If you have known matches, you can 'paint' your DNA by assigning segments to specific ancestors or groups. For example:

If I share DNA with my mother's paternal cousin, then I know that I inherited all of these segments from my maternal grandfather.
Or if I've identified a number of matches who are related to each other, it's likely we have the same common ancestors (even if I don't know who yet)
In both these cases, grouping the match segments and colour-coding them helps me to build up a picture of my DNA, and means when I overlay new matches, I can immediately see how they fit in to what I already know.

So I tried that paint your segment thing with someones DNA and it's interesting I think we are 3rd or 4th cousins although it seems to be unable to map it well. You basically paint the segment you get from GEDmatch and then it compares it to your either 23andme results and names or ancestry ones or ftdna idk like I like the 23andme file though for it. I think other than that you can calculate yourself in your brain how you're related to someone and through what line like based on the percentage you get on there. You just press after like paint new match it's interesting.
