In ancient Greek, the Balkan Peninsula was thus known as the "Peninsula of Haemus" (Χερσόνησος τοῦ Αἵμου), a name which retains some currency in modern Greek.

"Balkan" comes from a Turkish word meaning "a chain of wooded mountains".

Which name do you think is better?

Greek words beat Turkish anytime. But I can't care less.
