I consider Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and China to be a testament to the 'authoritarian advantage' postulated by the political scientist Seymour Martin Lipset, i.e. that authoritarian governments are more capable of delivering rapid economic and human development than democratic governments, particularly in underdeveloped countries.

Japan did have a democratic government, but it was one that granted itself relatively great powers and engaged in economic planning. Japan also had the advantage of starting out with a more educated and skilled population.
