View Full Version : Genetically closest Greek region to Sicily?

Have we ever come to a conclusion on this?

Based on these, all of the islanders are roughly equidistant, but the mainlanders all further: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?215712-New-Greek-results-on-PuntDNA-L-K13-from-all-over-the-islands-and-mainland

Based on other studies they just put them in a continuum with Crete, Dodecanese, and the southernmost Peloponnesians.

Going based on distances to the Sicilian reference population this is what we have, based on average of the distances in PuntDNA-L K13 of the results I have run.

It seems like Sicilians are actually closer to the non-Cretan islanders, than to Cretans though some of the other islands shift toward the mainland more. Thessaly is by far the furthest away result, in "other mainland".

Ikaria and Cyclades had the most textbook Sicilian-like results, but overall Dodecanese islanders seem to be closer than the North Aegean, so if you had to take an island group AS A WHOLE it must be Dodecanese. Cyclades has some outliers that shift too far to the mainland.

North Aegean: 2.94, 2.98, 3.36, 3.78, 4.19, 4.43, 5.5, 5.51, 5.93, 6.71, 7.05, 8.08, 9.68
Cyclades: 3.12, 3.62, 3.77, 3.98, 4.93, 5.36, 5.53, 5.64, 9.34, 9.36
Dodecanese: 3.97, 4.59, 4.5, 4.75, 5.03, 5.1, 5.2, 5.57, 5.77, 6.08, 6.2, 6.44, 6.93, 7.15, 7.18
Crete: 4, 5.07, 5.11, 6.29, 6.87, 8.35
Kefalonia: 2.46, 6.85, 7.76
Laconia: 9.22
Peloponnese: 5.47, 10.12, 11.34
Other Mainland: 8.28, 8.53, 8.88, 9.62, 9.81, 9.82, 10.06, 10.87, 11.36, 11.93, 12.8, 13.01

Ionian Islands

Ionian islands have Italian input, but the south Aegean is more like Sicily.

Ionian islands, Kythira.
Or South Aegean Cyclades.

In my experience it depends on the individual but it is probably eastern Crete. Western Crete has some "northern" type admixture making them more like the Cyclades.

Ionian islands are too genetically north to be Sicilian. I don't know why people think this. Is it because they have known Italian influence? That was Venetian, not southern Italian.

Do you think the very high levels of J2 in Crete, matches up to Sicilian levels of J2?

I'm not going by haplogroups but autosomal DNA.

Why do you think the Ionian islands are similar to Sicily? They are more similar to Peloponnesians (Ionians are).

It seems that Cyclades are way closer to Peloponnese than Dodecanese or Eastern Crete. I would say Dodecanese Islands are closest to Western Siciliy. Maybe Cyclades/West Crete/Maniots are farily close to Eastern Siciliy and then the rest of the Peloponnese to Abruzzo, Apulia, Marche (on a cline).

Kythira was the only Ionian island that I was referring to.

Kythera isn't an Ionian island. Ionian islands are Zakynthos, Corfu, and Kefalonia. :)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ionian_Islands
It's my understanding that Kythera is considered one of the Heptanese, i.e. "the Seven Islands."

"The Ionian Islands (Modern Greek: Ιόνια νησιά, Ionia nisia; Ancient Greek, Katharevousa: Ἰόνιοι Νῆσοι, Ionioi Nēsoi; Italian: Isole Ionie) are a group of islands in Greece. They are traditionally called the Heptanese, i.e. "the Seven Islands" (Greek: Ἑπτάνησα, Heptanēsa or Ἑπτάνησος, Heptanēsos; Italian: Eptaneso), but the group includes many smaller islands as well as the seven principal ones."

"The seven islands are; from north to south:

Kerkyra (Κέρκυρα) usually known as Corfu in English and Corfù in Italian
Paxi (Παξοί) also known as Paxos in English
Lefkada (Λευκάδα) also known as Lefkas in English
Ithaki (Ιθάκη) usually known as Ithaca in English
Kefalonia (Κεφαλλονιά) often known as Kefalonia, Cephalonia and Kefallinia in English
Zakynthos (Ζάκυνθος) sometimes known as Zante in English and Italian
Kythira (Κύθηρα) usually known as Cythera in English and sometimes known as Cerigo in English and Italian"

Hmm. Interesting. Genetically though, Kythera is different... they have some Phoenician input which the other Greek islands do not have.

Look at the close proximity of Kythera to Ashkenazim.

In my experience all of the islands south of Chios down to Rhodes are similar to one another and to most Sicilians. There seems to be no real pattern of which Sicilian group is closest. Euboea and Samos differ. Examples:

Dodecanese I think. Next would probably be the Ionian Islands, followed by the Cyclades, and then Crete. What are the genetic differences between Dodecanese Islanders and Sicilians?

What are the genetic differences between Dodecanese Islanders and Sicilians?

When there is actually a difference, Dodecanese are about 5% more Caucasian. Basically, what Sicilians have in North African, Dodecanese lack and make up the difference in Caucasian. That is really the only difference.

But some Sicilians do have Dodecanese levels of Caucasian AND have North African. So it really depends.

It's interesting how many people have mentioned ionian islands, something that I, as a (half) ionian islander don't confirm either in terms of results, or racial types

Ionian islands are racially like peloponnese/central Greece and cyclades plotting south-west among Greek people and I don't think there is any Italian input

@ak-47 kythera was politically eptanesian, but has nothing to do with ionian sea, it's an Aegean island

Look at the close proximity of Kythera to Ashkenazim.

This plot is somewhat outdated as it's based on very few samples.
