The World Wildlife Fund in Poland is planning to breathe new life into its lynx population with help from the animal's Estonian relatives.

"Studies find that Baltic lynx are genetically closest to the Polish species. That's why [the lynx] can't be imported from anywhere else," specialist Peep Männil told Eesti Päevaleht.

Wildlife experts will begin catching Estonian lynxes for the Poles next year. The most recent data counted 900 lynxes in Estonia. Hunters caught 180 lynxes last year. Poland, with a much larger territory, has only a few hundred survivors.

...

Untouched Estonian wildlife is indeed unique in Europe.

My question is how did they became endangered in Poland to begin with. And have measures been taken to prevent it from happening with the newly brought in specimens.

How come they didn't ask Russia or Romania, the countries with the largest population, for help instead?

Never mind. :P But it's strange, since the Carpathian mountains stretch all the way to Poland...
