I looked at the Eurogenes k=36 results for 40 Ashkenazi Jews with no recent non-Jewish ancestry (verified with Jtest). To give a simple picture of Ashkenazi ancestry, I made 5 major components out of the 36 components. The first component, Middle Eastern, was composed of the Middle Eastern (e.g. Arabian, Middle Eastern, etc) and the Caucasus-related components. The second, the Mediterranean component, was composed of Italian, West Med and East Balkan. Another component was composed of Iberian and Basque. The fourth was called North/Eastern European and it was the sum of Central European, East Central Euro, Eastern Euro, Fennoscandian, French, North Atlantic, North Sea and Volga Ural. The final component, Other, was all Asian and African components. Middle Eastern ancestry in Ashkenazi Jews varies quite a bit but not too much. The Ashkenazi individual with the most Middle Eastern ancestry has 60.04% Mideast ancestry and 39.51% European ancestry. The Ashkenazi individual with the least Middle Eastern ancestry has 44.18% Mideast ancestry and 54.53% European ancestry. The Northern/Eastern European ancestry in the sample of Ashkenazi Jews is often extremely different across individuals even when their total European ancestry is roughly the same. As an example, the individual with the least Northern/Eastern European ancestry has the breakdown of 52.25% Mideast, 27.36% Mediterranean, 16.4% Iberian and Basque and 3.97% Northern/Eastern European. The individual with the most Northern/European ancestry has 48.97% Mideast ancestry, 21.09% Mediterranean ancestry, 8.56% Iberian and Basque ancestry and 20.36% Northern/Eastern European. Both have about 50% European ancestry but the composition of their European ancestry is quite different. The Mediterranean component varies quite a bit as well, but the minimum Mediterranean ancestry among the samples is quite high, 16.7%. The highest Mediterranean ancestry in an Ashkenazi sample was 31.42%. It seems that some Ashkenazi Jews lost quite a bit their original Arabian ancestry, as many of the samples only have 3-5% Arabian, whereas a few samples have 8-9% Arabian, and one Ashkenazi individual is 11.23% Arabian. Based on the limited sample it seems that it is better to assess Ashkenazi individuals individually, because while the overall average is 50.69% Mideast, 23.57% Mediterranean, 11.661% Iberian, 12.96% Northern/Eastern European and 0.72% Other, the ancestry in an Ashkenazi individual can be very different from this average. What are your thoughts on the results?

I am part Ashkenazi and part Eastern Sephardic with a smidgen of non Jewish Euro; my results plot like this using your rubric:

57.63% MENA
15.7% Mediterranean
15.07% North/East Euro.
11.2% Iberian/Basque
0.4% Other

That is actually quite similar to one of the Ashkenazi samples who is 55.96% MENA, 16.73% Mediterranean, 14.2% Iberian and Basque, 12.58% Northern/Eastern European and 0.43% Other.

I have updated the figure to separate West Asian/Caucasus ancestry in Ashkenazi Jews from their other Middle Eastern ancestry. For comparison purposes I added Samaritans, Arabs and Eastern European non-Jews.

A little bit off topic. What does it mean 6% Ashkenazi on the Jtest? Thanks and sorry for the off topic!

There are probably others who can better address your question, but just to give you an idea, most of the full Ashkenazis were around 27-30% on Jtest, with some as low as 25, and some as high as 33. Doing the Oracle might help you get a better answer.

Overall they roughly have the same amount of Mideast ancestry, but the Northern/Eastern Euro varies significantly, with some as low as 3-4% and some as high as 20%.
