Sadly, I was in Switzerland for three days and I left the visit to the Giger museum for the last day before my departure. Then I discovered it was closed on Mondays. :( What a pity...

Why is it that all Museums are closed on Mondays? I went to Bilbao and the Guggenheim was closed there.:(

I guess it's to compensate for the fact that museums usually are open on Sundays, unlike most other places. Museum workers need a day off, too.

Since being a younger teenager I have loved H.R. Giger.

Carcass got me into his artwork initially, but the Alien films simply compounded my love and admiration.

Me and my mates would always discuss whether Giger really hated women and his artwork reflected that, or he simply loved portraying women in manic death throes and sadistic poses.


'The Birth Machine', is my favourite, and is the only piece of his that I actually bother to keep saved on my PC.

I would call it the latter. That doesn't mean that some forms of 'lower' art aren't enjoyable as well. Same as black metal, punk, vampire films and all that ;)

In my opinion, Giger's work perfectly represents those forms of Low art that attempt (somewhat successfully) to reach beyond themselves and at the same time indicate a kind of cultural death rattle. I find Giger's work to be beautiful in the same disturbing way that Godspeed You! Black Emperor's music is, or Lovecraft's fiction is. Neither are indicative of a healthy cultural spirit, but, then again, death can be beautiful to, no?

I know of no aesthete that considers Giger a "Fine Artist". There is a comic book-ish quality to his work that, while enjoyable, isn't representative of High Aesthetics. I do like a lot of his stuff, though - especially the more raw and sexually oriented pieces. However, when contemplating his work, it's very one-dimensional (for me), overall.

How is it possible that Giger has world-wide fame (I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it), but Beksiński, who is at the very least as good, is virtually unknown?

I was afraid of derailing the thread as well because I have a tendency of doing that - but I couldn't resist. Beksiński art evokes a similar response from me; I guess it has a similiar atmosphere to Giger. I've wondered how he could have remained so unknown as well; if not achieving some kind of fame then surely achieving some kind of infamy for the work?

And yes, your avatar did seem familiar to me now that you mention it.

I'm sure this Beksińskiif given that opportunity would have been just as well known.

I'd never heard of the guy, but having looked at some of his work, I am bowled over! Absolutely fantastic!
