The thistle has been the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III (1249–1286) and was used on silver coins issued by James III in 1470. According to the legend, an invading Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scots army encampment. I believe this is the Swedish national flower, Linnaea borealis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linnaea). Sorry, Swedes, for posting this. It is just that we named our daughter, Linnea Valerie. We love the name Linnea. We also love the flower. (I have visited Carl Linneaus' homestead which gave me the idea of the name too.)

'Nothing but' is over cynical. Henry VII didn't have to put the white in there, but he did.

I'm inclined to see that as rather unlikely. I have read that the rival Houses weren't quite so firmly linked to the rose symbols as was taught later, and that nobody would have known at the time that they were living during the 'Wars of the Roses', but I can remember nothing of any detail.

Our official national bird is the wren btw, (a very tiny bird about half the size of little robins;- wrens are the second smallest bird on our island.) Wrens have a very loud and delightful song though for such tiny birds.

The little European robins are voted by British people as being our favourite national bird. (They're cute, but extremely territorial and will often kill other robins entering their territory.)

I like roses... they can be a symbol of gentle love, but they also have thorns and a defensive side too. The thorns help to protect them in nature. They're extremely resilent flowers. I think they represent the English spirit well... we can be gentle and loving towards people, but we can also be thorny and defensive if threatened or attacked.
