View Full Version : Do North-Central Italians have more Germanic or more Celtic affinity?

People often assume Germanic input, due to some phenotypical similarities and geographical proximity.

But might many of the more "northern" affinities actually be linked to the fact that the northern 1/3 of Italy was, for much of history, a Celtic-speaking region that was continuous with France, and the people of Gallic derivation?

Also, the Italic and Celtic languages are said to be sister branches of the Indo-European family tree.

I'd guess Celtic.

I also think that we should view these northern affinities as native, not transplanted, as much of Italy was historically continuous with France.

What do you define by North-Central? Tuscany, Lazio?

Celtic from the Antiquity, Germanic from the Middle Ages, and a little earlier. It is interesting that most of the northern Italians who have Celtic or Germanic origins still retain an Italian look.

Celtic, they're more Swiss-like than Swedish-like

IDK, I have some North Central Italian blood thought it is Italic.

Yeah pretty sure celts are actually central European and not northwestern European. IDK really, but if you look at celtic people in ancient Europe, they were found mostly in France and central Europe.
