New Irish GEDmatch results on MDLP K23.. very little difference to the English anywhere in Ireland.

I have long been trying to dispute the notion that English are substantially different genetically than the Irish. They are not. People have tried claiming English have substantial influence from Germany and Scandinavia and the Irish do not.

Even if this is true, which I doubt considering the Irish themselves have some, though less, RECENT continental input from Normans, Vikings and indirectly through Brits themselves both English and Scottish, the Irish still descend from a similar founding population to all of these -- they are very close to Frisians, Dutch, Germans, Swedes and yes, almost indistinguishable genetically from the English. Even in western Ireland where people claim there should be a difference -- ignoring that western Ireland received substantial Norman influence.

The only difference I notice is some people on the southeast coast shift toward Scandinavia, people in most of the east and south toward Cornwall otherwise, and western Ireland toward Dutch/Frisians/SE England.

I actually see it even in some western Irish results and there, it is going to be due to Anglo-Normans.

My feeling is the part of Ireland that will be most distinct (though still close to the Brits) is the Catholic areas of Ulster. Ulster was once the most 'Irish' part of Ireland in that before colonization, they had no Norman influence nor Vikings.

People on here often discuss Irish as being "Celtic" and the English as being displaced Germanic peoples, whereas it is only southeast England with a substantial continental presence and the Irish above are close even to them. There is also known British ancestry in much of Ireland, whether from Anglo-Normans (which impacted the west and southeast most) and direct English settlement in Dublin.

You figure more of an exception, rather than the norm? I always thought of Munster as a part only very minimally touched by Germanics. Plus many from there have an almost Iberian look them.

There is PART of Munster that is almost untouched by foreign influence but I am unsure where. You see this on a PCA plot I have posted where two Irish clusters -- one of two Munster clusters and the Catholic Ulster cluster -- are pulled further away from the British cluster. Even Connacht shows a shift toward England and Scotland relative to these, which I attribute to Anglo-Normans. The other Munster cluster, likely Cork, is also British shifted by comparison.

Waterford and Cork were influenced by English, Normans, and Vikings. Clare has remained almost purely Irish.

Anyhoot, I'm not sure how many academically are disputing the closeness of the English and the Irish. Wouldn't the bigger part of the sameness though be due in part to ancient Atlantic populations (Not Basque but Basque-like)?

Of course, you still get anthro-bros tyring to talk up the Anglos and Saxons and Vikings, but that's to be expected.

They all cluster with Northwest Euros though and not close to Basque. The Basque thing has been shown to be incorrect years ago. The reason is that all those populations come from a similar source and that is Rheinish Bell Beakers. That is the cause of the similarity between all these Northwest Euro populations.

People on here often discuss Irish as being "Celtic" and the English as being displaced Germanic peoples, whereas it is only southeast England with a substantial continental presence and the Irish above are close even to them. There is also known British ancestry in much of Ireland, whether from Anglo-Normans (which impacted the west and southeast most) and direct English settlement in Dublin.

The Bell Beakers didn't build the megaliths. Those were built by neolithic people. The Bell Beakers only arrived in Ireland/UK approx 4,500 years ago. There is very little genetic differences between all Northwest Europeans. They are all most likely a mix of Bell Beaker and Corded Ware.

You are a little bit darker than the average and not that you don't fit. I don't think you look Spanish like some others here have suggested. You have overwhelmingly Northwest Euro genetics though and whatever someone's colouring whether they are dark or blond they cluster with their fellow countrymen. I don't agree with anthropological classifications anyway. They don't show people's origins at all and are very subjective.

Norman and any Viking influence should really be more in the East. Anyway let's see what the Irish DNA Atlas says whenever it releases its results. It should be interesting to see where that Norwegian cluster is (or what that means). It's difficult with only these little bits of info coming out.

You are a little bit darker than the average and not that you don't fit. I don't think you look Spanish like some others here have suggested. You have overwhelmingly Northwest Euro genetics though and whatever someone's colouring whether they are dark or blond they cluster with their fellow countrymen. I don't agree with anthropological classifications anyway. They don't show people's origins at all and are very subjective.

It maybe be true that I am darker than average but there are still Irishman that are significantly darker than myself like Colin Farrell and Sean Hannity etc.. but I agree with you about underlying genetics being more important than phenotype :

It maybe be true that I am darker than average but there are still Irishman that are significantly darker than myself like Colin Farrell and Sean Hannity etc.. but I agree with you about underlying genetics being more important than phenotype :

If the former two are dark Southern Irish types than I can see how I could be a dark Ulster Irish type as I am somewhat lighter IMO.

You just look more French to me but that is just my opinion. Sean Hannity looks very Irish. It's the features. Anyway someone like Colin Farrell would genetically be just like any other Irish person.
