wat is the surname?

Well, I'm a fool innit. Forgot to mention it. His name is
George Papagheorghe and he was born in Constanta. A area that was part of the Byzantine empire.

Papageorgiou is Greek though. 'Papa' is used exclusively in Greece.

Lol, doesn't get more Greek than that as far as surnames go.

It's due to the "Papa" part. I thought it was a Romanianized Greek surname.

I didn't say that anyone with that surname is Greek. I said that the roots of the name are Greek.

Gheorghe/George/whatever is also Greek. From Georgios. Georgia means agriculture in Greek.

I know different names that start with Papa. Like Papatraian for example...is this greek too?

Not true. It could simply be something left from the Byzantine rule of Romania.

East Med

If you think that he is East Med, you should stop classifying people. He is clearly Pontid.

Doubt it. Papageorgiou is one of the most common Greek surnames. Given there was always a large Greek minority there, it seems too much of a coincidence.

This guy could have some distant Greek origins, who knows. But not everyone with a 'Papa' in Romania has Greek origins.

I found another Papa......
Alexandru Papadopol
Looks less east Euro than the average Romanian I'd say

Exactly. Surnames are not always an indicative of someone's ancestry in Romania.

The vast majority of Romanians from Dobrudja descend from late 19th century settlers from Wallachia and Moldova. In Constanta the native population used to be Greek since ancient times, but during Communism most left to Greece. He can be a leftover of local Greeks OR someone with remote Greek ancestors transplanted during Ottoman rule. In Wallachia, Greek surnames are quite common (Gheorghiu << Georgiou, Dumitriu << Demetriou)

Pontid. His origins are probably just generic Romanian, but the surname itself in different forms is also present among Albanians, Vlachs and Greeks, just a ''descendant of an Orthodox priest named Gheorghe''.

He can definitely pass as Albanian.
