View Full Version : Why Cypriots on GEDmatch come up Levantine, but in professional studies PCA near Sicily/S. Italy?

Has anyone noticed this?

Cypriots according to professional studies always end up halfway between Sicily and the Levant, if not overlapping with the more outlying South Italians. On a study I just posted they are closer to Sicilians than to anyone else.

But on GEDmatch calculators, Cypriot references and individuals come up like a Levantine population.

Which is correct? And why do they differ?

Because even if you have a little bit more red sea or near east or east asian it is enough to throw you away from other populations that don't have it even if other components are similar.

So who do you think Cypriots are actually more similar to? Crete/Sicily/Ashkenazim, or full blown Levantines?

More similar to Cretans and Greek islanders

So here where they plot near "ItS" (Sicilian) and presumably Cretans would too, you think this is more correct?

Yes I think they should be south of Cretans. It also depends if they are Cypriots or assimilated Maronites.

What study is this from? The positioning of Ashkenazi Jews and Iraqi Jews (they look clustered very closely)....I find this curious as to how the dimensions were created. With reards to Cypriots, I think this makes sense.

This one is Lazardis et al. 2016

Also Druzes and Samaritans plotting close to Ashkenazis and more northern than even Sephardis from North Africa doesn't make sense.

Greek Cypriots speak a European language and follow a European religion. A lot of them look European too

I believe he was 1/2 Cypriot 1/2 Brit if I"m not mistaken which is pretty close to a mainland Greek.

But I've seen a lot Cypriots who look pretty Mainland Greek or West Euro as well.

That doesn't sound right, professional studies PCA Cypriots by Sicily? They're definitely wrong then, or the dimensions are super weird

He was only half Greek. Half British Jew on his mother's side, but yes some Cypriots can pass easily in southern Europe in general. I can see why women back then fawned over him, if the 80's was a human it would look like him.

I think Cypriots are more Levantine genetically. PCA plots tend to have a projection bias.
