This experiment is designed to test whether you can spot the difference between a fake smile and a real one

It has 20 questions and should take you 10 minutes

It is based on research by Professor Paul Ekman, a psychologist at the University of California

Each video clip will take approximately 15 seconds to load on a 56k modem and you can only play each smile once

I got 17 out of 20. The three that I got wrong were supposed to be genuine, but I rated them as fake. I suspect they weren't that genuine.

I’m less inclined to trust people, so I’m more likely to look for lies.

Fake smiles are rather easy to spot as they don't look inwards afterwards.

I only got 10/20. I don't understand this test...aren't all of them technically giving a fake smile? They've seemingly all been told to smile for the camera, which makes them all fake. Just about everyone went back to a neutral stare after their smile, while a real smile lingers.

I expect they are made to smile/laugh and then instantly go back to a neutral look. This can be seen in some of the participants in their attempts to withhold their smiles.

15/20 for me as well. After reading your comment, it strikes me as ironic that I based most of my choices on a specific distrust of women's displayed emotions. Men (except feminine men) are more genuine about the emotions they show, and so I judged the men to be more trustworthy - except the Negro - which improved my score I think. So it appears my prejudices may have coloured my choices somewhat - I'm not sure if this defeats the purpose of the test.

Most people are surprisingly bad at spotting fake smiles. One possible explanation for this is that it may be easier for people to get along if they don't always know what others are really feeling.

Although fake smiles often look very similar to genuine smiles, they are actually slightly different, because they are brought about by different muscles, which are controlled by different parts of the brain.

Fake smiles can be performed at will, because the brain signals that create them come from the conscious part of the brain and prompt the zygomaticus major muscles in the cheeks to contract. These are the muscles that pull the corners of the mouth outwards.

Genuine smiles, on the other hand, are generated by the unconscious brain, so are automatic. When people feel pleasure, signals pass through the part of the brain that processes emotion. As well as making the mouth muscles move, the muscles that raise the cheeks – the orbicularis oculi and the pars orbitalis – also contract, making the eyes crease up, and the eyebrows dip slightly.

Lines around the eyes do sometimes appear in intense fake smiles, and the cheeks may bunch up, making it look as if the eyes are contracting and the smile is genuine. But there are a few key signs that distinguish these smiles from real ones. For example, when a smile is genuine, the eye cover fold - the fleshy part of the eye between the eyebrow and the eyelid - moves downwards and the end of the eyebrows dip slightly.

Scientists distinguish between genuine and fake smiles by using a coding system called the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), which was devised by Professor Paul Ekman of the University of California and Dr Wallace V. Friesen of the University of Kentucky.

I clicked I'm very pessimistic about life, the most extreme option(I live in Albania) and I clicked that I'm very confident(the most extreme option) that I'm going to find out the fake smiles(at least I thought I was).
