It’s 8:30 p.m., and all eyes turn to Italy’s most popular satirical news program, Striscia la Notizia (Strip the News). Two middle-aged men stand under a strobe light, one of them holding a belt from which dangles a vaguely phallic string of garlic. A woman slides across the floor on her stomach, wearing a sequined costume with a thong bottom and a deep-V neckline that plunges below her navel. As she stands up, one of the men dangles the garlic in front of her open mouth. She takes it in her hands and rubs it across the side of her face. “Go, turn around, let’s give you a little look,” the other man says, and touches the model’s derrière. “Thank you, doll.”

That’s how prime time is in Italy. The parade of prurience is inescapable, an expression of the rot that’s now manifest at the very top of the Italian government, a reflection of the society’s deeper problem with the evolving role of women. While headlines tell an endless tale of teenage models, paid escorts, and Moroccan belly dancers cavorting with 74-year-old Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the media make it clear that men are men, and women are window dressing. Boycotts, protests, and even complaints are rare, and when they’re voiced, few listen. So while Berlusconi may well be acting like a dirty old man these days, it has to be said that a goodly number of Italian women have been willing to play his demeaning games for a long time.

He might have planned things this way. Long before Berlusconi won his first stint as prime minister in the 1990s, the scandal-ridden media mogul owned 45 percent of Italy’s television market. He gained control of state television—another 50 percent—as head of government. With 95 percent of the TV market now under Berlusconi’s umbrella, his cumulative influence on the way Italian women are seen and see themselves is hard to overstate. So are the negative results for Italy: while other European lands actively promote gender equality as a builder of national prosperity, Berlusconi has led the charge in the opposite direction, effectively stifling women by creating a world in which they are seen first and foremost as sex objects instead of professional equals.

An appalling portrait of Berlusconi’s Italy emerges from the World Economic Forum’s October 2010 Global Gender Gap Report. The WEF looks at such issues as wage parity, labor-force participation, and career-advancement opportunities for women, arguing that closing the gender gap Europe-wide could boost the euro zone’s GDP as much as 13 percent. But as things stand now, Italy would be left leering on the sidelines. In every category but education, Italy lags badly: in labor participation, 87th place worldwide; wage parity, 121st; opportunity for women to take leadership positions, 97th. In the report’s overall ranking, Italy now places 74th in the world for its treatment of women—behind Colombia, Peru, and Vietnam, and seven places lower than it did when Berlusconi returned to office in 2008. “Italy continues to be one of the lowest-ranking countries in the EU and deteriorate[d] further over the last year,” the report says.

Saying this may not win me any popularity here, but one might suggest that Italy's woman problem may be in some ways connected to the relatively low incidence of certain other problems in the country:

vs.

http://i56.tinypic.com/15hdjbr.jpg

The horrible reality in many European countries in the 20th Century seems to be that women, after campaigning long and hard for the right to vote and run for political office, now seem hell-bent on relinquishing those rights by importing as many people as possible who would deny them those rights.

What the hell have to do italians with Berlusconi?
Italians voted a political program not Berlusconi cause we fell in love with him, nor with his tv programs nor with his sexual preferences.
We are not still as bigot as many other countries to judge a man only because he likes women.
He's pathetich and old?
Okay, but his governemnet it's not only him, there are several valid people which are doing great.

Striscia la Notizia is one of the best satyrical program ever created and it was able in time to resolve lot of issues with satyre. There a couple of girls in Bikini(Not even in bikini with short pants) so what?
Americans dare to accuse us of what?
Isn't MTV a place where sex, bad words, implicit and explicit sexual situations happen at every time of the day and which target is directed to young people?

Sincerely It is not Berlusconi who created a program called "My sweet 16"...
Was not Berlusconi who did entire programs talking about how Monika Lewinsky su@@ed Clinton below his desk.

As for the gender gap, a place englightened like France scored the 46 place below Uganda, Nicaragua and Mozambico so we should think that France is something to blame as well?

I see always a lot of approximation in these articles against Italy to be real.

San Galgano, to accuse Americans to have MTV is not a good method to solve our problems. Berlusconi controls Italian TV... MTV exists also in Italy, but thank to Berlusconi now we have also Big Brother, Uomini e Donne, Amici, Fame... and the top of the top... In the middle of the crisis he purposed the 2SWITCH OFF, so families who ship in very bad economical moment now have also to buy a decoder otherwise they won't be able to watch TV anymore.
Couldn't he choose a better time for this "epocal" passage to the digital?
Sincerly I am not dying without digital TV. I don't watch TV anymore since years. There are only craps.
But it is true that our TV shows only asses and boobs and who controls TV? Berluska obviously.

I believe in the represantativness of someone who is accusing me so Usa can't accuse us of nothing in this moment to be real.

If i were you i would ask for some analyst to solve your Berlusconi phobia anyway.

Why don't you accuse him also for JFK murder?
read this about digital decoder..

P.s decoder costs 15 euro....a lot less than the shit of canone Rai...

...anyway how many time have i to repeat that i don't give a flying...about Berlusconi.?
You remeber me Sgarbi when he keeps on saying the same words against the guys of Le Iene.

I voted once for Silvio in 1996 when he seemed to be a new kind of politician arose from the common society and not being raised in the old fashioned system of parties , I voted him because of several reasons , I wanted less taxes , less leftism generally speaking and less big government.
To put it short he didn't do anything , he's just mind his own business , he's got our country humiliated (especially with the Gheddafi cases) and ridiculed , he is a man with a 1950s mindset , the problem is the others are no better so I gave up voting.
The only really positive thing he , and also the Lega , has brought is we can talk what we want without fearing of getting censored or even worse but it's too little for my taste.

I went to see a digital decoder price and it is not of 15 euros. Maybe there are but are not foundable. They cost about 60 euros and there are also other technical probs with digita, but it is an other story and too long also. What surprises me is that among all the European directives that Italy has not actuated yet Berlusconi actuated so fast something regarding TV. Is it just a coincidence that it is he to have some factories of decoders? :D

About Geddhafi it is my opinion that Berlusconi is preparing a way to go to Lybia like Craxi and to obtain protection from him otherwise when nobody will vote for him anymore he will finish very soon in jail.

We already are censored. Read in which place we are for freedom of stamp in the world :)

I don't know what the real gender gap in Italian daily society is because I'm not living there. But I've watched some Italian TV now and then and certainly the level of objectification of women still shocks me from time to time. As I said, I don't know if that is appliable to the rest of areas, but IMO the image offered to the world is of a continuity of old Benny Hilloid patterns in many aspects.

How can be that applied to a real machism and objectification of women of in italian society?
I mean, it's like when some studies says that men betray women more than the other way around.
If a man betrays, he does it with a woman for what i know.
If women didn't want to be objectified in Berlusconi's tv nobody would force them.
Probably women in Italy are more inclined to show themselves in TV than they are in other european countries(i have my doubts that all the other European countries are without faults so much to the point to address only it to Italy...)and see tv as a way to show themselves and overabuse it.

Sincerely when i look at some Big Brothers made outside of Italy i'm shocked about the deep level of debauchment and decay of behaviours and thoughts compared to the ones made in Italy that are a lot more prudish.
Now those are everyday young people, not the few italian women that choose to show their ass as it may happen in some Berlusconi's tv.
Then my thought could be that the degeneration is a lot bigger in other countries where young people of Big Brother really are the mirror of society and not the few girls using italian tv as a launch platform.

The problem with women is not only on TV, San Galgano. A female friend of mine has been assaulted some nights ago while she was returning home in an attempt of rape. She went to the police station and the maresciallo asked her what she was wearing during the assault! Then he added that they won't start the procedure of report unless an other similar case will reach their station.
So not only we have a shitty TV, we have also a shitty police.
Lucky for the maresciallo it was not me to report, otherwise, hearing his answers, I would have put my hands on him for a "lesson of good manner", policeman or not.
I am very disappointed for this case. The only way to obtain justice here apparently is the faida.

There are hundred cases all over Europe and Usa where raped women were charged of wearing too provocative.
I still remeber a movie with Jodye Foster based on a true story.

To me you need to make your suitcase and go live for a couple of years in another country, and not only hearing some self boosted egoes here saying that Italy is to blame for everything and that their countries are in absolut the best a man could wish.
A week here and there it's not enough to judge a country.

I second what San Galgano said , today women in Italy can live very safely as regards violence if compared with USA or even France , Vampire don't get fooled by the media , they love to portray our country as a shithole for women and tend to overemphasize crimes on women.

The worst problem regardin women is in my view , in the work , bosses hardly hire a woman beacuse they fear she'll get a baby sooner or later.

We should focus on resolving this problem , for the rest Italy , at least for me , it's a rather peaceful country , uncomparable with USA for instance.

You are two idiots! I am not speaking of a story that I watched on TV but of something happened to a friend of mine and the stalker was not Albanese or Romanian, but Italian and my friend was wearing jeans, not a miniskirt (but what changes?). She's the least provocative girl of the world. And even if she was naked this is not a good excuse to justify a tentative or rape. The answer of the carabiniere was simply shocking.
It means that we have to wait that an other girl goes to the station for the same case before they start a legal report. It is absurd!!
Lucky my bf doesn't reason like you. You accept passively this situation, that's why Italy doesn't change. I care a fuck of how it is in the USA or in France, I live in Italy and I care of my country that at the moment is governed by a psycopathic, has got one of the most degradating TV for women and is cutting money for university while evey politician in Italy earns more than 60.000 euros per month.

If we should judge an entire country cause Berlusconi likes to fuck or for a carabiniere who didn't behave righteously, we could close the borders and bomb almost every country in the world, even the most perfect.

Police answered that she had to denunce it soon, call the police when the potential raper was still there and wait the police on the street (!). Then that they have to wait for a second similar case to start the procedure of report.
In short, it must happen again.
The other thing that shocked me is that the girl has seen the man in face, so police could make an identikit, on the contrary they did nothing but just make her sign some papers with a summit of what had happened.

Quante rivestono posti importanti in media? Molto di meno degli uomini....

*this is not that I say, but what this reasearch says: Italy, if we speak of gender gap, is the worste of the European Union excluding Cyprus.
The research anyway is of 2007. Maybe a newer one would be better.

Why do you take Sweden as example when France is at 46° place?

San Galgano, this thread is not a trial about Italy but only about the situation of gender gap. I don't think that you can deny proved facts...
As far as I am concerned I am first a woman and then Italian. If I go abroad I can change nationalty but, I hope, I won't change gender :D

Vov:
I think you should find a boyfriend ,
And rich , as Silvio said , then you will stop this bs , you look too histerical , really.
You can't judge a whole country on the level of the Arabs just because an accident , accindents can happens , everywhere , I'm sure somethinh like that occured every now and then even in Scandinavia or USA.

Women in Italy are happy , freer then ever , enjoy a great lifestyle , the only real problem is that of jobs but it's economy , we men are also in trouble right now on that field.

Anzi for my taste Italy is even too women ruled , it's a country that got too feminized in recent years.

Even if it was just that cop who acted like that and all other policemen are not like him, it would still mean what he had done should not be tolerated and that action against him should be taken.

Him who?
the asshole cop?
how?would you want him to get fired?
I could agree but it's not that easy to fire people who work in the public sector (almost impossible).
By the way there are a lot of liberal/women association here , if she have the will she can contact them and file a suit against em , at least to raise the problem of this lazy cop.
Moreover keep in mind that we don't know how the facts went , it's only words of a VoV's friend we even don't know wether they have been overestimated or not...

I highly doubt that if a woman is on the verge of getting raped and report this to the local politce station they wouldn't do anything untill some more cases happen...
save if you live in a cesspool like Naples or Palermo of course.

Well, indeed so it happened. The fact that you have difficulties to believe it proves that you consider it immoral too.
Uh, now you start with personal offences. I already have the bf, since 4 years, but I continue to support equal condition for women. Is it strange or, according to you, a girl when she has a bf must becomes stupid or disinteressed in female affairs? :rolleyes2:

I don't see what the problem is. I generally distrust any study which focuses on a 'gap' of any kind as opposed to the situation of the county as a whole.

Also, the article fails to make any sort of logical connection between: female news presenters wear slutty clothes, Berlusconi has mistresses (I don't recall the times of JFK or Clinton being regarded as 'setbacks for women'), and the supposed problem of low female participation in the labor force or whatever else that 'study' is whining about.

There are hundred cases all over Europe and Usa where raped women were charged of wearing too provocative.

Not in decades here...maybe 70s at the latest.

I second what San Galgano said , today women in Italy can live very safely as regards violence if compared with USA

It's not really a problem here, outside the urban areas where types of people congregate, and they mainly prey on eachother and those who voluntarily associate with them.
