At their meeting in Stockholm on November 15, Foreign Minister Urmas Paet and Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt confirmed Estonian and Swedish participation in the EU Nordic Battle Group for the first half of 2011.

Fifty Estonian soldiers will contribute to the group. “Sweden and Estonia are participating together in the stabilization of Afghanistan, and we share the viewpoint that international contributions must continue until Afghanistan no longer poses a threat to the rest of the world,” Paet said.

The ministers also touched on EU relations with Russia. Paet and Bildt confirmed their support for Russia to join the World Trade Organization (WTO). “We still must resolve the border-crossing queue problem,” Paet added. Talking of the upcoming summit for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Paet and Bildt both stressed the need to address Georgia’s territorial integrity and matters related to the Transnistria and Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts.

Paet and Bildt expressed support for the continuation of EU enlargement negotiations with Turkey and Iceland and the conclusion of negotiations with Croatia.

Paet also met with EU Affairs Minister Birgitta Ohlsson, and he will meet with representatives of the Estonian community in Stockholm.
