View Full Version : Gagauz ?
This calc mdlp world 22 seems to give me Gagauz followed by Northern Italy? Seems to be a Turkic speaking tribe in Southern Moldova/north east Bulgaria, orthodox christians apparently.

I don't think these things should be taken serious tbh. These things are autism.
Genetic studies say they are genetically similar to Balkanites
The Gagauzes, although speaking a Turkic language, belong genetically to the Balkan populations and the Gagauz language represents a case of language replacement. Gagauz belong to Y-DNA haplogroups I2a (23.6%), R1a (19.1%), G (13.5%), R1b (12.4%), E1b1b1a1 (11.1%). Haplogroups J2 (5.6%) and Haplogroup N (2.2%) are represented among Gagauzes at a usual frequency for many European and Balkan peoples. Finally, the phylogenetic analysis of Y-DNA situates Gagauzes most proximal to Macedonians, Serbs and other Balkan populations, resulting in a high genetic distance from the Turkish people and other Turkic peoples.[9] According to a more detailed autosomal analysis of thousands of SNPs, not just of the sex chromosome, Gagauzes are most proximal to Macedonians, followed by Greek Macedonians apart from Thessaloniki, and others such as Bulgarians, Romanians and Montenegrins.[10]

They seem to be mainly Balkanites genetically speaking so maybe they are assimilated peoples of the Balkans i.e Romanians, Slavs etc

Gagauz people are very southern shifted for region they come from, they are in Moldova but plot south compared to rest of Moldovians, they're most similar to south Balkan people.

Gagauz are Turkified native Balkan people genetically, and they barely have any genetic or racial relations with Turks and other Turkic peoples except for language, that's all.

that seems to be the case, prior to moving to Moldova they were in the balkans, in Bulgaria and were partially assimilated, so now they are close to balkanites.
they moved to Moldova in the 19th century

The Gagauz people are a Slavic ethnic group which was linguistically Turkified.
They dont seem genetically Slavs but more similar to South Slavs like Bulgarians, and even non Slavs like Greeks according to what I am reading. And also Italians, Montenigrins, Albanians etc. Basically South East Europeans.
If Gagauz are simply turkified Bulgarians?
Turkified Romanians or Bulgarians or Turkified Balkanites seems to be the case

n the gene pool of the Gagauzes a total of 15 Y-haplogroups were identified, the most common being I-P37 (20.2%), R-M17 (19.1%), G-M201 (13.5%), R-M269 (12.4%), and E-M78 (11.1%). The present Gagauz populations were compared with other Balkan, Anatolian, and Central Asian populations by means of genetic distances, nonmetric multidimentional scaling and analyses of molecular variance. The analyses showed that Gagauzes belong to the Balkan populations, suggesting that the Gagauz language represents a case of language replacement in southeastern Europe. Interestingly, the detailed study of microsatellite haplotypes revealed some sharing between the Gagauz and Turkish lineages, providing some support of the hypothesis of the "Seljuk origin" of the Gagauzes. The faster evolving microsatellite loci showed that the two Gagauz samples investigated do not represent a homogeneous group. This finding matches the cultural and linguistic heterogeneity of the Gagauzes well, suggesting a crucial role of social factors in shaping the Gagauz Y-chromosome pool and possibly also of effects of genetic drift.

So they seem rather mixed like Romanians, Bulgarians etc. Some are more Balkan other more Slavic, Turkic etc. But these that I match obviously are Balkan.. as Balkan and Italian are the top countries of matches I get on every calc mostly.

They probably have some markers of Turkic origins. They've been living in the Balkans for nearly 1,500 years so it makes sense that whatever Turkic Bulgarian genes they brought with them were quickly faded out.

No the Persian loanwords in Turkish were there from the beginning, from their times in Khorasan (Turkmenistan) & coming into contact with Persian influence.
It's clear the Gagauz are some kind of relic population legacy of the Cumans/Pechenegs, in language at least.

Tatars (Cumans) say 'Sugish, for War. That Gagauz use a Persian word for war show that their ancestors were once upon a time Muslim Turkmens who lived in Khorasan with other fellow Turcomans.
Until a few centuries word Cenk was popular in Turkey, we succesfully replaced that with Savaş.

Even if so, the only argument I ever hear from Turks about a Turkish (Anatolian) origin of Gagauz is languge similarity.
It's a terrible argument because Turkic languages are mutually intelligible by all Turkic speakers:
In Cuman, the text is:
Atamız kim köktesiñ. Alğışlı bolsun seniñ atıñ, kelsin seniñ xanlığıñ, bolsun seniñ tilemekiñ – neçik kim kökte, alay [da] yerde. Kündeki ötmegimizni bizge bugün bergil. Dağı yazuqlarımıznı bizge boşatqıl – neçik biz boşatırbız bizge yaman etkenlerge. Dağı yekniñ sınamaqına bizni quurmağıl. Basa barça yamandan bizni qutxarğıl. Amen!
In English, the text is:
Our Father which art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who have done us evil. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. Amen.
In Kazakh, the text is:
Atamiz kim koktesin. Alğıstı bolsin seniñ atiñ, kelsin seniñ xanliğıñ, bolsin seniñ tilegeniñ - kalai kim kokte, solai da jerde. Kundelikti nanimizdi bizge bugin ber. Tağı jazıqtarimizdi bizge bosat - kalai biz bosatarmiz bizge jaman etkenderge. Tağı jınnıñ (şaitannıñ) sınağına bizdi qaldırma. Barşa jamannan bizdi qutqar. Aumin!
In Turkish, the text is:
Atamız ki göktesin. Alkışlı olsun senin adın, gelsin senin hanlığın, olsun senin dilemeğin – nice ki gökte, öyle (de) yerde. Gündelik ekmeğimizi bize bugün ver. Dahi yazıklarımızı (suçlarımızı) bize boşat – nice biz boşatırız (bağışlarız) bize yaman (kötülük) edenleri. Dahi şeytanın (yekin) sınamağına bizi koyurma. Tüm yamandan (kötülükten) bizi kurtar. Amin!

"Gagauz came from Anatolia" is another ethnocentric agenda pushed by Turks to Seljukify all people. They teach these things in your schools. I would have no problem if it were true, but it just doesn't look to be that way.

Who told you they came from Anatolia? It's not Hittites. Lydians or not even Armenians we talk about. :) Even Anatolian Greeks arent Anatolian in their early origins. Anatolia was Gagauz ancestors' last stop where they stayed (Seljuks of Rum times) no more than 100 or 150 year :)

That doesnt mean much. Bulgarians wanna be closer to them they invent those lies. Bulgarians are in identity crisis, they dont want to be grouped with Serbs etc so they want to go to the roots of old Bulgars who were Turkic but that's also a problem since they border Turkey and have long history of conflicts. So they try to bypass Turkish Turks and open a way to Chuvash through Gagauz.

My guess is some probably intermarried with Albanians and Torbeshi(Bulgarian Muslims) since they are predominantly Muslim no?
Nah. Gagauz are Orthodox Christian.
Btw I got them as my first population on MDLP World-22 as well:
# Population (source) Distance
1 Gagauz (derived) 4.4
2 Bulgarian (derived) 5.09
3 Romania (derived) 5.55
There Must be some sort of problems with you Albos or with the test. Its not normal you have a Turkic group from Bessarabia as your match. Or maybe you have some unknown Turkic ancestry like a Turkoman horseman from Middle Ages:)

Tatiana is Gagauz studying in Istanbul. In the beginning she says our ancestors were Oğuz who came from the Altay region.
