This is a tough one. Can't decide between London, Paris, Rome and Stockholm. Amsterdam is nice too, and Copenhagen.

London is definitely the odd-one-out of these; architecturally it's a mish-mash compared to the others, mainly because it was bombed so heavily during WWII. I've come to realise that London is probably the most interesting of the lot.

London can only be loved. Big Ben & Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, St Paul's cathedral, National Gallery, Greenwich, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace, Kew Gardens ... too many things to mention.

Athens.

Well, it could be also Neaples... Nea polis (the New City) has Greek roots.
But Neapolitans are more professional.

Tresh is a lifestyle. When you are able to do this without remorse you are an uebermensch beyond the Good and the Evil.

Anyway, in my opinion Rome and Paris.

Will I be thought a terrible chauvinist if I voted for my own hometown?

http://hotels.eleganttravel.no/uploads/hotels/image/Helsinki.jpg

I'm not a native but I love it here, and unless this becomes New Mogadishu, I intend to stay put.

I also put in votes for Edinburgh and Budapest. Lovely cities both.

Tallinn, with its unique old town. Which is one of the most preserved in entire Europe.

If I would be rich enough, then I would buy a small apartment for myself in one of those ancient buildings built in the 14th century.

However, in all sincerity, of all the European cities I've seen, I still think Prague is the most beautiful, with a few others coming close.

I voted Lisbon, but that's just the nicest out of the cities I've actually been to.

Torshavn, Faroe Islands is nice too, but it's more the nature than the architecture that makes it beautiful.

Edinburgh, Stockholm, Prague and Tallinn. Not just after Karl's photos, I've really held Tallinn as the most beautiful capital of Northern Europe for a long time. Fond memories of when I first had access to photo galleries of cities in internet, I imagined how would be life in that little colorful medieval place when I found it.

The question is about which capital looks best, which is different from which is liveliest, so that means Paris rather than London. I also checked Lisbon which has a spectacular setting with a castle on a hill overlooking a harbor filled with colorful fishing boats; Prague which speaks for itself and is much more beautiful than Budapest, Vienna, or Berlin; Stockholm with its archipelago of baroque-studded islands.

I will have to add Tallinn to some future itinerary; it looks promising.

Prague which speaks for itself and is much more beautiful than Budapest, Vienna, or Berlin;

Wasn't Prague a German city before World War One? I know it was once the capital of the H.R.E during the middle ages.

Wasn't Prague a German city before World War One? I know it was once the capital of the H.R.E during the middle ages.

Its most spectacular monuments date from its stints as the capital of the HRE (Charles IV) and later of the Hapsburg empire (Rudolph II). The Austrians continued to fix it up after they moved to Vienna. I believe it was Maria Theresa who had the cathedral made over.

Prague had a mixed German and Slavic population. There were still a few stray German street signs in the early 1990s which were gone by the time of my last visit a couple of years ago. I was taken to the site of an old German graveyard. It was completely obliterated except for one crucifix from a gravestone that had been captured and enveloped by an old tree.

Indeed !!

Where is Amsterdam on that list? - it cannot be chosen -
So my second choice is Rome - is one big open-air museum - it is simply the second best -

I didn't like Berlin and Brussels.

Lubljana is the best all around, taking in the city as a whole, in my opinion. The whole city is very clean, very nice looking, and lacking the 'bad' areas of many European capitals, as well as generally lacking in graffiti.

Best center city is Vienna I think, with honorable mentions to, in this order: London, Rome, Prague, Paris, Berlin, and Krakow (medieval capital of Poland).

The only Europeans capitals I been to is Bucharest & Chisinau. Bucharest is absolutely boring & kind of like a eastern European version of Rome, but Chisinau is quite nice, it's very green & lots of big parks.

I voted Edinburgh, although I would have voted Barcelona and Seville if they were in the list. Its rather odd that the capitals of the two biggest autonomous regions of Spain aren´t featured in a list where Edinburgh is. If Edinburgh wasn´t there, this would be a state capitals list and would make sense.... but hey... later you complain that Spaniards get mad and write rants
