That village on the mountains, Curral das Freiras, is a pretty hard place to get to.
When there was a great storm with floods and landslides in Madeira, earlier this year, the town was effectively cut off from the rest of the island, there was no way for rescuers to help the people in there.
The people from Madeira are incredibly hardworking, the day after the catastrophe everyone was on the streets cleaning everything they could and a few months later you could barely notice there had been such a disaster in there such a short time ago.
I really advise people visit the islands, unless you're afraid of landing a big plane on a small island, like myself - which is why I've never been in either the Azores or Madeira. :p

Guimarães (Minho)
Guimarães (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɡimɐˈɾɐ̃ȷ̃ʃ]) is a Portuguese city located in Braga District, in the North of Portugal and in the Ave Subregion (one of the more industrialized subregions of the country), with a population of 52 181 inhabitants, distributed throughout 20 parishes (freguesia in Portuguese), in an urban area of 23,5 km² with a population density of 2 223,9/km².
It is the seat of a municipality with an area of 241,05 km² and 162 636 inhabitants (2008), divided in 69 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipality of Póvoa de Lanhoso, to the east by Fafe, to the south by Felgueiras, Vizela and Santo Tirso, to the west by Vila Nova de Famalicão and the northwest by Braga.
It is an historical city that had an important role in the formation of Portugal and it was settled in the 9th century, at which time it was called Vimaranes. This denomination might have had its origin in the warrior Vímara Peres, when he chose this area as the main government seat for the County of Portugal which he conquered for the Kingdom of Galicia.
Guimarães is one of the most important historical cities of the country. Its historical center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it one of the largest tourist centers in the region.

Porto
Porto (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈpoɾtu]), also known as Oporto (English), is the second largest city in Portugal. Its administrative limits (an area of 41.66 km²/16 sq.mi) includes a population of 220,000 inhabitants distributed within 15 civil parishes. The urbanized area of Porto, which extends beyond the administrative limits of the city, has a population of 1.1 million[2][3] in an area of 389 km2 (150 sq mi),[2] making it the second-largest urban area in Portugal. The Porto Metropolitan Area includes approximately 1.3 million people,[4][5][6] and is recognized as a Gamma-level global city by the Globalization and World Cities (GaWC) Study Group.
Located along the Douro river estuary in northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centres, and registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. Its settlement dates back several centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its Latin name, Portus Cale,[7] has been referred to as the origin for the name "Portugal," based on transliteration and oral evolution from Latin.
One of Portugal's internationally famous exports, port wine, is named for Porto, since the metropolitan area, and in particular the adegas of Vila Nova de Gaia, were responsible for the production and export of the fortified wine.

The Castle of São Jorge is a moorish castle that occupies a commanding position overlooking the city of Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, and the broad Tagus River (Portuguese: Rio Tejo) beyond. The strongly fortified citadel, which, in its present configuration, dates from medieval times, is located atop the highest hill in the historic center of the city. The castle is one of the main historical and touristic sites of Lisbon.

I had posted Castelo de São Jorge, Lisbon, earlier, there's no need to repeat the same. It was conquered, indeed, to the Moorish invasors by Portugal's first king D. Afonso Henriques in the 12th century, as well as many others south of the Mondego. Not only fortifications, but also some mosques they had built here and which were then either destroyed or converted to Christian churches. By the way, you are not welcome here.

The palheiro is a Portuguese traditional wooden house, built on stilts that can be wooden as can be stone pillars.
Despite the name, these barns are not suitable for storing straw, but for housing. The huts were a type of construction typical of Aveiro, where the sandy terrain and marshy not allowed to build houses on the ground. The buildings palafitte made possible that the waters of the estuary might rise, flooding the ground without them reach the housing. Also allowed the sand, dragged by the wind to pass freely underneath the house without it to accumulate against the walls .

Castelo de São Jorge.
It stands high in one of Lisbon hills, in a site occupied since at least the 6th century BC. There are traces of occupation by Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians. After the Roman conquest of Lusitania, the so-called Olissipo was granted by the Roman governor, the praetor Caius Julius Caesar the title of Felicitas Julia. After the fall of the Empire, it was taken by the Germans, first by the Suevi and then by the Visigoths. In 719 would fall into Muslim hands and was called Al-Ushbuna. It would be retaken by Christians in 796 the first time, however, there was a considerable distance to the Christian bases further north and the various Christian takeovers were only temporary. It is finally conquered by Afonso Henriques in 1147.

S. Jorge isn't a moorish castle because it has been rebuilt a few times, always with christian architecture. Of course, foreigners like "Kosovo is Serbia" or whatever don't know that.
Here is what a real moorish castle looks like, in Alcácer do Sal, southern Portugal:

Sure it is one of the few surviving pieces of islamic architecture in Portugal (the best one being Mértola's church), but given the amount of revampings it suffered, truth be told, there's not much left that could still make Alcácer castle resemble a typical Qasbah...
It even has a roof and a parabolic antenna now :D

The Church of Mértola is a reuse of the former mosque of XII-XIII centuries. It was with the Knights of Santiago in 1238, after sacred to the use of Christian ritual, that this building of was firstely changed from a mosque.
Today, the church features a Mértola Mudejar theme of the sixteenth century, maybe the only mudejar art example in Portugal. But nevertheless, it is possible, from certain architectural and decorative elements like small minarets, reconstitute the Moorish temple.

The phrase "as old as the Braga’s Cathedral!" is justified. It is the oldest Portuguese cathedral and the early Portuguese records date back to 1070 but there was already a paleochristian temple of five ships which in turn was based on a Roman temple to the goddess Isis.

The Douro Vineyards Region produces wine for more than 2000 years; it is a UNESCO World Heritage site for cultural landscapes; it is, since 1756, the first bordered wine producing region in the world; it is the most fantastic place for a romantic weekend that includes the finest wines, gastronomy, cruises in the 200 km Portuguese Douro waterway route, sleep in the most exquisite manor houses and enjoy unrepeatable landscapes. I love this land.

Origem do nome do rio Nabão em Tomar.
http://i1074.photobucket.com/albums/w420/1Catrau/Tomar164.jpg

http://www.jf-lumiar.pt/media/upload/estandarte.jpg
No inicio do séc.
No séc.

Ponte De Lima. The oldest village in Portugal
According to what I've read the oldest village/city in Portugal is Mértola. It is a melting pot that since ever attracted people from the east Mediterranean and northern Africa. The Guadiana river could be sail until Mértola that, on the other hand, was close to very rich metal ores. It was a Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman (Myrtilis Julia), Visigothic, Moor (Martulah) and Christian (Portuguese) city. Hannibal Barca’s father (Hamilcar) was killed by the Lusitani in a campaign to control the region. Their inhabitants have the richest genetic heritage in Portugal and it's thought to account for more than 3500 years of history. Certainly, before it was captured by those foreign nations, it must have been a Céltico stronghold because since ever they were, with the Lusitani and other Iberian tribes, masters in manufacturing the famous Iberian swords (gladius and falcata) and the finest metals to manufacture it were in their territory.

By referring to Ponte de Lima, maybe you meant that it received its Carta de Foral (Forum letter) by the hands of Countess Teresa, mother of Afonso Henriques in 1125, before the foundation of Portugal itself, under this viewpoint, maybe the most ancient Portuguese city to receive that title under a Portuguese government.
For Teresa, Fernando Pessoa wrote the famous words "Mãe de Reis e avó de Impérios, vela por nós" ("Mother of Kings and grandmother of Empires, take care of us"). There is this incredibly beautiful statue of her, giving the city title (Carta de Foral) in front of Ponte Lima's Paço do Marquês. She wears a crown as if she was a queen. I've photographed her 2 years ago:

Funerary Stele of Tinhela (Chaves, Vila Real)
"Devoted to the god Manes.
Ala, daughter of Calpurnius,
placed the monument to Aia,
mother model of piety. "
Calpurnius (the father) is a Latin name but the mother and the daughter names, respectively Aia and Ala are indiginus but more often seen in Celtiberian and Asturian lands. This stele shows that those names could be also found in Calaican (Galician) and Lusitanian territory.
Note the fantastic triskel on the top.

My dear Portuguese friends, I'm wishing you all the best 2013 possible. I wish for us all happiness, health and peace.
I'm especially thinking about Riki, Alex, Labrador, Adamastor, Plastictuga and Trunks. From this small rectangle with it's beautiful Atlantic appendices, this garden by the sea we love so much and that right now in such a difficult context, present us an unparalleled occasion to rediscover ourselves. That's what I've been doing lately and Yes, I can confirm: we "rock", we are, as some of our poets suspected, an elected people. An honorable history has been built by our forefathers since the dawn of times and it's time now to regain that place that is waiting for us and that we've been neglecting in the last 200 years, first because of destruction by war and then because of the loss of dignity of our politicians.
I explain: This loss of dignity seems to be due to the abandonment of the central/north-European guideline regained with D. João I (1383) and an embrace to the Mediterranean mentality after the Marquis of Pombal stepped out as Prime Minister (1777). This man rebuild a nation after a massive earthquake only to be destroyed by the French 25 years later starting the downfall that brought us here.
We need to change everything again.
We need to start it as soon as possible.
Cheers, Happy New Year.
I also invite you to sign in the Portuguese Members Group that I've started since the old one is in the hands of Zephir and he was banned a long time ago.

^^^Dasssse, esse lugar faz-me arrepios.

Santiago do Cacém

The Pico vineyards are just fascinating. It's a very smart way of cultivating vines in such a climate, it could be emulated in other windy countries with earlier varieties (probably not commercially though).
