek East' are more mainland-like than people scoring 'Greek Cretan' which is the most MENA shifted of the Greek references. So basically half of these Sicilians are more or less equivalent to pure Cretans, half of them would be between Cretans and mainlanders. One person is more or less akin to a mainland Greek.

This is more or less in line with the studies like Paschou et al, but it definitely shows Sicilians, Cretans, and Aegean islanders are all close. I assume Maniots and Tsakonians would be more akin to these people and less to other mainlanders.

I don't think anything will ever come out of a study implying Sicilians are closer to mainland Greeks than to islanders, because we can clearly see this is not true.

Eventhough it doesn't affect much the pattern here that seems clear, you should keep in mind, these values are just order of match/mismatch. Two individuals can have the same "distance' to Crete for example but not in the same genetic position relative to it. Diverging from say sample1 @4 can mean different things, it could be west or east of it (even north) but that isn't equal to being straight south @4. As usual it's better to see that on a pca, but you can probably guess most of the positions with the better fits of 2,3,4 pop or mix mode.

My guess is that like on the PCA plot here: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?204897

these Sicilians will appear on all sides of Crete. Anyone scoring "Greek East" first is automatically north of Crete by a small amount, though, because that is an Aegean island (non-Cretan, non-Dodecanese) sample and they have more Northern affinity than the Cretan sample.
