I was in Greece and made the tour of classic Greece and fell in love with this country. The place I liked more was Olimpia.

I always liked the Temple of Athena Nike; it's just nestled up there on the Acropolis...so small, neat, and compact.

I am not sure about it. There were towns here in Northern Europe that were immense during the Middle Ages. Like Cologne which seems to have had some 50.000 people and the cities of Andalusian Spain. Granada seems to have had over 100.000 during the Middle Ages. Amsterdam had 200.000 during the early 18th century.

The Pnyx with the carved steps of the speaker's platform in the centre.

The Pnyx is a small, rocky hill surrounded by parkland, with a large flat platform of eroded stone set into its side, and by steps carved on its slope. It was the meeting place of the world's first democratic legislature, the Athenian ekklesia (assembly), and the flat stone platform was the bema, the "stepping stone" or speakers' platform. As such, the Pnyx is the material embodiment of the principle of isēgoria (Greek: ἰσηγορία), "equal speech", i.e. the equal right of every citizen to debate matters of policy. The other two principles of democracy were isonomia (Greek: ἰσονομία), equality under the law, and isopoliteia (Greek: ἰσοπολιτεία), equality of vote and equal opportunity to assume political office. The right of isēgoria was expressed by the presiding officer of the Pnyx assembly, who formally opened each debate with the open invitation "Tis agoreyein bouletai?" (Greek: "Τίς ἀγορεύειν βούλεται;", "Who wishes to speak?").

The Pnyx was used for popular assemblies in Athens as early as 507 BC, when the reforms of Cleisthenes transferred political power to the citizenry. It was then outside the city proper, but close enough to be convenient. It looks down on the ancient Agora, which was the commercial and social centre of the city

Linking all the islands of Greece together is no small job. While Greece may have a great number of airport the Greeks are natural navigators of the high seas with a tradition leading back several millennia. In a lot of cases the ferry is still in common use. One of the numerous ferries is the Sofoklis Venizelos docked off in Piraeus.

I have been trying to source pictures of the interior of this remarkable museum, one of the most elegant that I have seen.

It was the former provisional palace of Otto I and Amalia, and is literally 18th Century Greek revival.

Lots of trompe l'oeil, perfect symmetry... any pics please add:

Here is a virtual tour - the juicy interiors can be viewed here:

http://www.athenscitymuseum.gr/tour/tourEN/tourVE-k7-f1.htm

Note the lack of plasterwork, with painted detailing in its place, along the axis of each wall. Very smart.

Lovely, but there seem to be no sizeable jpgs to be found anywhere.

You would love my current workplace then: it's the tower built for Amalia in the western suburbs of Athens. Her stables are also well preserved, still keeping horses :)

A brief history of the Athenian Acropolis from 3500 BCE to 2010 AD, through 3d reconstructions. Many of the dates shown are always open to debate. The same happens with some buildings and especially those of the Pre-Classical Acropolis which we cannot be sure where and when they were built or whether they existed at all.

Olynthus was abruptly destroyed in 348BC by Phillip of Macedon after allying with Athens. To some extent this is true, the houses are relatively undisturbed and provide a relatively unique look at the life of Ancient Greece before Hellenism swept through and marked the very end of the Classical age. This model is the House of the Tiled Prothyon, a broadly higher class home (or Oikoi) of Olynthus, yet shows the same mix the public and private affairs of the family. Using finds reports and other comparable sites from Attica this model should bring this site to life. This model has been a part of a dissertation on the 'Concepts of Religious Spaces in Athens' and their close connection to the rest of Athenian society. A full explanation for the comparisons between Athens and Olynthus can be found here (https://www.academia.edu/s/5609ac39b4... The film presents Greece's history and contribution to Western defense and the Atlantic Community, focusing on the post-war reconstruction effort and the fight against Communism and linking them to the political and cultural heritage of Ancient Greek civilization. The film presents Greece's history and contribution to the Atlantic Community. "Introducing Greece" is part of a series originally designed as "Know your Allies", and finally titled "the Atlantic Community Series". Its objectives were to familiarize public opinion in each of the member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasize the national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and allied defense in the framework of NATO. The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV. Language versions were made and distributed with the help of the national governments. “My country and NATO” tells the story of each one of NATO’s members, using a selection of unique archival materials to take you back in time. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Discover the untold stories of NATO. from its birth onwards on: http:///NATOdeclassified (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?v=0Lo-GZSrF40&redir_token=qGidUcxmpQXutYG-CUqYSsWXIK18MTU3Mzg2MTQ0NkAxNTczNzc1MDQ2&event=video_description&q=http%3A%2F%2F%2FNATOdeclassified)

Meanwhile rail transport in Greece is changing as well:

2018: (https://greece.greekreporter.com/2018/08/21/trainoses-new-high-speed-train-makes-athens-thessaloniki-trip-under-3-5-hours/)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucfS2ByS0xs

With TrainOSE now being a member of the FSI group, high-speed emu ETR 485-031 travelled from Italy to Greece to perform a number of test runs, followed by its official presentation at the beginning of the 83rd Thessaloniki International Fair, including a special service between Thessaloniki and Katerini, during which the maximum speed of 213 km/h was achieved. Its arrival, test runs and presentation special train can be seen in this video. As the Exhibition ends, the emu will return to Italy. However, according to Mr. Tsalidis, the C.E.O. of TrainOSE, within a few years, similar multiple units will take over high speed services throughout the Athens – Thessaloniki mainline.

The Olympias, a reconstruction of an Athenian trireme, the kind of boat that gave the Persians something to think about during the Battle of Salamis (480 BC). This boat was built between 1985 and 1987 and is now an officially commissioned warship in the Hellenic Navy. Of course, it's unlikely to see any form of action and its commission is purely ceremonial, however it is considered an important cultural asset, having undertaken various trips and sea trials (including carrying the Olympic Torch during the Olympic Games of 2004). Its trips proved to be a vital in proving ancient theories and descriptions (like those by Thucydides) right (even with an mixed and inexperienced crew).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcsrNrRkQis

The Olympias is a full-size replica of an ancient Greek Trireme warship, co-designed by John Coates, naval architect and historian and one of the founders of the modern BRLSI. This video shows Olympias undergoing sea trials in 1990. It was shot by Christopher Miles, and features a commentary written by John Coates and read by his son Julian. Edited for BRLSI by Paul Stephens. This video will be shown at a BRLSI lecture on Greek Triremes by Professor Boris Rankov (who appears in the video) on 11th October 2011. Visit www.brlsi.org (choose 'Poster Gallery') for more details.

A funny detail what I remember from my time in school was an ancient quote about the positions of the rowers which were subdivided in three layers or classes: the thranitai (who sat on the deck), the zygitai (who took up the middle position) and the thalamitai which sat below the zygitai. I remember that my history teacher once taught us, and don't laugh, that the position of the poor thalamitai arranged in such a way that the zygitai would "pas gas in the mouths of the group, the thalamitai, below them". This seems to have a genuine ancient description and I remember that it also appeared in the school book - however I can't remember who originally said it - as one can tell from the video - the description regarding the positions is also correct.

A film about the building of the Corinth Canal in Greece in the early 1950s. The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland, arguably making the peninsula an island.

The Jockey of Artemision is a large Hellenistic bronze statue of a young boy riding a horse, dated to around 150–140 BC. It is a rare surviving original bronze statue from Ancient Greece and a rare example in Greek sculpture of a racehorse. It may have been dedicated to the gods by a wealthy person to honour victories in horse races, probably in the single-horse race (Greek: κέλης). The artist is unknown. The statue was found in a shipwreck off Cape Artemision, in north Euboea, which was discovered in 1926. The statue was reassembled, after restoration of the horse's tail and body, and it went on display at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens in 1972. The Messenger by Savfk feat. The Doryphoros of Polykleitos (Greek Δορυφόρος: "Spear-Bearer") is one of the best known Greek sculptures of classical antiquity, depicting a solidly built, muscular, standing warrior, originally bearing a spear balanced on his left shoulder. Rendered somewhat above life-size, the lost bronze original of the work would have been cast circa 440 BC, but it is today known only from later (mainly Roman period) marble copies. The work nonetheless forms an important early example of both Classical Greek contrapposto and classical realism; as such, the iconic Doryphoros proved highly influential elsewhere in ancient art. The renowned Greek sculptor Polykleitos designed a sculptural work as a demonstration of his written treatise, entitled the "Kanon" (or Canon, translated as "measure" or "rule"), exemplifying what he considered to be the perfectly harmonious and balanced proportions of the human body in the sculpted form.

Sometime in the 2nd century AD, the Greek medical writer Galen wrote about the Doryphoros as the perfect visual expression of the Greeks' search for harmony and beauty, which is rendered in the perfectly proportioned sculpted male nude: Chrysippos holds beauty to consist not in the commensurability or "symmetria" [ie proportions] of the constituent elements [of the body], but in the commensurability of the parts, such as that of finger to finger, and of all the fingers to the palm and wrist, and of those to the forearm, and of the forearm to the upper arm, and in fact, of everything to everything else, just as it is written in the Canon of Polyclitus. For having taught us in that work all the proportions of the body, Polyclitus supported his treatise with a work: he made a statue according to the tenets of his treatise, and called the statue, like the work, the 'Canon'.' (wikipedia) Polykleitos is known as the best sculptor of men, with the primary subjects of his works being male athletes with idealized body proportions. He was interested in the mathematical proportions of the human form, which led him to write an essay the Kanon, on the proportions of humans. The Doryphoros is an illustration of his writings in Kanon on the symmetria between the body parts.

Polykleitos achieved a balance between muscular tensions and relaxation due to the chiastic principle that he relied on. "Scholars agree that Polykleitos based his calculations on a single module, perhaps the terminal section of the little finger, to determine the corresponding measurements of each body part" (MIA Doryphoros Plaque).

The Doryphoros is a marble copy from Pompeii that dates from 120–50 BC. The original was made out of bronze in about 440 BC, but is now lost (along with every other bronze sculpture made by a known Greek artist). Neither the original statue nor the treatise have yet been found; it is widely considered that they have not survived from antiquity. Fortunately, several Roman copies in marble—of varying quality and completeness—do survive to convey the essential form of Polykleitos' work. Perhaps the best known copy of the Doryphoros was excavated in Pompeii and now resides in the Naples, National Archaeological Museum. The Poseidon of Melos is a statue of Poseidon in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens (NAMA), with the inventory number 235, which is dated to the last quarter of the second century BC. It is believed to be dated back to the Hellenistic Period. The statue was found in 1877 on the island of Melos. It is made of Parian marble and has a height of 2.35 metres, which makes it more than lifesize. The sea god is depicted naked to the waist in an awe-inspiring pose, with his muscular right arm raised, probably in order to hold a trident (now lost). His himation hangs around his hips, covering his legs and genitals; he holds it in place at his side with his left hand.

His back is also partially covered; a bit of cloth lies, mysteriously suspended, on his left shoulder. His weight rests on his right leg, his left leg is left free. The musculature of his arms and his body generally are very finely worked. The head is slightly tilted to the left and his gaze is directed into the distance. There is a dolphin behind the statue to the right, which serves as an additional support for the weight of the statue. The pose is a standard one for Poseidon, Zeus and Hades. Poseidon (Greek: Ποσειδῶν) was one of the Twelve Olympians in ancient Greek religion and myth. He was god of the Sea and other waters; of earthquakes; and of horses. In pre-Olympian Bronze Age Greece, he was venerated as a chief deity at Pylos and Thebes. His Roman equivalent is Neptune. Poseidon was protector of seafarers, and of many Hellenic cities and colonies. In Homer's Iliad, Poseidon supports the Greeks against the Trojans during the Trojan War. In the Odyssey, during the sea-voyage from Troy back home to Ithaca, the Greek hero Odysseus provokes Poseidon's fury by blinding his son the Cyclops Polyphemus, resulting in Poseidon punishing him with storms, the complete loss of his ship and companions, and a ten-year delay. Poseidon is also the subject of a Homeric hymn. In Plato's Timaeus and Critias, the island of Atlantis was Poseidon's domain. The End of the World - Savfk

Marble statue of a wounded warrior. Roman Antonine period ca. A.D. 138–181. Copy of a Greek bronze statue of ca. 460–450 B.C. Metropolitan Museum of Art. The subject of this statue has not been identified with certainty. The warrior held a shield on his left arm and probably a spear in his right hand, and he stands with his feet carefully placed on a sloping surface. The figure must have some association with the sea because a planklike form surrounded by waves is carved on the plinth of a second copy in the British Museum, London. It has been suggested that he is the Greek hero Protesilaos, who ignored an oracle's warning that the first Greek to step on Trojan soil would be the first to die in battle. This statue might represent him descending from the ship ready to meet his fate. In Greek mythology, Protesilaus (Ancient Greek: Πρωτεσίλᾱος, Prōtesilāos) was a hero in the Iliad who was venerated at cult sites in Thessaly and Thrace. Protesilaus was the son of Iphiclus, a "lord of many sheep"; as grandson of the eponymous Phylacos, he was the leader of the Phylaceans. Hyginus surmised that he was originally known as Iolaus—not to be confused with Iolaus, the nephew of Heracles—but was referred to as "Protesilaus" after being the first (πρῶτος, protos) to leap ashore at Troy, and thus the first to die in the war.

In 1984 when Kostas Zouvelos and his fiancé saw a for sale sign on a crumbling early 19th-century fortified tower on Greece’s Mani Peninsula, they decided to buy it and choose later what to do with it. Fortified towers are ubiquitous across Mani (Peloponnese) where a history of small - often just several family- settlements, or “xemonia” were built at key locations for self defense. The Maniots were never under Ottoman occupation like the rest of the country and they helped Greece gain independence in 1832. After the war homes and towers were abandoned in large numbers as the inhabitants of the peninsula emigrated to Athens. Zouvelos and his wife Kassiani Theodorakakou spent eight years converting their collapsing tower into a three-room guest house. So intent on assuring that the building matched the environment, they changed the mortar color three times. To create the mortar, they used a traditional technique called kourasani, using lime, local soil, river sand, ceramic powder, and a small amount of cement. Working with the building’s original footprint of 25 square meters per floor, the couple squeezed a kitchen/lobby on one and three bedrooms on the others, using space-saving features like an in-room shower, a carved-in-the-rock bed and a portable kitchen. They also created extra living spaces outdoors with a sun terrace, an infinity pool and a large patio with replanted 100-year-old olive trees. https://tainaron-blue.com/ (https://www.youtube.com/redirect?q=https%3A%2F%2Ftainaron-blue.com%2F&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbnZTSVlsTEdmZUxSdngxYjJTUjNaaE lPSEVmQXxBQ3Jtc0ttRHk4MUxmZDczMVNleDM5amlEblVCNWtB M2pXZzZGaUcydGNOWFd4RzM4NVJ3aVBBa2t5OVFKYzNvaFBYcm dtdHotWnRhbzR2cGoza0RSdGxMcS1HUzR0RXpJUHczRGRZbkQx ZG4xby1GUVZYUFhfSQ%3D%3D&v=A6S82xVitTw&event=video_description)

After enjoying Greece's charming old port town of Nafplio, we'll time-trip through the ruins of Olympia, take center stage at the remarkably preserved theater at Epidavros, and explore the ancient capital of Mycenae. Then we'll wander off the beaten path along the rustic, rough-and-tumble Mani Peninsula, relax in the idyllic beach town of Kardamyli, and marvel at Greece's Rock of Gibraltar: the fortress town of Monemvasia.

Intrigue has always been a part of both diplomacy and war. In ancient Greece, one enterprising politician and general took the art of switching sides to the extreme. The History Guy remembers Alcibiades, a general who had an out sized effect on the Peloponnesian war.

3D reconstruction of Classical Athens in the late 5th century BC. The city is presented the way it would look in the years before the defeat in the Peloponnesian War (404 BC).
The city of Athens was completely destroyed by the Persian army in the years 480-479 BC. In the years that followed, the Athenians managed to rebuild their city and by the middle of the 5th century BC, the statesman and general Pericles ordered an extensive construction programme that made Athens the centre of classical Greece. It was the time when the great temples on the Acropolis hill were built (Parthenon, Erechtheion) and many buildings of public administration for the Athenian Democracy.

The video presents almost all of the important monuments, spaces and areas within the city. The 3d reconstructions were made after the most recently published international research and a great effort was made to be as accurate as possible. Of course simplifications and artistic license are present in order to technically manage a big project as this one.

The Stoa of Attalus, in the ancient Agora of Athens, was a donation by the King of Pergamon, Attalus II (159 BCE – 138 BCE) to the city of Athens. It was two-storied, of Doric order, and was 115 metres long. It had 42 rooms that were used as shops. In north and south ends, staircases led to the second floor.
The Stoa was destroyed by the invasion of the Heruli in 267 AD. It was completely restored between 1953-1956 by the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, in order to house the Museum of the Ancient Agora.

The Middle Stoa was constructed in around 180 BCE. It could be possible that it was a gift to the city by the king of Pontus Pharnaces I. It was the biggest building of the Agora of Athens, measuring 147 metres long and 17.5 m. wide.

The Parthenon is an ancient Greek temple built on the Acropolis hill of Athens, Greece.
It is a temple made of white Pentelic marble and was dedicated to goddess Athena, the patroness of the city of Athens.
The construction began in 447 BC after the orders of the Athenian statesman Pericles. The architects were Iktinos and Callicrates, while the supervisor of the sculpture decoration was Phidias. The construction was completed in 438 BC and the last sculptures were placed in 432 BC.

It is a building of doric architecture, combining features of the Ionic order too. The sculptures can be divided in three types: the metopes, the pediments and the frieze.
Most of the Parthenon sculptures were taken in 1801-1812 by Lord Elgin and are now in the British Museum while most of the rest are in the Acropolis Museum.

The entrance to the main temple was from the east main door. Inside stood the gigantic statue of goddess Athena Parthenos (Virgin). The statue made by Phidias was created in gold and ivory and stood around 12 metres high.

The Parthenon is considered to be a symbol of ancient Greece, democracy and western civilization.

The watermarks on the images may (rightfully) annoy many viewers. They were not present from the beginnings of our website, but were added as a result of extended unauthorized use, alteration and expropriation of the material.

3D reconstruction of the public latrines of ancient Athens.
The public latrines were located near the Roman Agora of Athens. They were built in the 1st century AD and are also called "Vespasianae" after the Roman Emperor Vespasian, who built many similar buildings all over the empire. Their usage was often made on a small fee.

Beneath the slopes of the Acropolis of Athens, is what has been described as the most well preserved monument in Ancient Greece. The Tower of the Winds was an ancient clock tower with working sundials precisely carved into each of its 8 sides, and is sometimes known as the big Ben of the Ancient world. Above the sundials, it is adorned with finely crafted representations of the 8 gods of the wind, and the tower once displayed the direction of the wind. Even with all this on the outside of the tower, what was most impressive may have been what was inside. We will explore the theories around this advanced mechanism which was powered by water.

In this video, we take a look from above at the beauty that the Greek island of Kos has to offer. Clear, turquoise waters and endless beaches. Plus, we get spoilt with historic ruins and picturesque landscapes.

Kos is a popular Greek holiday island in the southeast of the Aegean Sea. It is located in the middle of the Dodecanese and is surrounded by the islands of Kalymnos, Pserimos, and Nisyros island. It is the third-largest Dodecanese island, after Rhodes Island and Karpathos Island. Kos is not a big island, it has an area of 295 square kilometres, and the coastline is about 110 km long. The island has a rich history, with many historical monuments of remarkable archaeological as well as tourist interest.

Athens is both the capital and the largest city of Greece. With its urban area's population numbering over three million, it is also the eighth largest urban area in the European Union.

Athens is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years. The city was named after the Greek goddess of war. It is widely referred to as the cradle of Western civilization and the birthplace of democracy.

From 900 BCE onwards Athens was one of the main centres of trade and prosperity in the region. The leading position of Athens resulted from its central location in the Greek world, its secure stronghold on the Acropolis and its access to the sea, which gave it a natural advantage over it's rivals. Athens, together with Sparta, led a coalition of Greek states that repelled the Persians. The decades that followed became known as the Golden Age of Athenian democracy, during which time Athens became the leading city of Ancient Greece, with its cultural achievements laying the foundations for Western civilization.

By the end of Late Antiquity, Athens had declined due to attacks by migrating peoples. It was relatively prosperous during the Byzantine era and the Crusades, benefiting from Italian trade. In 1458 it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire and entered a long period of decline.

Following the Greek War of Independence, Athens was chosen as the capital of the newly independent Greek state. In modern times, Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis, central to economic, financial, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. The heritage of the Classical Era is still evident in the city, represented by ancient monuments and works of art, the most notable being the Parthenon.

Crete's mystery is extremely deep. Whoever sets foot on this island senses a mysterious force branching warmly and beneficiently through his veins, senses his soul begin to grow

- Nikos Kazantzakis, Report to Greco

Crete is ... Unique like you!
For the extraordinary Traveler, an extraordinary Journey awaits, Crete is a great deal more than just another greek island. It is true that much of the time especially in the four bigger towns or along the developed north coast, it doesn't feel like an island at all, but a substantial land in its own right

Crete – the southernmost island in Europe has “everything”! Its bountiful variety of features includes mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bar-boogie and nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and clean swimmable seas.

Bathed in clear sunlight much of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. The largest island in Greece, it is understandably a most popular travel and vacation destination.

Crete also has a magic radiance – truly! There is the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants and flowers that are unique to the island. Breath in the ever-present scents of wild herbs, taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses.

No other place in Greece can delight the senses of smell and taste like Crete. Fine cheeses, cold cuts, olive oils, herbs, honey, wine, raki ...
Crete is blessed by nature, fertile and wild. Everything grows here, with vegetables, rare greens, herbs, vines and olives as far as the eye can see.
Enjoy the delight of sipping a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village, the excitement and spillover of weddings and occasions, the history, the people and the world-sourced visitors. It is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise.

Crete has a people noted for and conspicuous in their hospitality and tradition of welcoming visitors. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local.

Because Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, it offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateaus that reward the discerning world traveller. Wondrous moments, those memorable combinations of time and place that provide you with enriching experiences, are yours - here - if you explore the island.
