The Estonian Swedes' cultural autonomy association is holding elections this weekend for a 21-seat council.
Twenty-five candidates are running in the three-day race. Candidates were nominated by all of the 11 Estonian Swedish cultural societies, and they needed at least 20 supporters from the minority population registry to confirm the nomination. The voters comprise the 1,000 Estonian Swedes listed in the minority registry. Three elections offices reside in Estonia and one in Stockholm.
Candidates include violinist and singer Sofia Joons, Rannarootsi Museum acting director Ülo Kalm, the education ministry's higher-ed director Mart Laidmets, tourism and marketing consultant Neeme Kari, Swecon Estonia director Elna Siimberg, doctor Kai Tennisberg, MallDisain director Valdek Slet, and Jonne Berggren, guardian of the island of Vormsi.
