Research by babynamewizard.com has revealed Sofia is extremely popular
Tops charts in countries including Russia, Mexico, Chile and Argentina
Name is only the 29th most popular in the UK, according to official figures
The moniker is derived from the Greek word for wisdom

Olivia may be the most popular girls' name in the UK, but another moniker is so beloved that it tops the charts in eight countries even though it's outside the top 10 here.
According to research by babynamewizard.com, Sofia is the top name for parents in eight countries: Mexico, Russia, Chile, Estonia, Slovakia, Argentina, Italy and Switzerland.
The site's experts established Sofia's prevalence by researching national name data from countries around the world, but did not give any reason for the widespread use of the name.
Variants of the name - Sophia and Sophie - are number 11 and 14 in the UK respectively, but Sofia is only the 29th most popular choice, according to Office For National Statistics figures for 2016.

Famous namesakes: Celebrities with the popular moniker include Lionel Richie's model daughter (left) and Modern Family star Sofia Vergara

Sofia may of course become even more popular thanks to celebrities with the name, such as Lionel Richie's daughter Sofia, actress Sofia Vergara and director Sofia Coppola.

While variants of Sophie and Sofia are popular with parents, recent research by Baby Centre showed that traditional names such as Ian, Frank and Cynthia are dying out.

No parents who use the site named their children Ian, Ricky or Roger last year.
Girls' names Enid, Dorothy and Bertha were also out of favour.

While Oliver and Olivia might be favoured by UK parents, here are some of the most beloved names in other countries.

If this name really became the most popular name for newborn girls in Russia, it's a mystery to me because it used to be not even nearly that popular. It's not frequent among adults.

Here I think it is an old-fashioned woman's name. One of my distant ancestors was Sofia.
