Lived here for four years in the 90's.
Chile's "tenth region's" original inhabitants were Huilliche indians, which were displaced by the Spanish, and later German colonists.
Valdivia was devastated in 1960 by the strongest earthquake ever recorded, but has since been been rebuilt. Among the city's landmarks are the university (http://www.uach.cl/) famous for its biology (especially veterinary science) department and the Kunstmann brewery (http://www.interpatagonia.com/paseos/cervezadevaldivia/index_i.html).
