Karl Plutus, the oldest man in Estonia, died on Friday at the age of 106.

Born in the Kolu village in Viru County, Plutus moved with his parents and five siblings to St. Petersburg in 1913 where his father had found work in a knitwear factory, Õhtuleht reported. At the age of 13, he was witness to the storming of the Winter Palace as the Bolshevist Revolution swept over Russia.

In 1921, Plutus returned to Estonia and held a succession of jobs, including assistant train driver and narrow-gauge railway electrician. After World War II he studied law and worked as a prosecutor and lawyer in then-Soviet Estonia.

His wife Vera, whom he married in 1929, died in 1995. They had no children.
