Remarkable details of the Christmas truces on the battlefields of the Western Front in 1914 have emerged in a previously unseen diary of a British Army captain.

The 48-hour local armistice they negotiated was, according to Capt Hamilton, the inspiration for truces up and down the trenches in which soldiers from both sides sang carols, played football and exchanged small presents of food, cigars and tunic buttons.

He (historian Dr. Thomas Weber) said: 'The suggestion is that after the first Christmas there was no repeat because of the circle of violence and its ensuing bitterness that then set in.

In fact, soldiers never tried to stop fraternising with their opponents during Christmas.

After the battle and after the adrenaline had gone, remorse tended to set in and there are many incidents recorded where soldiers tried to help injured soldiers from the other side.

This really puts the entire war into context. The majority of the men are just following orders and have no real political agendas of their own.

Am I the only one that thinks the tp brass should have taken this lackadaisical period as a prime opportunity to bring forth death upon the enemy and victory upon our own?
