Gamla stan (The Old Town), until 1980 officially Staden mellan broarna (The Town between the Bridges), is the old town of Stockholm, Sweden. Gamla stan consists primarily of the island Stadsholmen. Officially, but not colloquially, Gamla stan includes the surrounding islets Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen, and Strömsborg. he town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction. Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the centre of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchants' houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II in November, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I.

This small lake outside Stockholm, Sweden, emits otherworldly sounds as Mårten Ajne skates over its precariously thin, black ice. “Wild ice skating,” or “Nordic skating,” is both an art and a science. A skater seeks out the thinnest, most pristine black ice possible—both for its smoothness, and for its high-pitched, laser-like sounds.

The Swedish Air Force or Flygvapnet during World War II was one of the largest in the world. By 1949 Luftvapnet was the fourth largest in the world with one thousand planes distributed across 55 divisions. If not counting the colonies of the British Empire it was the third largest just next to the United States and the Soviet Union. Saab developed some of the most iconic Swedish aircraft during this era.

In the middle of the bright summernight I went out to call for the cows. I thought that maybe, something deep inside them, remember the sounds from the ancient times when people called for them over far distances. They came running, together with a million mosquitos :) But what a magical night.

During the summer the young cows (heifers) comes to my village to spend some months eating fresh grass from the fields by the lake. As some of you know, I actually bought one of these cows last year. From the first time I saw her I just fell in love with her fluffy ears and kind eyes, and every time I did some kulning she was the first one to come. Maybe you remember that from one of my earlier kulning videos : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc7F_... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc7F_qv3eI8) She spent the winter on the farm, and now she is back here again to enjoy another summer outside. Almost every evening I go down to the field and call for her. I named her Stjärna, which means star in Swedish. But of course, all the other ladies comes aswell, even though they are not yet sure what to think of me haha. But we have a whole summer to get to know each other. So this video shows some very natural kulning with both short melodies and calling (lockrop) which is how it could have sound like on the farms for hundreds of years ago. I hope you like it! Lots of love to you all!

We were visiting my mother in laws little cabin by the sea. It's located in Gästrikland, not so far from Söderhamn. My friend Pelle, who is a photographer, recently bought a new camera and wanted to compare the sound quality from his phone and camera. So he asked me if I could "kula" over the water so he could record it. This way of singing is called kulning, it's an old Nordic tradition. It was used by women to call in the cattle and to communicate over big distances in the forest and mountains. Cows and cats use to react by being curious when I call but I have never seen a swan react before. Kulning är ett sångsätt man använde förr i världen för att locka på kor. Men jag kunde aldrig i min vildaste fantasi föreställa mig att en svan och hennes unge skulle komma när jag ropade!

A solid oak 1930's era tall case or grandfather clock plays the familiar "Westminster" chime melody from Big Ben in London every quarter hour and strikes the hour as well. The original 8 day brass movement has been professionally cleaned and oiled, keeping excellent time. Cast in brass with deeply embossed angels, the dial is engraved "Tempus Fugit," Latin for Time Flies. The hour or chapter ring has Roman numerals. All original with a very fine satiny finish, the case has wooden pegs and raised panels. All three doors have heavy weight hinges and latches. The lower glass is shaped and beveled. Three brass weights are wound by pulling the chains. This is elegant country furniture, expertly crafted in Sweden. Dimensions are 21" wide, 11" deep and 87" tall.

Took a trip to the ancient ridgeway at Vallbyåsen, Uppland, Sweden, on which is an Iron age grave field. Nearby there is the Broborg, a vitrified hill-fort built in the migration era. The site was in use since neolithic times, as the stone cup marks nearby show. The rocks of the fort were cemented together by glass, through a very clever process of applying extreme heat to the rocks...or maybe that was just a side effect from the legend of Grimsa, a Viking queen who was burned alive in the fort. We can't know for certain but it is a spooky and evocative place in any case.

Coffee is very very important to a Swede and if you want to make some coffee and have a fika, you better make it right! Hence, here is a little film about how to make the Swedish "kokkaffe" or boiled coffee. Kokkaffe is a classic old tradition where you boil coarsely grounded coffee with water and bring it to a boil. One old traditional way of making coffee, or kaffe as we call it, is to boil it also called "kokkaffe" (koka = boiling). If you ask me, the best way of doing kokkaffe is to make ut over an open fire. So, the "recipe" for making kokkaffe, or what I call boiled coffee, is simple yet a bit complicated depending on how you want to look at life (and coffee making) If you need them in writing, check out my blog post here to get all the information you need ;) http://allthingsgreen.nu/2019/02/how-... At one time, this was Sweden's Upper House (the Första kammaren - or First Chamber) until the Social Democrats got rid of (and of the former lower house of the Riksdag - the Andra kammaren - Second Chamber) it in 1970 in order to unite it into a unicameral parliament and consolidate their own power:

Here have Tacitus (perhaps the greatest of Rome's historians) describing to us his knowledge of the lands of the Swedes, Aestii and Sitones - modern day Scandinavia (and the lands across the Baltic Sea). Ancestors of the Vikings, Tacitus gives us a description of a people with no right to bear arms, and who in the far north of the lands live in a matriarchal society.

Date of Travel: JANUARY 2018
Airline: BRA Braathens Regional
Flight #: TF11
Aircraft: Avro RJ100
Livery: BRA Standard pastel rainbow
Route: GOT-BMA
Tail number: SE-DSV
Miles: 235
Airborne time: 0h56m
Notes: Aircraft swap from RJ85
Cost to book: Around £100, including bags and flexibility - one way.

Thanks for finding my video and pressing play! I was in Gothenburg in 2016 and noticed a strange-looking airline with odd “rainbow” style tail fins. I found out they were BRA Braathens Regional Airlines, a small domestic carrier operating mostly within Sweden from their hub at Bromma. So, naturally, I had to try them. At around £100 one way this was by no means a cheap flight. These Gothenburg to Stockholm shuttles are meant for the business traveller and priced accordingly. The flight was full of people off to do a day’s business in Sweden’s capital. However, even given the price, I was still impressed by their service standard. This is an airline that knows who its customers are and the product is sensible and thoughtful. There’s even a breakfast served on the flight, a coffee and drinks service, a hot towel and a second drinks run. Very impressive on a flight of under an hour. Of course, the real highlight for me was an opportunity to fly one of these old RJ aircraft again. I can remember when they were the staple of BA Cityflyer flights from London City back when I was starting my flying addiction. They’re a fun aircraft to fly. A bit cramped, but their uniqueness ensures charm overrides pragmatism for me. Make sure you have your notifications set! Enjoy the report.

In this video, join me on a 55 minute flight between Gothenburg Landvetter, Sweden and Copenhagen Kastrup, Denmark. This was my first flight with SAS and I was impressed. I really liked their lounge concept, which you will see towards the start of the video. The flight was operated by a Jet Time ATR 72, my favourite short haul prop aircraft.

Volvo is a company known for safe, reliable, boxy cars. That reputation was solidified in the public’s mind with the Volvo 240. Built for the wild, winter conditions of Sweden, this was a car designed to keep on going, no matter what. And go on it did, with a 19-year production run, outliving its replacement, the Volvo 700 series. So what’s the boxy Volvo got in common with the DeLorean, and how did Volvo win the Touring Car championship without selling any of the 500 type-specific cars it was supposed to?

A very funny video from a guy trying to sell his Volvo 240:

The soldiers of the Swedish Imperial Army known as Karoliner, or Caroleans, a strictly disciplined and aggressive fighting force whose notable tactics echoed throughout Europe during the Great Northern War between 1700 and 1721 and decided the fate of the Russian Empire. The Caroleans had a greater reliance upon bayonets and the spirit of the offensive giving them their reputation of being invincible. Their most noticeable victory that seemed to confirm their reputation was the Battle of Narva where a small Carolean relieve force defeated a significantly large dug-in Russian force.

Stockholm is Sweden's capital city and the largest of the country. We start our winter tour at the central Kungsgatan and Sveavägen crossing. Walking south to to centre of Stockholm we pass the Stockholm Concert Hall (Stockholms Konserthus) with the Weekend Market. On Sergelgatan there are many shops in this commercial center of Stockholm as we turn to Sergels torg where we started another walk ( https://youtu.be/Jr9x-RB4E1U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr9x-RB4E1U) ). This time we chose a different route from Norrmalm towards Gamla stan: on our way we see the Klara Church as we head to Stockholms Centralstation. From the train station we now head into the old town Gamla Stan. First we pass the Riddarholmen Church ( Riddarholmskyrkan ). Then we see the Nobel Museum, The Royal Palace (Kungliga slottet). It's getting darker and the cobble stoned streets are still busy with tourists on this cold winter evening. We end the walk at the Skeppsbron waterside as the night arrives. Filmed in November 2019

I have finally tested the Arctic Circle Sleeper Train, up to Kiruna in northern Sweden. The train is run by SJ ("Statens Järnvägar", train no. 94) and departs from Stockholm at 6 pm. It runs all the way to Narvik in Norway and the journey as a whole takes 18:46 hours. My journey starts in Sundsvall and I get off in Kiruna at 9:30 am, a total travel time of just over 10 hours. I make this trip with my partner and we have our own compartment in 2nd class. It is also possible to choose a divided cabin and part in a six-bed cabin. At Arctic Circle Sleeper Train there is no 1 class. This single trip in 2 class private cabin cost about 220 EUR, depending on when booking.

SJ is the market-leading train operating company in Sweden. I've traveled with them several times, both in first class and second class. Here I travel with their SJ3000 high speed train, also known as the X55. I booked the trip with points through SJ's loyalty program, "SJ Prio". I paid no taxes and no other fees, the journey simply cost nothing. The journey is between my hometown Östersund, in central Sweden to Stockholm. Travel time is 4:49 hours and I am in First Class and quiet zone (phone calls and loud talking is not allowed). I think it's SJ's best product. The biggest benefits of the SJ3000 are the comfort. Good spaces, comfortable seats and the fastest way to go by train in Sweden today. I hope you like the video! Have you traveled by train in Sweden yourself, and what did you think? Leave a comment and tell! Give the video a thumbs up if you like it and subscribe to the channel if you do not already. Thanks!

Ordered by Gustavus Adolphus in 1625 and launched in 1628 the Vasa was one of the largest and most powerful warships in the World. On her maiden voyage she sank in the Stockholm bay. The Vasa was the second out of three massive warships built for the swedish navy. Mars in 1563, Vasa in 1628, and Kronan in 1668. All three at their time was the largest ships afloat in the World and revolutionized naval warfare. Clips taken from the swedish documentary Vasa 1628. Music: Vangelis - Conquest of Paradise

Sweden - is an effective one party state with the other parties to the Social Democrats who have been using their people as guinea pigs for as back as the early 20th century.

While I was on my recent Copenhagen swing (see those four Streetfilms here ) I had enough time to take a jaunt to Malmö, Sweden to meet up with bike advocate Jennie Fasth who said she was going to take me on a "calm bicycle tour" to see the city. I had no knowledge of what was on her agenda, but she certainly didn't disappoint me. We saw a lot of neat bike stuff, the city and talked to a few residents. But the main attraction was getting to see the first ever (they believe) rental apartment building being built specifically for accommodating cargo bikes everywhere! Wherever you have wanted to bring your cargo bike - into your apartment, in the elevator, thru the grand entrance to the complex and - yes - you can even wheel it right into your kitchen and unload groceries! It's called The Bicycle House and it's being structured, "for people who want to live and have a fantastic life without owning their own car." Oh, and by the way, there are zero car parking spaces in this building. Zero!! Here is their blog: ohboy.se And it gets even better: it's also part bike hotel! Yup come stay in one of the 31 loft apartments on the ground floor. The developers, hauschild+siegel real estate, are hoping to have occupancy begin by the end of 2016. And for so much more amazing information go here: ohboy.se/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/160715-Cykelhuset-Ohboy.pdf And it gets even better: it's also part bike hotel! Yup come stay in one of the 31 loft apartments on the ground floor.

Something tells me within a few years, cyclists in every major city is going to want one of these buildings. But Jennie also showed me lots of other cool stuff. Including a massive bike parking station at Malmö Central, a brand new Cykelservicestation, where you can wash your own bike, fill up your tires and do small repairs along a major bike route, I got to hear about the Bicycle Library where you can "try out" cargo bikes for two weeks to see if they fit your lifestyle and of course biking around Malmö, where 30% of residents ride a bike daily! I think I need more surprise tours! Thanks, Jennie!

Yttrium, terbium, erbium and ytterbium were all named after one small town on the Stockholm archipelago. But it could have been different, and there could have been many other names. From a snowy bit of Sweden, and a mine that's a historical landmark, let's talk about discovery, chemists, and a man named Gadolin.

Interesting, software-enhanced, motion-stabilized, restored and AI colorized film about Stockholm (Sweden) in 1936. The speed of the film has been delayed by 30% to obtain the correct speed. Because of this, the audio has also been stretched and thus occasionally sounds a bit slurred. Stockholm is the cultural, media, political, and economic centre of Sweden as well as its capital. The city stretches across fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city to the east, and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. The area has been settled since the Stone Age, in the 6th millennium BC, and was founded as a city in 1252 by Swedish statesman Birger Jarl. It is also the county seat of Stockholm County [Wiki]. In 1936, the year of this film, an international Expo was held in Stockholm. In that year it had about half a million inhabitants. Nowadays that number has risen to 1.8 million in the urban areas.

The Dutch built the Swedish city of Gothenburg. Twice even! It was a city complete with canals, canals and dikes. What is left of that Dutch influence in the city? I went to explore Gothenburg (or Göteborg as the Swedes say).

What's it like to be dropped in a new city with ZERO knowledge, research or planning? In this video I wake up in Gothenburg, Sweden and try to find my way around without the help of maps, reviews, sense of direction, or any real idea of how things will turn out. And what I find is, in my mind anyway, probably the PERFECT city!

Entering Poland 24:49. The ferry is also Polish.

Today's challenge is to get from Gothenburg, Sweden to Gdańsk, Poland without flying. It won't be fast, but it will be interesting, combining a trip on Sweden's state-owned railway along with a Baltic Sea crossing with a ferry company I know nothing about. Which will come out on top? Come along with me and we'll discover it together, but fair to say it was a bit of a mixed bag...

I travelled this route on 9th and 10th May 2023.

All in one shot, this walk takes you around the part of Södermalm called Tanto: From the bridge between Södermalm and Årsta and Liljeholmen, through the communal gardens, to the lookout, passed the soccer field, down to the beach. It´s a grey Tuesday in October, people hurrying home from work, but nature is far from grey and displays its most glorious autumn colors.

Driving around the countryside in Swedish Lapland
This video shows the countryside around the small town of Piteå in northern Sweden.
Piteå has a subarctic climate, and is located about 180 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. This small town is located by the Gulf of Bothnia up in the North of Sweden. People live their lives slow here and they love it.

It´s easy to live a slow and peaceful life here in Lapland; the land of The midnight Sun and Polar nights. Piteå is peaceful, quiet, idyllic, and slow going. Life is slow in Lapland and Piteå and those who live here love living life slowly, enjoying the silence, the darkness and snow during winter, and the light during summer.
This is a typical Swedish life in a small town in northern Sweden. The slow pace and being friendly towards your fellow beings are significant for Swedes in the north.

Life in North Sweden is generally lived slowly. In Northern Sweden, people work hard and are peaceful Christians. People in North Sweden and Lapland appreciate outdoor activities and take every opportunity to go outside. Northern Sweden is sparsely populated with small towns and villages and a lot of wilderness. Winter in North Sweden is very long, dark, cold, and with a lot of snow. Summer in North Sweden is very, very short. The summer in northern Sweden has long bright nights and it is usually not very warm.

During winter, it is an almost polar night, ie it is dark around the clock. During the summer, on the other hand, it never gets dark. It is bright almost around the clock.

To feel at home in northern Sweden, you must enjoy outdoor activities, snow, and living life peacefully at a slow pace. One must also understand that prosperity and a good life are based on every man and woman working hard and that Sweden's wealth is based on the Swedish saying: "Do your duty, then you can demand your rights".

Virtual walk in the palace park. Adding captions with anecdotes found on wiki. This is the description found on the palace website:

Tullgarn, near Trosa in Södermanland, is one of our most popular royal destinations and is less than an hour away from Stockholm by car. Tullgarn Palace was the summer palace of King Gustaf V and Queen Viktoria. The palace park has avenues of lime trees, and makes a delightful spot for a picnic.

This royal summer palace – just an hour car journey from Stockholm – offers visitors a solace for the body and soul.

Behind the austere façade is a surprisingly light interior in a mixture of rococo, Gustavian and Victorian styles.

Tullgarn is associated with King Gustaf V and Queen Viktoria, who spend their summers here at the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s. However, the palace was originally built for Duke Fredrik Adolf in the 1770s.

Admire the Duke's interior design, one of Sweden's finest. Rest for a moment in the courtyard and breath in the fresh lake winds. Enjoy a cup of coffee in the café. Or have a relaxing picnic in the apple grove. Tullgarn is well-worth a visit.

The Swedish Warship Vasa, is the world's best preserved 17th century ship. On her maiden voyage in 1628, the Vasa never made it out of the Stockholm harbor. A gust of wind caused the ship to tilt, and since its gunports were open, water poured into the ship, causing it to sink into the cold waters of the Stockholm harbor. Efforts to raise the ship were futile, and after the cannons were salvaged, the ship lie forgotten in the mud until it was discovered almost 400 years later in 1961 by an amateur marine archeologist.

The mighty vessel has come to symbolize Sweden's Great Power Period, when the nation became a major European power and controlled much of the Baltic. Though not the largest or most heavily armed ship of its time, the Vasa was formidable: The 226-foot, 64-cannon ship could fire a combined weight of more than 650 pounds of shot from one side. But the maritime pride of Sweden never saw battle – it was too top-heavy, and it capsized and sank after sailing less than a nautical mile.

After the Vasa was recovered it has been displayed in its own museum since 1990, attracting more than a million visitors per year.

NOTE - Correction - The King who commissioned the Vasa was Gustavus Adolphus (1594 – 1632), also known in English as Gustav II Adolf or Gustav II Adolph. He was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632, and is credited for the rise of Sweden as a great European power.

Norrtälje is a locality and the seat of Norrtälje Municipality, Stockholm County, Sweden with 17,275 inhabitants in 2010. It is one of the largest towns in Roslagen.

Norrtälje’s early history dates back to the Iron Age. Around 225 ancient monuments have been found within what is now the city. Three ancient castles are assumed to have stood in the former villages Nordrona, Solbacka and Knutby. Norrtälje traces its more recent history to 1219, when the location was first mentioned as Tälje. After some time, the name officially became Norrtälje, to distinguish it from the other Tälje in the province, Södertälje.

The town of Norra Tällie was founded by King Gustav II Adolf in 1622, as were several other towns after the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War, The city arms were created as an upside down anchor as early as 1622 when the charter was granted.
In 1719, large parts of the central town were burnt down by a Russian army during the Russian Pillage of 1719–21. The new stone church was not finished until 1726, and it was another four years before the city hall was completed.

Norrtälje had a railway station on the narrow gauge Roslagsbanan from 1884 to 1969. It is now served by SL buses as a part of the system of public transport in Stockholm.

Norrtälje has a first class industrial heritage displayed in the Pythagoras Mechanical Workshop Museum, based in the premises of a former hot bulb engine factory.

Gustaf Cederström painted Bringing Home the Body of King Charles XII of Sweden in Paris in 1877-78. It is an imaginative portrayal of the royal hero's return to Sweden following the fatal shot at Halden in Norway in 1718. In order to make his picture as realistic as possible, Cederström painted numerous sketches and studies outdoors. He erected a stretcher, with a professional model, an Italian named Raffaele Fusco, lying on it and portraying Charles XII. Several small sketches in oils from 1877 survive. The artist has striven to make each of the soldiers an individual. The people whom he painted were a mixture of professional models, colleagues, friends and relatives. The man with a bandage on his head was the artist's oldest brother. The model for both the child next to the huntsman and the drummer boy was Cederström's six year-old daughter Carola. The painting was finished just in time to be accepted at the international exhibition in Paris in 1878. It was sold to the Russian Grand Duke Constantine Constantinovich. People in Sweden were up in arms the heroic death of the king of Sweden was sold to Russia. A collection was started and Cederström was asked to paint a replica, which was donated to Nationalmuseum. The original painting also made it to Sweden. It is owned by the Museum of Art in Gothenburg.

Virtual walk in Swedish town. Crisp autumn colors, some locals out and about, the river running through. #sweden #nyköping #swedentravel

About Nyköping from Wiki:

Nyköping directly translates to Newmarket into English. The prefix Ny is translated as New and köping is an old Swedish word for a market place and a commonly used suffix for cities in the south central region of the country (see Köping). The city is located near the open Baltic Sea on the Stadsfjärden inlet, and is regarded as a coastal location. Rivers Nyköpingsån and Kilaån reach the Baltic Sea through the southern end of downtown. The former river splits the town down the middle into an eastern and western part. There are multiple other inlets in the municipality, which has an extensive shoreline.

Typical of the region, the landscape is influenced by post-glacial rebound after the latest ice age. For thousands of years, the land of downtown Nyköping was an archipelago where the hills in town today formed many islands, while the flatter parts of the town were the seafloor.

In 1317 the Nyköping Banquet took place, a renowned episode in Sweden's history, when King Birger of Sweden captured his two brothers as revenge for earlier sufferings and had them imprisoned without food until they starved to death. (See Nyköpings gästabud.)

In the 16th century Nyköping became the seat of Duke Charles, who later became Charles IX of Sweden. With the status of a Royal residential seat, Nyköping was at its peak of development.
.
In 1665 large parts of the city including the fortress were damaged in a fire. The same thing happened again in 1719 when Russian troops invaded the city. It was then rebuilt with its current street plan.

Nyköping was industrialized relatively early compared to the rest of Sweden. In the early 19th century, textile industry was established, and the population soon rose as Nyköping's industry grew. In 1879, C.A. Wedholms mejerikärlsfabrik was founded, starting to produce milk churns. Wedholms still has activity in Nyköping and is a milk cooling tank manufacturer.

One evening in Stockholm last July, I took a night train exactly 1,000 kilometers up north. I stepped off the train in a small village the next morning, and was greeted by probably the biggest dog I have ever seen: Louie the Leonberger, one of the animals I would be looking after during the next month.

Together, we wandered for hours through Swedish wilderness every day.

Smelling blueberries at my feet, hearing crane birds fly over, being sure that just for a second the sunset gave this flower a colour no one has ever seen before.
