How far do they go back and should I get ancestary or 23andme
Discuss
Some say only 300 years back or so.
I heard about 23andme they are going back til middle-age, another time they go back til 500 years back though.
The ancestry timeline is speculative according to the lenght of your segments etc and only goes back 8 generations or so : https://customercare.23andme.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004342967-Ancestry-Timeline

500 years roughly for both, and 23andme. It's more expensive, but it's more accurate (arguably) and it comes with Y DNA and mtDNA, which Ancestry does not.

I think it goes back even further than it says, or else I feel a lot of North Americans like myself wouldn't get any real results. I just ordered a DNA test a few days ago, I'll be pissed if it doesn't go back, haha.

I think what it means by going back 500 years is going back to the last time the Old and New World were separated.

That's unfortunate, because I have a ton of ancestors from England coming over in the early 1600's that only have ancestry from other places, such as Scandinavia. England was almost a holding place for them/..
