The December 6 anniversary was marked a day prior at the university's assembly hall with speeches from important cultural representatives.

At the meeting, Estonian Minister of Culture Laine Jänes proposed to establish a Finnish cultural center in Estonia, perhaps in Tartu, modeled after the Estonian Houses located internationally, including the freshly opened one in Helsinki.

The keynote speaker was Finnish professor Seppo Zetterberg of Jyväskylä University , a historian and author of several publications on Estonian history.

The Republic of Finland celebrates its Independence Day on December 6, when its parliament declared the country independent from Bolshevist Russia in 1917.
