View Full Version : So WTF is my ethnicity according to DNA ?

TEUTORIGOS
09-12-2017, 04:05 AM
My Y DNA can be found mostly in Ireland and Scotland and my mtDNA can be found all over Europe. My autosomal results say different things (BTW, user BritishKnight here says I am ethnically Scottish) :

AncestryDNA says I am 52% Irish, 37% British and 6% Scandinavian etc..

It also says with 60% confidence that I am 'Ulster Irish' via its genetic communities.

Myheritage.com says I am 40.1% English (which is similar to AncestryDNA's 37 % British/English/Anglo-Saxon), 35.7 % Scottish,Irish, Welsh, 24.2 % Scandinavian and 1.7% Central Asian which would be more of a Northern Scottish result.

Here are my Eurogenes K13, k15, k36 and Eutest results :

So are you saying I should ignore MyHeritage results and go with AncestryDNA ? Because they both say something different. They both say I am pretty much the same amount of British/Anglo-Saxon , more or less, but the Irish/Welsh/Scottish/Celtic and Scandinavian components are significantly different.

Well each company will have their own method of calculation of course, but the raw data is the same whether you upload them onto Gedmatch or Myheritage etc, so you might be able to see some sort of correlation/pattern when comparing Ancestry.com to MyHeritage.com results is all I'm trying to mention.

But IMO I actually would trust MyHeritage.com results more as Ancestry.com operates more as a "best-fit" breakdown similar to a Gedmatch Oracle which I believe provides a more broad approximation of ancestry. In my case Ancestry.com gave me incredibly wild results, while MyHeritage was incredibly accurate for me.

What's your known ancestry by paper/genealogy? ...It looks to me like you're half English + a quarter Scottish/Irish + a quarter Scandinavian & some trace Native American, but I'm not an expert on Euro genetics.

I know what you mean, now. The pattern I am starting to see (when using GEDmatch Eurogens, too) is more of a Scottish or Scottish+English one now (Scots and English can have scandinavian blood ). I am trying to keep an open mind ,though, so I might be Ulster Irish.

Yeah, AncestryDNA is owned by Mormon Americans and Myheritage.com is owned by Israeli Jews and Ashkenazi Jews are smarter than Mormons so that is part of the reason I want to go with Myheritage's results, as well.

Uh, my paper trail is Ulster Ireland (which could be Scottish, Scottish+English or Ulster Irish etc..), English, probably some Scottish, West German(ic) from Alsace-Lorraine France which seems to go into the Norman/Saxon English DNA because it was mixed with an 'Irish' grandfather before making into my autosomal DNA, and SouthEast Irish or SouthMiddleEast Irish.

Someone posted this on another forum :

The difference between Ulster Scots and the Native Irish isn't a very big difference to begin with, both are closer to the Irish than to the English, so it's not that it's been mixed out its that they were two incredibly similar populations to begin with and the test can't tell the difference

One woman on the Ancestry DNA forums a while ago wrote a post because she was confused that she basically got only "Ireland" and no British, and that she was Scottish. I asked her if her family was from western Scotland and she said that it was.

If your goal is to tease apart very similar populations like the Irish, Ulster Scots, and Highland Scots, Ancestry DNA can't do it, they'll all match with Ireland. Living DNA may be able to do it after the Ireland project is released, but that will be over a year from now I think.

I am not really sure and no one can be really sure of their paper trail. See my post exactly above this one. I have to wait more than a year for the possibility of finding out via genetic tests with POBI/LivingDNA plus the Irish Atlas project (LivingDNA will subsume it). The Irish Atlas project will be released in 3 days , though. Apparently the Ulster Irish and SouthWest Scottish are pretty much the same people, though, according to the Irish Atlas project.

I think you can call yourself "British", based on what you have shown so far. Use more GEDmatch calculators, and make a list with the top 5 or 10 reference populations for as many calculators as you can that are not ethnic-specific (like the ones designed to test Africans, otherwise you will get weird results like Egyptian as a placeholder for non SSA admix). Then take the list of all the 5 to 10 top populations, and make a statistical average of which ethnic group comes out at #1 the highest frequency #2, etc. You can then do this for each population, based on how high it is on your list, and how often it shows up. The higher up on the list, and the more it shows up, the greater you can feel about that being your "predominant ethnicity". You can then post for us the calculator results that give you that ethnicity, which you just deduced as most probable. Using just one company's oracle is not the best way to go about things, in my opinion. This is why GEDmatch is a superior service.

We are all mixed with various regions of the world. It is important to take your own personal culture into consideration.

Hope this was helpful.

No offense but I don't think you are interpreting the data correctly. If you look at the map Shazouzu posted and what Turul Karom said "We are all mixed with various regions of the world" then the point is I want to know what my closest ethnic analogue is in Europe. Obviously, it is either the Irish or British. The British themselves are mutts. For instance, an English person on AncestryDNA may show up as British, Irish, Western European, and small amounts of like 2% of Greek etc... the question is not whether I am mixed it is whether my mix is too much out of the ordinary for a British person which it is not since AncestryDNA's Western European category is German/French. Dude, it is not like I am some weird American mix that doesn't exist in Europe like Italian, Polish, Irish and Finnish or something .

Your Ancestry result is very similar to a lot of more English testers. You're obviously a mixture of Insular Celtic with some Germanic.

At least now you're aware of how close the Irish are to the British. I remember when you used to post those old dna articles about the Irish being Basque and the English Germanic. :) Your paper trail does match your dna fairly well. The Gedmatch calculators only show what populations you match using what admixture score you get. You can end up with any Northwest European population in your top results. I know my ancestry well but with Gedmatch I get varied Northwestern European countries like yourself. My most common no 1 is Orcadian even though I know all my ancestry in the last 200 years is Irish.

I think , on GEDmatch, Orcadian can be a proxy for Irish and South Dutch can be a proxy for West German. I think the Ulster Irish and the SouthWest Scottish are basically the same people more or less and I am not even just talking about the plantation but before that with the Kingdom of Dal Riata etc... it is going to take a while for a DNA test that will be able to tell me if I am Ulster Irish or SouthWest Scottish definitively but LivingDNA may be able to do that in a little over a year. Right now AncestryDNA can only tell me that I am 'Ulster Irish' with a 60% probability, in beta mode, which is not as good as something 90% , obviously. At this point I just have to be patient and wait for the LivingDNA commercial genetic testing company to advance to the point where it can tell me exactly what I am. You say my results are more similar to a lot of more English testers but mainland Scottish people are like halfway genetically between the native Irish/Welsh and the English/Germanics. Also, like I said, the difference between the Ulster Irish and the SouthWest Scottish is extremely minimal.

Yes I've done LivingDNA so quite familiar with it. The Scots are between the Irish and English and the English are between the Irish/Scots and the Welsh according to the Irish DNA project but as we know there will hopefully updates to this shortly.

Similarity between Ulster and Scotland can date back even to Dal Riata Kingdom.

Because Gaelic Scottish is a language which originated in Northern Ireland.

Later many Scots migrated to Ulster, but it can be considered a back-migration.

Sorry to be pedantic but Gaelic originated in Ireland. I've got quite strong Dal Riata connections. The name Scotland was actually named after the Roman name for the Irish e.g. Scoti. In Ireland the language is called Gaeilge or in English it is just called Irish, in Scotland it is called Gàidhlig. With Manx both Gaeilge and Gaidhlig developed from Middle Irish.

Some people say that populations like the Ulster Irish and Scottish are too close to distinguish with current commercial DNA tests. However, I read that unlike the rest of the U.K. and unlike Ireland : Scottish residents have the highest amount of Finnish/Northwest Russian (1.31% on average) heritage, which is explained by their geographic proximity.

AncestryDNA has me as :

52% Irish
37% British
6% Scandinavian
>1% Finnish

etc...

Which could be either a Scottish or Ulster Irish result but dna.land has me as 1.8% Finnish, Gencove has me as 2% NorthEastern European (one of the sample populations is Finnish), and Eurogenes K36 has my FennoScandian @9.68 so my Norse score could be like 6%-7% or whatnot and the rest of the Fennoscandian Finnish.

So , can I infer , based on this information, that I am indeed Scottish-American and not Irish-American ? Also, if this is the case then can this be the key to differentiating the populations rather than having to wait for the new Irish DNA project to be subsumed by LivingDNA ?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I did an nMonte calculation on all the relevant Eurogenes' calculators. Anyway, AncestryDNA only says I am 'Ulster Irish' with a 60% probability and the 'Scotch-Irish' category is subsumed by a wider Scottish genetic communities category and is different from 'Ulster Irish' supposedly. I think once LivingDNA subsumes an Irish DNA project I will have to test with them to get definitive answers. Anyway, for now, my nMonte results :

MDLP k23b is only good for a general overview it is not as microcosmic to Europeans as Eurogenes :

1 50% Irish_ +25% Irish_ +25% North_German_ @ 1.908688

this is very close because you're 75% British and 25% Alsace Lorraine French. French people from Alsace Lorraine either have lots of German dna or they're just Germans who speak French. British are genetically pretty close to the Irish too

Simply said; your ancestry is of mixed-European descent. British Isles mainly with a slight shift towards continental Germanics (i.e. Germans, Dutch, etc.).

Yeah, but the British have significant continental European Germanic admixture too it is called 'Europe West' on AncestryDNA.

sacré bleu ! Hey your chinese you are supposed to be smart so WTF is my ethnicity ? I am thinking that the science is not ready enough to differentiate between populations in the British Isles. It can tell you if you are something like very different like Italian or Finnish but not if you are like Irish or Scottish. What do you think ? This shit is like waste of time right ?

FRENCH

Racial Characteristics:

Sawed-off sissies who eat snails and slugs and cheese that smells like people's feet. They take
filthy pictures of each other with cheap cameras, wash nothing but their cunts, fight with their
feet, and perform sex acts with their faces. Utter cowards who force their own children to drink
wine, they gibber like baboons even when you try to speak to them in their own wimpy
language.

Good Points:

Invented the blowjob.

Proper Forms of Address:

Froggy, froggy-wog, frog-eater, French-lips, Franco fuck-face, clit-lick.
An Anecdote Illustrating Something of the French Character:

A Frenchman goes home with his best friend and they find the friend's wife laying naked on the
dining room table with her legs spread apart. The Frenchman takes a close look at her cunt and
says, "Zees looks like zee menstrual blood!" Then he bends down, takes a deep whiff, and says,

"Zees smells like zee menstrual blood!" Finally he gets down on his knees, eats her out for
about twenty minutes, and says, "Zees tastes like zee menstrual blood! Without a doubt, it eez
zee menstrual blood! Mon dieu, I am glad zat we did not fuck her! !"

You're American of mixed Isles ancestry, some Continental.

As for Scottish the "Orcadian" on gedmatch, like LivingDNA, is just traced ancestry - they weren't, to my knowledge, born in Orkney. One of the identifying factors of Scottish ancestry is "Finnish" DNA as Scots score the highest Finnish-like DNA in the UK. An American friend of mine with some Scottish ancestry, for example, gets 11% "Finnish" on DNALand and that Scottish ancestry is a number of generations removed.

This is an ethnic northern Scot, his ancestry is north of Inverness, for reference.

Regarding what you are it is possible, given the genetic overlap between populations, your familial claims [/paper trail] may shed more light on what your breakdown is than genetics.

I get 1.8% Finnish according to dna.land and the average amount of Finnish for Scots is 1.31%. Anyway, Scots are not one ethnic group so comparing myself to a Scot from Argyll-Bute or perhaps SouthWestern Scotland would make more sense than a Northern Scot.

Yeah, you don't have to go out of your way to get another Scottish sample from Argyll-Bute or SouthWestern Scotland but I bet the MyHeritage results less accurate than the AncestryDNA results.

You've said it before, in many ways, DNA just isn't at the stage where the accuracy isn't questionable.
