View Full Version : Apricity members job status

It would be interesting to know the proffessional status of Apricity members!

I shall categorize jobs in

The term white-collar worker refers to a salaried professional or an educated worker who performs semi-professional office, administrative, and sales coordination tasks, as opposed to a blue-collar worker, whose job requires manual labor. "White-collar work" is an informal term, defined in contrast to "blue-collar work".

A blue-collar worker is a member of the working class who performs manual labor and earns an hourly wage. Blue-collar workers are distinguished from those in the service sector and from white-collar workers, whose jobs are not considered manual labor.

Blue-collar work may be skilled or unskilled, and may involve manufacturing, mining, building and construction trades, teaching, mechanical work, maintenance, repair and operations maintenance or technical installations. The white-collar worker, by contrast, performs non-manual labor often in an office; and the service industry worker performs labor involving customer interaction, entertainment, retail and outside sales, and the like.

Grey-collar refers to the balance of employed people not classified as white- or blue collar. Although grey-collar is sometimes used to describe those who work beyond the age of retirement,[1] its most widely accepted meaning refers to occupations that incorporate some of the elements of both blue- and white-collar, or are completely different from both categories.

Examples of Grey Collar industries:

Farming, fishing, forestry, and other forms of agribusiness
Health care, aged care, child care, and the personal service sector
Protective services and security
Food preparation and the catering industry
High-tech technicians
Skilled trades, technicians, etc

(I think policemen and army officers should fall under this category)

Unemployed

Housewife (I don't consider that the same as unemployed)

and other (please specify).

Poll is anonymous. :)

I'm a white-collar worker, having worked in banking & finance for half of the past decade. However, because of the turmoil in the financial markets I am currently without a contract (since end of January). I'm hopeful to find a new contract within the next month or so. What counts in my favour is my considerable experience.

I'm in with Brinks Armoured Transport right now but not..

They're running through my background checks, criminal background of which I have none, and employment history i.e references etc, credit check, Posession and Aquisition of Firearms liscencing check .. etc.. Could take forever before I am finally in.. So besides what's left of my Student Loan, I am basically dirt poor.. It really sucks ..

After my studies I am guarenteed a Job with a Provincial level Minimum Security Corrections facility somewhere in Canada, with the potential to advance towards Maximum security.. Which is an enormous increase in salary and stability.. With a couple years or so of experience in the Corrections field, I am guarenteed a spot in either Nuclear Security (a branch of the Emergency Task Force) or as a Uniformed Patrol Officer with the Ontario Provincial Police.. The possibilities are truly ENDLESS after my studies are completed and am really looking forward to the future..But that won't happen until at least December of '09 when all my modules are completed..

:D

Nice to know as well, that Canadian Law Enforcement Officers are treated alot better than the States, and pay them a HELL of alot more..

Guess I fall under the Blue-collar.

I work at the University of Maastricht as an IT OnSite Supporter. Currently we are replacing about 120 computers at a location and reinstalling 60 others. For my job I also need to go to the users and look if I can solve their problem. Replace computers and monitors, backup duty, cleaning up the cables beneath the desks where we place the computers.

How would you classify a stripper in a gay club?

Just kidding. Blue Collar, but trained Grey. I drive a truck, delivering radiology supplies all over North Carolina. I'm a nationally certified massage therapist. I had my South Carolina license, but it lapsed, and I have not yet gotten my North Carolina license. I'm trying to meet back up with some old classmates to get them to sign the character reference so I can get it.

So, ladies, remember, if you need to be rubbed the right way, just let me know! :thumb001: But, if anyone needs me to strip...well, take that up with my girlfriend. She's not the sharing type.

I'm a student, so currently not working, in a white collar field.

Some of the definitions in the OP I don't agree with, I think teachers should be 'white collar' and not 'blue collar', and forestry/fishing and maybe some skilled trades should be included with 'blue collar'.

Still a student, I finish this year but as job prospects are low, I'm hoping to stay on and do postgrad, after that I'm not sure where I'll fit, where does scientific research fit in!

I'd put that squarely in the 'white collar' field.

I have worked at gas stations- ( always pay for your gas)-they make the cashier pay when people steal gas

Pretty sure that is highly illegal...probably too late to do anything about it now though.

I always wondered if it was illegal. It certainly didn't seem right to me. 3 different gas stations I worked at did this; BP, Golden Gallon and a Favorite Market....

Recently my husband was in the BP close to our house and he over heard the clerk there say she would have to pay for the drive off that just occurred, so it is apparently still going on. Gas stations seem to be dirty anyhow...or I mean ran dirty. The golden gallon I worked at they wrote you up whenever your till was short-after 3 write ups your fired. Needless to say within a few months I was fired...it didn't make sense to me because I was always good with the money and good with the paperwork. I didn't know anything fishy was up but months later I ran into a gal I worked with at that golden gallon ( what a stupid freakin name ) :rolleyes2: and she told me the boss lady ( who fired me ) was fired for steeling money. Then it all added up...she was writing me up as being short - when I wasn't and pocketing the money-which I am sure she did to others. I think the reason these gas stations always have big turnovers is 1 crooked managing 2 any decent person can't take their crap for long 3 it is actually hard work at a low pay 4 they actually seem to want to hide secrets as well so they keep people constantly coming in and out so their secrets won't be found out...

White collar.

I work in an office attached to a computer and a telephone.
But it is still better than any of the blue collar jobs I have ever had - though sometimes I wish I could still walk around in a band t-shirt with a pair of shorts and cuss/yell while working. I don't think that would fly in the office.

I love being able to feel the cold, the warmth, the rain and sun all year round than sitting in an office looking at it all.

Yep, most likely violates the minimum wage law as well as some other ones. If it's the owner of the gas station that was making this comment about eating the loss, that might be true, but not an employee. I had to eat some losses when I was a kid with a paper route, but that's because I was an 'independent contractor' not an 'employee' (even that may have been illegal, idk).

The golden gallon I worked at they wrote you up whenever your till was short-after 3 write ups your fired.

That is legal, however

she was writing me up as being short - when I wasn't and pocketing the money-which I am sure she did to others.

You might be able to sue for that, not sure. If this happened within the past couple years or so, it might be worth it to give a call to a lawyer in Alabama who deals with employment law. Usually you have to sue within a couple years or so of the incident happening though.

Past few years I've been working summers and holidays and then been a full time student from September to April. Security Guards are so hardcore in the States.. Today at training we watched a video that was from the U.S, and was suprised to see that alot of their every-day, run-of-the-mill guards were armed!

In canada you can't carry sidearms under any circumstance unless you're in money transfer/armoured car, which is one of the reasons why I signed up with Brinks, just to look as cool as you yanks..! :p

People love to knock security guards (rent-a-cops, they call em, everyone knows) and they curse at them and try and instigate fights with you if you kick them off the property .. It's all part of the job, but people say that guards are in that buisness because they're stupid.. HOGWASH..

You to have good people skills, and you have to be excellent in dealing with very stressful situations, like keeping your composure when you're dealing with a bunch of 15 year old punk skateboarders or an EDP.. It can get really hard..

Quite a thankless job, and let's face it, most companies out there don't pay near as much as the guards there deserve.. It's very risky and can be extremely stressful..

There's been quite a few Armoured Car heists around the GTA lately, some successful, some not, most are inside jobs though.. That's what you get when you don't pay us near as much as we deserve..

Not that I would do something like that.. I'm a pretty nice guy.. I just hope I am not forced to drain some nig nog looking to score big..

Ok, maybe I am..

Laterz..

P.S .. I start on the weekend..(I think).. I am only doing part time just so that leaves me just barely enough for gas money, and put some food in my belly..

I seriously entertained the idea for several years before I became a Heathen and the thought once again occurred to me as I was considering what form of Christianity seemed to suit my new-found path.

I find it interesting that we don't actually have any men of the cloth here.

A part time blue collar job and a couple part time white collar jobs. The blue collar job, shown here:

actually pays more (per hour worked) than many of the white collar jobs I've had.

If I ever get a camera maybe I can take it to work. It's ripping out the innards of a rotten old house, tearing down old brickworks and such. I found cigarette packages from around 1880 in one of the old chimneys I was knocking down

Blue collar. Engineer working on position in the direct exploatation which can be done (and often is) by someone without higher education. However, in future they are going to hire only engineers.
However, if you want a career in transport without being "someone" or "someone's" this position is a must.

White Collar... although most of the times my shirt isn't white. :D

I need to update on this: i don't actually have any white shirts. :D
My shirts are: light blue, gray, some other colors i can't name and i also have some stripped ones. I have a preference for dark ties by the way, various shades of dark blue or dark red.
