They are "white" American Southerners and accepted that way. My Grandma would often get asked where she was from by people who didn't know her and she would get angry because she considered herself a native white Southerner. People on that side of the family that have taken DNA test have results stating that they over whelming British/Irish, but with minor admixtures from the East Mediterranean, Caucasus, Volga Ural,Finland/Siberia, Central Asia, and/or South Asia.
